Elysium (2013) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Before I give you my opinion, something curious when watching this movie recently is the feeling of how similar it is to other movies like Chappie (next review) and District 9, movies that I have seen much more times in a row than this one. My surprise was not great when I noticed that it is the same person who directed these three films. And it's fascinating how original they became at the time, even more so when dealing with political, social and humanitarian themes. Of course, the use of cyberpunk elements such as artificially intelligent robots, state-of-the-art weapons, spaceships/space shuttles and physically altered men is what makes this filmography one of my favorites within the science fiction genre. The funny thing is that, among those already mentioned, the one that got less popularity at the time was Elysium due to the criticism it received for its script and characters, among other things. To be honest, I say that as an independent action and fiction film, it manages to entertain quite a bit due to its excellent direction and production work, especially with the visual effects and good CGI. This for the time in which it was released is saying too much due to the high competition in the film world.

Antes de darles mi opinión, algo curioso al ver esta película recientemente es la sensación de lo similar que es a otras películas como Chappie (próxima reseña) y District 9, películas que he visto mucho más veces seguidas que esta. Mi sorpresa no fue grande cuando noté que es la misma persona quien dirigió estas tres cintas. Y es fascinante lo originales que llegaron a ser en su momento, más aún al tratar temas políticos, sociales y humanitarios. Claro está, que utilicen elementos cyberpunk como robots con inteligencia artificial, armas de última tecnología, naves/transbordadores espaciales y hombres físicamente alterados es lo que hace de esta filmografía de mis favoritas dentro del género de la ciencia ficción. Lo curioso es que, de entre las ya mencionadas, la que menos popularidad consiguió en su momento fue Elysium debido a la crítica que recibió por su guión y personajes, entre otras cosas. Para ser sincero, yo digo que como película de acción y ficción independiente, logra entretener bastante debido a su excelente trabajo de dirección y producción, sobre todo con los efectos visuales y buen CGI. Esto para la época en la que fue estrenada es decir demasiado debido a la alta competencia que había dentro del mundo del cine.

Starting with the story they are trying to tell us, you have already noticed how much I like dystopian or post-apocalyptic futuristic worlds. In this case, it can be said that it is one of the most potential futures to be reality due to the sociopolitical, climatological and technological issues it shows. But what strikes me most is the obvious way of dividing the different social classes that we see throughout the almost two hours that this film has. Evidently, we notice this with the life of Max, who is a normal person born and raised in our chaotic, toxic and overpopulated blue planet. In a dangerous neighborhood with extreme poverty, he grows up with bad habits like stealing and fighting since he was a child. But since then he had a friend, a girl with whom he made a promise to go together someday to Elysium, the space station where only the rich and powerful live and which is considered the "Eden" of this world. As an adult, we see Max trying to reform while on probation. We also see what this world is like in terms of poor security, lack of health, abuse of power, overexploitation of labor and absence of human rights as we find ourselves in the shoes of our bald protagonist.

Already from the beginning we see that this world is completely devastated, not only naturally or visually, but also socially and morally. The clear difference in treatment of humanity itself, dividing them between the upper class or "privileged" and the lower class or poor. While the rich and powerful live away from the polluting planet in a space station with all the luxuries and the best technology there is, a large part of the human population lives in circumstances that are too precarious, dangerous and without health and safety (it is like a clear example of the difference between the first world and the third world in real life). However, the worst of all is not this, but the inhumane way of treating those who are not chosen to live in Elysium. It is here where characters like Delacourt appears on the scene demonstrating a role that we can easily confuse with certain powerful characters known in real life due to their atrocious and cruel way of eliminating people who try to arrive illegally to the prestigious space station (something about it all sounds to me like a certain popular country and its problems with immigration).

Empezando por la historia que nos intentan contar, ya notaron lo mucho que me gustan los mundos futuristas distópicos o post-apocalípticos. En este caso, se puede decir que es uno de los futuros más potenciales a ser realidad debido a los temas sociopolíticos, climatológicos y tecnológicos que muestra. Pero lo que más me llama la atención es la manera tan evidente de dividir las diferentes clases sociales que vemos a lo largo de las casi dos horas que tiene esta película. Evidentemente, esto lo notamos con la vida de Max, quien es una persona normal que nació y creció en nuestro caótico, tóxico y sobrepoblado planeta azul. En un barrio peligroso y con pobreza extrema, este crece con los malos hábitos como robar y pelear desde pequeño. Pero desde entonces tuvo una amiga, una chica con la que hizo una promesa de ir juntos algún día a Elysium, la estación espacial donde solo los ricos y poderosos viven y que es considerado como el “Edén” de este mundo. Ya de grande, vemos a Max intentando reformarse mientras se encuentra en libertad condicional. También vemos cómo es este mundo en cuanto a la poca seguridad, falta de salud, abuso de poder, sobreexplotación laboral y ausencia de los derechos humanos se refiere mientras nos encontramos en los zapatos de nuestro calvo protagonista.

Ya desde el principio vemos que este mundo está completamente devastado, no sólo natural o visualmente, sino también de manera social y moralmente. La clara diferencia de trato que hay hacia la humanidad misma, dividiéndolos entre los de la alta clase o “privilegiados” y los de la clase baja o los pobres. Mientras los rico y poderosos viven alejados del contaminante planeta en una estación espacial con todos los lujos y la mejor tecnología que hay, gran parte de la población humana vive en circunstancias demasiado precarias, peligrosas y sin salud ni seguridad (es como un claro ejemplo de la diferencia entre el primer mundo y el tercer mundo en la vida real). Sin embargo, lo peor de todo no es esto, sino la forma tan inhumana de tratar a los que no son elegidos para vivir en Elysium. Es aquí donde personajes como Delacourt aparece en escena demostrando un papel que fácilmente podemos confundir con ciertos personajes poderosos conocidos en la vida real debido a su forma tan atroz y cruel de eliminar a la gente que intenta llegar ilegalmente a la prestigiosa estación espacial (algo de todo esto me suena a cierto país popular y sus problemas con la inmigración).

Something that this film does manage to do well is to develop characters that we can easily come to hate or detest for the way they are, think or speak (also taking into account the typical offensive language that this type of Blomkamp's films have). Among the one I already mentioned above, there is also Kruger, who presents him as the worst of the worst that humanity can be. His cruel, violent and ruthless way of being is detestable, not to mention his temperamental and unstable behavior. He's like the perfect action movie villain, perhaps. While, on the other hand, we have Max as the protagonist, who is a victim of everything that is lived in this dangerous, polluted and overpopulated planet. Despite that, he sacrifices everything in order to fulfill his promise as a child and go to Elysium as possible while becoming a kind of hero and fugitive. Particularly, I'm not a big fan of Matt Damon's acting work, but with the few movies I saw where he participated I can admit that he is an excellent actor. In this case he manages to prove to be that ruined, lonely protagonist with a desire to survive and protect others despite his past. Otherwise, I don't have much to say about a cast in which most of the characters are just easily forgettable people.

As for the film itself, it is important to note not only how raw and dark the atmosphere is, but also the people and the story itself. From its offensive language to the horns and exploding heads, this film has some gory and uncensored scenes. Not to mention the social, political and humanitarian issues it deals with such as immigration, overpopulation, violation of human rights, among others. It is evident that we are talking about a raw work and not made for all audiences, but rather for a certain audience in particular. I keep thinking that in terms of certain details of the script at the end of the third act (and also in part of the second act) it would have been better to omit or change some details that could have been unnecessary, but it is not that they completely ruin the film. Otherwise, it is a film that can be seen and enjoyed either for its good story or for its good effects and its good number of action scenes. Of course, that's only if you ignore or don't care about the excessive use of profanity, uncensored scenes and obnoxious characters.

Algo que sí logra hacer bien esta película es desarrollar personajes que fácilmente podemos llegar a odiar o detestar por su forma de ser, de pensar o de hablar (teniendo en cuenta también el típico lenguaje ofensivo que tiene este tipo de películas de Blomkamp). En cuanto a la película en sí, es importante destacar no solo lo cruda y oscura que es tanto el ambiente como la gente y la historia en sí. Desde su lenguaje ofensivo hasta los cuernos y cabezas explotando, esta cinta posee ciertas escenas sangrientas y libres de censura. Eso sin mencionar los temas sociales, políticos y humanitarios que trata con su trama como la inmigración, la sobrepoblación, la violación de los derechos humanos, ente otros. Es evidente que estamos hablando de una obra cruda y no hecha para todo el público, sino más bien para cierto público en particular. No dejo de pensar que en cuanto a ciertos detalles del guión al final del tercer acto (y también en parte del segundo acto) hubiera sido mejor obviar o cambiar algunos detalles que pudieron ser innecesarios, pero tampoco es que arruinen por completo la película. De resto, es una cinta que se puede ver y disfrutar ya sea por su buena historia o por sus buenos efectos y su buen número de escenas de acción. Claro, esto solo si ignoras o te da igual el uso excesivo de groserías, escenas sin censura y personajes detestables.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical aspect of this film. With a budget of over 100 million dollars, it is evident the level of quality in terms of visuals. Just looking at the design and landscape of the Elysium space station near Earth is more than enough to notice it. However, I also really like the way they combined the polluting and catastrophic environment of the planet with the robots and space shuttles. Such a mix of futuristic technologies with dystopian environments or worlds is like a hallmark for the director of this movie. The design of the robots does make me think a bit of Chappie, truth be told. Also the weapons we see are cool, even more so when using them as the visual effects of the explosions are some of the best. And speaking of explosions and effects, I really like how the slow motion effects are used in certain moments of action and tension (although at certain times it goes a bit overboard with this). Otherwise, there's one or two other visual effects that are also quite appealing. The palette of colors and dark tones is also nice and combines very well with the atmosphere and what it seeks to convey. The same happens with the soundtrack that, with the melodies or background or ambient music that we hear between each battle or chase, manages to convey the emotions that these scenes have. On a visual level you can have a good movie, even with its interesting and controversial plot, but still it is not a perfect work or made for everyone.

Personally, I give it a score of 8/10 as far as the sci-fi/action genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico de esta película. Con un presupuesto mayor a los 100 millones de dólares, es evidente el nivel de calidad en cuanto a lo visual se refiere. Ya con ver el diseño y el paisaje de la estación espacial Elysium cerca de la Tierra es más que suficiente para notarlo. Sin embargo, también me gusta mucho la forma en la que combinaron el ambiente contaminante y catastrófico del planeta con los robots y transbordadores espaciales. Dicha mezcla de tecnologías futuristas con ambientes o mundos distópicos es como un sello distintivo para el director de esta película. El diseño de los robots sí me hace pensar un poco en Chappie, la verdad. También las armas que vemos son geniales, más aún al utilizarlas ya que los efectos visuales de las explosiones son de lo mejor. Y hablando de explosiones y efectos, me gusta mucho cómo se utilizan los efectos de cámara lenta en ciertos momentos de acción y tensión (aunque en ciertos momentos se excede un poco con esto). De resto, hay uno que otro efecto visual que también atrae bastante. La paleta de colores y tonos oscuros es también agradable y combina muy bien con el ambiente y lo que se busca transmitir. Lo mismo sucede con la banda sonora que, con las melodías o músicas de fondo o ambiente que escuchamos entre cada batalla o persecución se logra transmitir las emociones que poseen dichas escenas. A nivel visual se puede tener una buena película, incluso con su interesante y polémica trama, pero aún así no es una obra perfecta o hecha para todo el mundo.
