Hello friends, the movie I bring you this week to participate in the contest is about a true story, I saw it a couple of years ago and for me it is the ideal one to participate with it in the theme of the contest of the week. A United Kingdom, touches important points such as the struggle of a nation to conquer its freedom, love and the renunciation of its traditions as a way to achieve it. It all began with a love story between an African prince, Seretse Khama of Botswana, when studying in England he met a young secretary, Ruth Williams, with whom he would fall in love and later marry, contravening the laws of racial segregation, which caused an international conflict.

One of the most inspiring things about the film is that this man risked everything to be with the woman he loved, despite the consequences of his actions, not only for getting married but also for deciding to change the country with his example. To put it in context, Botswana was a protectorate of the United Kingdom, in other words, it was a colony of the United Kingdom and therefore they were the ones who governed and decided what they considered was best for the country, over their natural leaders. Seretse was the heir to rule all the tribes of the nation after his father died and his uncle as regent crowned him. Seretse traveled to London to prepare for the position, but met Ruth, whom he would marry. He believed that racism was an impediment to the development of the nation and that there should be no racial difference, that together we were stronger and all were needed. By 1948, these ideas were considered provocative and frowned upon.

One of the things I liked the most about the film is that, although it seems to be a movie that tells a love story, it is much more than that, it is the story of how a man with his intelligence decided to confront an empire and win using its laws. His struggle is an example for the world, he had to wait years, he had to convince his own tribesmen and the leaders of the other tribes to end with the system that during all his life ruled the country, he sacrificed his status and the family traditions of centuries to achieve the unthinkable to achieve the independence of a nation without firing a shot to do it.

The film teaches us the true sacrifice, the one that touches us personally and the one that we are willing to make to achieve a greater good for our people, not all people in a position of power do it when it leaves them with nothing, only to start over. Seretse, achieved everything he undertook to do, to liberate a nation, to make a country that took the reins of its political, civil and religious decisions, where everyone had a place regardless of their skin color. He led the country to become one of the most modern, prosperous and stable nations in Africa. A man with an integrative vision of his people and of fighting to get ahead, he inspired an entire nation. That is why for me this film is one of the best of its kind.
