The Shining (1980) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

Before giving you my opinion about this film, I want to clarify that I don't remember ever seeing it before in my life. I know it because of how popular it is in the film industry and in today's popular culture. The number of references, satires, and reinterpretations this work has had since its theatrical release is fascinating. And this is interesting even knowing how controversial it is, not only for being "the worst adaptation of a Stephen King novel", but also for the many interpretations and problems there were with the director and some members of the cast. Be that as it may, as I am completely ignorant of all this because I am not a reader, much less someone who meddles in matters outside my interests, I will focus solely on what I saw in this film.

I should warn you right away that this film is not for all audiences, not even for all horror lovers. I say this not only because it has graphic scenes, nudity, and a lot of blood, but also because it is dense in many ways. To begin with, we have more than two hours of feature film where we see a small family (father, mother, and son) living in a large hotel in the middle of the mountains, far from everything and without any communication. We also see a somewhat interesting mix of what would be a psychological thriller with supernatural elements thrown in. And if that weren't enough, there's the director's touch with his details, visual elements, and settings that are even... gloomy... or at least a couple of them are.

Antes de darles mi opinión acerca de esta película, quiero aclarar que no recuerdo nada de haberla visto antes en mi vida. Si bien la conozco es gracias a lo popular que es en la industria del cine y en la cultura popular actual. La cantidad de referencias, sátiras y reinterpretaciones que ha tenido esta obra desde su estreno en cines hasta ahora es fascinante. Y es interesante esto aún sabiendo lo polémica que es, no solo por ser “la peor adaptación de una novela de Stephen King”, sino por la gran cantidad de interpretaciones y problemas que hubo con el director y algunos miembros del elenco. Sea como sea, como completo ignorante que soy de todo esto por no ser ningún lector ni menos un entrometido en casos ajenos a lo que me interesa, me centraré únicamente en lo que ví de esta cinta.

Desde ya mismo advierto que esta película no es para todo tipo de públicos, ni siquiera es para todo amante del terror, incluso. No solo lo digo porque tenga escenas gráficas, de desnudos y con mucha sangre; sino por lo densa que es en muchos aspectos. Para empezar, tenemos más de dos horas de largometraje donde vemos a una pequeña familia (padre, madre e hijo) viviendo en un gran hotel en medio de las montañas, alejados de todo y sin comunicación alguna. También vemos una mezcla un tanto interesante de lo que sería un thriller psicológico con elementos sobrenaturales de por medio. Y por si no fuera suficiente, está el toque del director con sus detalles, elementos visuales y escenarios que incluso son … tétricos… o al menos un par de ellos.

Talking about its story is like entering the great maze of the Overlook Hotel, as there are things about this film that literally have no explanation whatsoever. From what I understood, everything centers on the life of the Torrance family. The husband, Jack, is a writer (or aspiring writer) with a dark past involving alcohol, his wife Wendy is a woman who depends heavily on him and supports him in everything. Finally, we have Danny, a child with certain psychological problems that actually turn out to be powers that allow him to see things that no one else can see. At first glance, they seem like an ordinary family, but throughout the film we see how this family gradually breaks down, revealing secrets and problems that have existed long before they arrived here.

From the moment we meet the Torrance family, we know that what is to come in this film will be the most mind-blowing thing imaginable. But I don't mean that in a terrifying sense, but rather in the psychological sense, which is what makes this film so powerful. The first thirty minutes of the film are a perfect introduction to a family with all kinds of problems living in a desolate hotel with secrets and rather sinister things going on behind the scenes and in isolated rooms. Not only that, but Danny even gives us a taste of what's to come, with flashes and very short scenes that are quite graphic and terrifying for a simple child. From that moment on, we know that something is wrong in this place.

Hablar de su historia es como adentrarse en el gran laberinto del Hotel Overlook, ya que hay cosas que tiene esta película que, literalmente, no tienen explicación alguna. Hasta lo que llegué a entender, todo se centra en la vida de la familia Torrance. El esposo, Jack, es un escritor (o intento de escritor) con un pasado oscuro con el alcohol, su esposa Wendy es una mujer que depende mucho de él y que lo apoya en todo. Finalmente, tenemos a Danny, un niño con ciertos problemas psicológicos que en realidad termina siendo poderes que lo hacen ver cosas que nadie más ve. A simple vista, pareciera ser una familia ordinaria, pero a lo largo de la película vemos cómo dicha familia se quiebra poco a poco, revelando secretos y problemas que ya han existido desde mucho antes de que llegaran aquí.

Desde que empezamos a conocer a la familia Torrance ya sabemos que lo que se viene en esta película será de lo más alucinante que se podrá conseguir. Pero no lo digo en sentido terrorífico, sino en lo psicológico que es lo que más pega esta película. Los primeros treinta minutos de la película es una introducción perfecta de una familia con problemas de todo tipo viviendo en un hotel desolado con secretos y cosas bastante tétricas entre bastidores y habitaciones aisladas. Y no solo eso, sino que Danny nos muestra incluso un abreboca de lo que se viene después, con destellos y escenas muy cortas, pero bastante gráficas y terroríficas para un simple niño. Desde ese momento ya sabemos que algo anda mal en este lugar.

There are certain details I want to mention about the film, but before that, I want to highlight how well written the story is, really. Both the family and the theme of the hotel and everything that happens in it sounds like a real horror story that could possibly happen to any family with problems in an isolated place with a rather gloomy aura, such as the Overlook Hotel. Imagine that, from the beginning, this place was already the scene of a murder, and the fact that it was built on top of a cemetery gives it a very bad vibe. It's no surprise that this work was inspired by the harsh reality of families ending up in murders and massacres due to hysteria, extreme isolation, and stress. Honestly, even if I had all the money in the world, I wouldn't agree to work as a security guard in that place.

But anyway, we still need to talk about the main characters in this story. I think what I mentioned before is enough about Jack. His temper problems linked to his former alcoholism and lack of stable employment make him the perfect character to be the killer or antagonist in this film. I don't have much to say about Wendy either, beyond how hysterical, scandalous, and tearful she is throughout most of the film. Danny, on the other hand, is a very curious case, as his powers to see or hear things that no one else senses open our eyes to a variety of interpretations of what is happening in this hotel. This is especially true when things about this place are revealed that end up mixing with Jack's behavior until the end.

Hay ciertos detalles que quiero mencionar de la película, pero antes de eso quiero destacar lo bien escrita que está la historia, de verdad. Tanto la familia como el tema del hotel y todo lo que ocurre en él suena a una auténtica historia de terror que, posiblemente, puede llegar a ocurrirle a cualquier familia con problemas en un sitio aislado y con un aura bastante tétrico como lo es el Hotel Overlook. Imagínate que, desde el principio, ese lugar ya fue víctima de un caso de homicidio, además de que el origen que tiene al estar construido sobre un cementerio da muy mala espina. No es novedad que esta obra haya sido inspirada por la cruda realidad de familias terminan en asesinatos y masacres por histeria, aislamientos extremos y estrés. De verdad, ni con los millones del mundo aceptaría trabajar como vigilante en ese lugar.

Pero bueno, falta aún por hablar de los personajes principales de esta historia. De Jack creo que basta con lo que mencioné antes, sus problemas de temperamento ligados a su antiguo problema con el alcohol y la ausencia de un empleo estable lo convierte en el personaje perfecto para ser el asesino o antagonista de esta película. Con Wendy tampoco tengo mucho que opinar, más allá de lo histérica, escandalosa y llorona que es en casi toda la película. Danny, por otro lado, es un caso muy curioso ya que sus poderes para ver o escuchar cosas que nadie más siente nos abre los ojos a una variedad de interpretaciones sobre lo que sucede en este hotel. Y más cuando se revelan cosas de este lugar que se terminan de mezclar con el comportamiento de Jack hasta el final.

I think the original question to ask after watching this movie is: of everything Danny and his parents see at the Overlook Hotel, what was real and what wasn't? It could be said that in many cases there were ghosts present, but one could also mention the psychological aspect of Jack's twisted mind and that of his family. Although the novel claims to be supernatural, this version of the story we see in this adaptation feels more psychological because of its visual elements and the performances of each of the characters (especially Jack Nicholson's, which is one of the best performances I've ever seen of an ex-alcoholic on the verge of madness). This is something that fascinates me greatly because, obviously, it's quite different from typical supernatural horror films with scenes of floating objects and such.

The Shining, on the other hand, focuses more on showing us each scene as if it were part of the reflection of the deranged mind of one of the members of this hotel. And while I am a fan of adaptations being faithful to the original work, I also have to accept that free versions such as this film achieve an equally positive result because of how original and interesting they are. Although I have my complaints about some of the performances by the cast, I think everything else more than makes up for it. There are also things that end up not making sense to me, such as the final scene of the film, which blew my mind, to be honest. I don't know if it's a matter of maintaining the mystery or because the director himself wanted to leave it open to interpretation.

Creo que la pregunta original que hay que hacerse luego de ver esta película es: De todo lo que Danny y sus padres ven en el Hotel Overlook, ¿qué fue real y qué no? Se puede decir que en muchos casos hubo la presencia de fantasmas, pero también se puede mencionar el tema de la psicología por la mente retorcida que tenía Jack y su familia. Si bien la novela alega ser sobrenatural, esta versión de la historia que vemos en esta adaptación se siente más psicológica por los elementos visuales que tiene y las actuaciones de cada uno de los personajes (sobre todo la de Jack Nicholson que es de las mejores interpretaciones que he visto de un ex-alcohólico al borde de la locura). Esto es algo que me fascina mucho ya que, obviamente, se aleja bastante de las típicas cintas de terror sobrenatural con escenas con cosas flotando y así.

The Shining, por otro lado, se centra más en mostrarnos cada escena como si fuera parte del reflejo de la mente desquiciada de uno de los miembros de este hotel. Y si bien soy fan de que una adaptación debe ser fiel a la obra original, también tengo que aceptar que versiones libres como lo es esta película consiguen un resultado igual de positivo por lo originales e interesantes que son. Si bien tengo mis quejas sobre alguna que otra actuación por parte del elenco, considero que todo lo demás lo compensa con creces. También hay cosas que terminan sin tener sentido para mí, como es el caso de la escena final de la película que me voló la cabeza, sinceramente. No sé si es por cuestión de mantener el misterio o porque el mismo director quiso dejarlo a interpretación.

Without a doubt, Stanley Kubrick did an exceptional job with the audiovisual aspect, giving us scenes that make us think. From Jack's "hallucinations" to little Danny's visions, all of these seemingly supernatural scenes have a much darker and gloomier undertone that becomes almost palpable. Hotel floors bathed in blood, twins who appear, talk to you, and disappear, whatever is hiding in room 237... all this and more are elements that make this film a true and terrifying work of cinema. Even though it is considered a poor adaptation, the director has managed to create a horror film that is authentic and unique in its style.

The scenes without background sound, the use of tracking cameras in the background, the fixed panels, the varying atmosphere of the hotel, and the unforgettable shots are the most notable aspects of this film. The sound effects are excellent, especially when they replace the soundtrack in setting the mood for certain scenes. For its part, the soundtrack also manages to convey and elevate the tension and horror generated by this film to a new level. In short, this film is for those who are really looking for something different that leaves you with more questions than answers and a strange feeling in your stomach at the end.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the psychological and supernatural horror genre.

Sin duda alguna, Stanley Kubrick hizo un trabajo más que excepcional con el apartado audiovisual para darnos escenas que nos ponen a pensar. Desde las “alucinaciones” de Jack hasta las visiones del pequeño Danny; todas estas escenas -aparentemente sobrenaturales- tienen un trasfondo mucho más oscuro y tétrico que llega a ser hasta palpable. Pisos del hotel bañados con sangre, gemelas que aparecen, te hablan y desaparecen, eso que se esconde en la habitación 237… todo esto y más son elementos que hacen de esta película una auténtica y horrorosa obra del séptimo arte. Aún considerándose una mala adaptación y todo, el director ha logrado crear una cinta de horror auténtica y única en su estilo.

Las escenas sin sonido de fondo, el uso de las cámaras en seguimiento en segundo plano, los paneles fijos, la ambientación variante del hotel y los planos inolvidables son de lo más destacable de esta película. Los efectos de sonido son excelentes, sobre todo cuando sustituyen el trabajo de la banda sonora en ambientar ciertas escenas. Por su parte, la banda sonora también consigue transmitir y elevar la tensión y el horror que genera esta cinta a un nuevo nivel. En resumen, esta película es para los que de verdad buscan algo diferente que te deje con más preguntas que respuestas y una sensación rara en el estómago al final.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de terror psicológico y sobrenatural.
