Don't you love it when you find a series you like, and it has a full number of chapters already? I experienced this with Younger, a dramedy featuring an old woman reinventing herself as a 26-year-old assistant in New York. It has 7 seasons, and it has been my go-to show while I wait for other stories to continue. Here I share my thoughts about Younger.

The story revolves around Liza Miller, a 40-year-old woman recently separated, with a daughter studying abroad in India. She enters an existential crisis after looking for a job where no one wants to hire a middle-aged woman without experience. She dedicated herself to motherhood, only to end things after her husband cheated. Then she has this crazy idea about going for an entry position as an assistant and pretending to be 26. This sets the whole argument loaded with complications, white lies, heavy lies, and a lot of fun in between.

La historia gira en torno a Liza Miller, una mujer de 40 años recién separada, con una hija que estudia en la India. Entra en una crisis existencial tras buscar un trabajo donde nadie quiere contratar a una mujer de mediana edad sin experiencia. Se dedicó por completo a la maternidad, pero terminó su relación tras la infidelidad de su marido. Entonces se le ocurre la loca idea de presentarse a un puesto de asistente y fingir que tiene 26 años. Esto llena la trama de complicaciones, mentiras piadosas, mentiras pesadas y mucha diversión entre medias.

While it is a past-decade show, it does feel fresh and innovative while also offering the cozy elements of a traditional story. We find a lot of feel-good experiences, some messiness and chaos, and also romantic plotlines. In the spirit of the last element, romance is quite messy. Authors slowly cultivated certain bonds carefully during the first seasons, and they rewarded the audience when those bonds finally materialized. Nonetheless, things become overly complicated, and that can bring quite some dissatisfaction. It is a great thing to watch the whole series continually because it allows you to see some poor decisions regarding that aspect. Still, I became a fan of many romantic storylines presented in Younger.

Si bien es una serie de la última década, se siente fresca e innovadora, a la vez que ofrece los elementos acogedores de una historia tradicional. Encontramos muchas experiencias agradables, algo de caos y desorden, y también tramas románticas. Siguiendo el espíritu de este último elemento, el romance es bastante caótico. Los autores cultivaron lentamente ciertos vínculos con cuidado durante las primeras temporadas y recompensaron a la audiencia cuando finalmente se materializaron. Sin embargo, las cosas se complican demasiado, lo que puede generar bastante insatisfacción. Es genial ver la serie completa continuamente, ya que te permite ver algunas decisiones erróneas en ese aspecto. Aun así, me convertí en fan de muchas de las historias románticas presentadas en Younger.

Another thing I believe the show does well is creating the sense of friendship through a group of initially disconnected people who form bonds over the seasons. They are all colorful in their own way. At the end of the show, we can clearly see a "Friends" effect (the creation of a group as solid as the one in the show Friends from the 90s). The higher sense of coziness comes from this group throughout the whole story.

Otro aspecto que creo que la serie logra con éxito es crear un sentimiento de amistad a través de un grupo de personas inicialmente desconectadas que forjan vínculos a lo largo de las temporadas. Cada una es peculiar, a su manera. Al final de la serie, podemos apreciar claramente el efecto "Friends" (la creación de un grupo tan sólido como el de la serie Friends de los 90). La mayor sensación de intimidad proviene de este grupo a lo largo de toda la historia.

The third important aspect of Younger is the reflection it brings to the table. Ageism truly affects middle-aged workers, and competition doesn't make it easier. Fulfilling the standards of the working market can be no less than daunting, but the show presents the disruptive idea that one of the main aspects for hiring, age, is not relevant when you have talent and passion for what you do. While I wouldn't agree on holding onto a lie of that magnitude, I think it is never too late to start over and reinvent yourself.

El tercer aspecto importante de Younger es la reflexión que plantea. El edadismo afecta seriamente a los trabajadores de mediana edad y la competencia no lo facilita. Overall, Younger is a series worth watching and enjoyable. It has abundant events and colorful characters to bring entertainment to its audience. It helps to believe in second chances and to stand up again after failure. All of this while enjoying the beautiful city of New York.
