Jingle All the Way (1996) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

I think it's pretty obvious why this Christmas movie is one of the most popular and recommended, especially during the holiday season. While it's common to see Hollywood cast well-known actors in certain genres to play embarrassing roles in comedy films, I think Jingle All the Way is one of the most special and recognized cases simply because it was Arnold Schwarzenegger who took the plunge first. Although, well, I don't know for sure if it's the first time or not, but it is the first case I remember seeing a great actor like the Terminator in a Christmas movie playing a father struggling to get a toy.

Apparently, it made such a negative impression at the time that it was one of the most criticized films. Even so, this did not stop the film from becoming a success and later becoming a benchmark in the film industry for Christmas and family comedies. In addition to this, it became a great classic over the years, becoming even better than many of today's comedy films, to be honest. I don't mean to be negative or anything like that, but let's admit that tastes in comedy have declined a lot in recent years. Although, of course, I'm not the one to say this, as my taste in humor is more broken than normal.

Creo que es más que evidente la razón por la cual esta película navideña es de las más populares y recomendadas, sobre todo en estas fechas decembrinas. Si bien es común ver cómo en Hollywood deciden poner a actores reconocidos en cierto género a interpretar papeles vergonzosos en películas de comedia; creo que el caso de Jingle All the Way es de los más especiales y reconocidos por el simple hecho de ser Arnold Schwarzenegger quien cayó primero. Aunque bueno, no sé a ciencia cierta si es la primera vez o no, pero sí es el primer caso que yo recuerdo haber visto a un gran actor como lo es el de Terminator en una película navideña interpretando a un padre en apuros por conseguir un juguete.

Al parecer fue tanta la impresión negativa que tuvo en su momento que fue de las más criticadas. Aún así, esto no detuvo a esta cinta de convertirse e n un éxito y posteriormente volverse un referente en la industria del cine en lo que respecta a películas de comedia navideñas y familiares. Además de esto, se convirtió en un gran clásico con el paso de los años, volviéndose incluso mejor que muchas películas de comedia de la actualidad, la verdad. No es por ser negativo ni nada por el estilo, pero admitamos que los gustos por la comedia han decaído mucho en estos últimos años. Aunque, claro, no soy quien para decir esto ya que mis gustos por el humor están más rotos de lo normal.

Even so, for a Christmas movie, it's one of my few favorites simply because it has such an interesting cast. I mean, who wouldn't be intrigued by seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger running around looking for a toy on Christmas eve? Surely, those who haven't seen it because they have no cultural taste think that this premise sounds like one of the most hackneyed and repetitive ones you can find today. But I assure you that the way this movie presents it, there's no doubt that when you watch it, you'll find yourself on an incomparable adventure full of unforgettable moments.

Mind you, I don't deny that its premise is the simplest in the world, but it's also true that the mix of humor, jokes, references, and moments of action make this film a unique gem in its style. I may be exaggerating a little because of the nostalgia that Jingle All the Way brings me when I watched it as a child at home on cable TV during the holiday season. But even now, recognizing the amount of detail, Arnold's terrible acting at the time, and the obvious hidden message criticizing American society for consumerism and the family problems of that era, I still think the same: it's one of my most entertaining Christmas movies.

Aún así, para ser una película navideña, es una de mis pocas elecciones preferidas solo por el hecho de tener un elenco bastante interesante. O sea, ¿a quién no le llama la atención ver a Arnold Schwarzenegger correr de aquí para allá buscando un juguete en plena víspera de navidad? Seguramente para los que no la han visto debido a que no tienen ningún gusto cultural piensen que dicha premisa suena de las más quemadas y repetidas que se pueden encontrar en la actualidad. Pero les aseguro que por la forma en la que nos lo muestra esta película es indudable que, al momento de verla, nos encontraremos con una aventura incomparable y repleta de momentos inolvidables.

Ojo, no niego que su premisa sea de lo más simple del mundo, pero también es cierto que la mezcla de elementos de humor, chistes, referencias y momentos de acción hacen de esta película una joya única en su estilo. Puede que exagere un poco nomás por la nostalgia que me trae Jingle All the Way cuando la veía de pequeño en casa por televisión por cable en fechas decembrinas. Pero aún reconociendo ahora la cantidad de detalles, la pésima actuación de Arnold en aquel entonces y el evidente mensaje oculto que crítica a la sociedad estadounidense por el consumismo y los problemas intrafamiliares de aquella época; seguiré opinando lo mismo: es de mis películas navideñas más entretenidas.

Yes, I just mentioned what I didn't like or what simply caught my attention about Jingle All the Way. One of those details is its story, which revolves around an ordinary american family with common problems, such as forgetting to buy your child their favorite toy. The detail is not in the premise itself, but in what it shows us at first glance about what american families were like (or still are, I don't know) at that time. I understand that the film may have been indirectly inspired by some cases of crisis or problems that occurred some time ago with the economy and the market, with Christmas being the center of everything.

This is something that, even today, is common to see even in countries with less stable economies such as those in LATAM. During the Christmas season, it is common to see how the market increases in value due to the law of supply and demand. Consumerism increases, as do the debts to be paid off next year. But it is now a tradition in every society to buy the newest, most eye-catching, or best decorated items for Christmas. Whether out of habit, to attract attention, or simply to demonstrate a certain status in society, families go into debt every year to fulfill the whims of their children and relatives.

Si, acabo de dejar entre visto lo que no me gustó o simplemente me llamó la atención de Jingle All the Way. Uno de esos detalles es su historia, la cual gira en torno a una familia estadounidense cualquiera con problemas comunes como lo es, por ejemplo, el de olvidarse comprarle el juguete favorito a tu hijo. El detalle no está en la premisa como tal, sino en lo que nos demuestra a simple vista cómo eran (o siguen siendo, no sé) las familias estadounidenses en aquella época. Entiendo que la película pudo haberse inspirado de manera indirecta en algunos casos de crisis o problemas que hubo hace tiempo con la economía y el mercado, siendo la navidad el centro de todo.

Esto es algo que, aún al día de hoy, es común verlo incluso en países con economías menos estables como las de Latinoamérica. En estas fechas navideñas es común ver cómo el mercado aumenta su valor debido a la ley de oferta y demanda. El consumismo aumenta, al igual que las deudas a pagar para el año que viene. Pero es ya una tradición en cada sociedad comprar lo más nuevo, lo más llamativo o lo mejor decorado para navidad. Ya sea por costumbre, por llamar la atención o simplemente por demostrar cierto estatus en la sociedad; las familias se endeudan cada año para cumplir con los caprichos de sus hijos y familiares.

Beyond thinking about whether this is right or wrong, what strikes me most is how the film leaves us with a clear underlying message about the meaning of giving gifts and keeping your word. This comparison, which we see throughout the hour-and-a-half-long feature film, intensifies until its striking and unforgettable ending. It makes us think about the need to give gifts and the importance of making and keeping promises at important moments in our lives. Personally, as I am someone who is apathetic to displays of affection and social and family interactions, I have no opinion on the matter. Perhaps this dislike I have is due to how much I have changed since I was a child.

But anyway, leaving aside my unfortunate case, let's continue with more about Jingle All the Way. I have nothing against any of the cast members in this film. I suppose most of my personal dislikes and problems are due to the script rather than the acting of any of the actors involved. The detail of all this is when certain moments in the film arrive in which certain characters act in a certain way that causes me that unparalleled dissatisfaction or displeasure. But I suppose this also happens intentionally as the film depends on these uncomfortable scenes and detestable characters.

Más allá de pensar si es correcto esto o no, lo que más me llama la atención es cómo la película nos deja un claro mensaje de fondo sobre el significado de dar regalos y a la vez de cumplir con tus palabras. Esta comparación que vemos a lo largo de la hora y media de largometraje se intensifica hasta su llamativo e inolvidable final. Nos pone a pensar sobre la necesidad de dar regalos y la importancia que hay en prometer y cumplir en momentos importantes en nuestra vida. En lo personal, como soy alguien apático a las muestras de afecto y tratos sociales y familiares no tengo nada que opinar al respecto. Tal vez este disgusto que tengo sea por todo lo que he cambiado desde que era pequeño.

Pero bueno, dejando de lado mi lamentable caso, sigamos con más de Jingle All the Way. Con el caso del elenco que tiene dicha película no tengo nada en contra de ninguno. Supongo que la mayoría de disgustos y problemas personales que tengo son debido al guión más bien que a la actuación de alguno de los actores involucrados. El detalle de todo esto está cuando llegan ciertos momentos en la película en la que ciertos personajes actúan de cierta manera que me causan esa disconformidad o desagrado sin igual. Pero supongo que esto también sucede de manera intencional al depender la película de dichas escenas incómodas y personajes detestables.

Speaking a little more about the humor in the film, I would also like to mention the type of comedy it has, which is not too heavy in most scenes. Of course, there are exceptions where it is clear that black humor is being used, but little else, to be honest. Honestly, it's those scenes that are so striking and with such thoughtful humor that I personally remember the most. Whether it's because they are messages or indirect references to issues such as illegal toy trafficking, the use of bombs in mailings as a method of terrorism, or the constant abuse of power by law enforcement authorities.

On the other hand, the film does have its share of action. Of course, we're talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger as the star of a Christmas comedy, so he'll always stand out in a good way if they add action to some of his scenes. But of all the scenes in this film, the one I've really liked since I was a kid is the grand finale. Despite the CGI and the poor quality that is noticeable over the years, it is still one of the best endings I have seen in a Christmas movie. Although I haven't seen many movies of this style to say this, but I don't care.

Hablando un poco más del humor que maneja la película, también quisiera mencionar el tipo de comedia que tiene, el cual no llega a ser tan pesado en la mayoría de escenas. Claro, hay excepciones donde se deja bien entre visto que es humor negro lo que se maneja, pero poco más, la verdad. Sinceramente, son esas escenas tan llamativas y con ese humor tan pensado las que más recuerdo personalmente. Ya sea porque son mensajes o referencias indirectas a temas como lo es el tráfico ilegal de juguetes, el uso de bombas en envíos por correspondencia como método de terrorismo o el constante abuso del poder que hay por parte de las autoridades policiales.

Por otro lado, la película tiene su pequeño repertorio de acción incluido. Claro, estamos hablando de Arnold Schwarzenegger como protagonista en una película de comedia navideña, así que siempre logrará destacarse de buena manera si le agregan acción en algunas de sus escenas. Pero de entre todas las que posee esta película, la que sí me gustó mucho desde que era pequeño fue su gran final. A pesar del CGI y la calidad pésima y notable con los años que tiene, sigue siendo uno de los mejores finales que he visto en una película navideña. Aunque no he visto muchas películas de este estilo como para decir esto, pero me da igual.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of Jingle All the Way. While I recognize that this film was well produced for its time, I won't deny that it has aged very well since then. That unique style of using camera zooms with an alarming soundtrack in each scene is typical of Brian Levant. The cinematography, on the other hand, is not bad either, as is the vivid color palette and the use of light and shadow. We must also acknowledge the good work in using practical effects in most of the film's scenes. Especially with the angry reindeer and Arnold dressed as Turbo Man.

Another thing that caught my attention is the "natural" way in which a simple scene of searching for a toy around the city turns into a case of illegal trafficking and ultimately a terrorist act that ends with a real-life representation of the iconic scene we see at the beginning of the film. While many criticized the film's instability from one scene to the next at the time, I admit that these details are what make it special in one way or another. There are also the sound effects, which aren't bad. But what undoubtedly stands out the most is the soundtrack to Jingle All the Way. Anyway, here's another Christmas movie to watch during the holidays.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the comedy and action genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Jingle All the Way. Si bien reconozco que esta película tiene una buena producción para su época, no voy a negar tampoco que ha envejecido muy bien desde entonces. Ese estilo único de utilizar los zoom de la cámara con la banda sonora alarmante en cada escena es típico de Brian Levant. La fotografía, por otra parte, tampoco está mal, al igual que la paleta de colores vivos y el uso de luces y sombras. También hay que reconocer el buen trabajo al utilizar efectos prácticos en la mayoría de escenas de la película. Sobre todo con el reno furioso y Arnold vestido de Turbo Man.

Otra cosa que también me llamó la atención es la manera tan “natural” de hacer que una simple escena de búsqueda de un juguete por la ciudad se convierta en un caso de tráfico ilegal para al final ser un acto terrorista que termina con una representación en la vida real de la icónica escena que vemos al principio de la película. Si bien muchos criticaron la inestabilidad que tuvo la película en una escena tras otra en su momento, admito que estos detalles son lo que la hace especial de algún modo u otro. También están los efectos de sonido, los cuales no están mal. Pero lo que más llama la atención indudablemente es la banda sonora que tiene Jingle All the Way. En fin, aquí les dejo otra película navideña para ver en estas fechas.

Personalmente le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y acción.
