The language of Eyes

  I was listening yesterday to a podcast with Steven Spielberg, which was more focused on promoting his new movie "Disclosure Day," which I will definitely watch. But during the talk, they were discussing how important the eyes of his fictional characters are. They cited two characters, mainly the Velociraptor from Jurassic Park and the playful ET with his big eyes. The first example was how important it was for a predator's eyes to look directly at its victims to instill a bit of fear. It is like a lion focused on its prey, meaning "FOOD". And the other example was ET, with its big, round eyes that made it seem friendly. But the alien from the new movie resembles the one the one from the old school, regular grey alien like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Just big, black, and reflective eyes- what does that mean?

  Spielberg made me think of Shakespeare’s quote, "The eyes are doors to the soul". And psychologically speaking, it is known that many emotions are expressed through the eyes and surrounding facial muscles, such as the eyelids and eyebrows. So the grey alien that Spielberg uses doesn't show any of that, so it is more difficult to really understand their emotions: are they here to kill us or to be friends with us? Or none of the previous answers?

  It is something that I also felt in the alien from "Project Hail Mary," which isn't related to Spielberg, and in this case we have an asymmetric alien, without eyes, at least visible. In addition to that, no other facial components. So the only thing that gives us clues about its emotions is certain behaviours like jumping or knocking on the glass. Even Dr. Grace gets frustrated when he doesn't find a face in the alien. If we pay attention to a person's eyes, we will read some basic needs or reactions to our words.

  It is a big thing for me: when I look someone in the eyes, I feel that exchange of emotions, and many times that creates a connection. My daughters, for example. I can see so much about them just looking into their eyes. Sometimes they are just doing their things, and I keep just staring at them, studying a bit what they might be thinking. In the past, I had so much difficulty looking in the eyes because you become vulnerable and also you fear being judged. Sometimes I still have this automated behaviour, but it is more controlled.

  The eyes are really the door to the soul, like Shakespeare said, since probably she felt the same when looking to some one's eye. You can really fall in love for some one just with this pure connection. For me, it is a good place to really establish a connection with someone. And I am still so amazed by Steven Spielberg for really dedicating to this topic in his movies. I admire him a lot.

Citaram dois personagens, principalmente o Velociraptor de Jurassic Park e o brincalhão ET com seus olhos grandes. O primeiro exemplo foi a importância de um predador olhar diretamente para sua vítima para incutir um pouco de medo. É como um leão focado em sua presa, que significa "COMIDA". E o outro exemplo foi o ET, com seus olhos grandes e redondos que o faziam parecer amigável. Mas o alienígena do novo filme se assemelha ao alienígena cinza clássico, como o de Contatos Imediatos do Terceiro Grau. Apenas olhos grandes, negros e reflexivos - o que isso significa?

 Spielberg me fez lembrar da citação de Shakespeare: "Os olhos são as portas da alma". E, psicologicamente falando, sabe-se que muitas emoções são expressas pelos olhos e pelos músculos faciais ao redor, como as pálpebras e as sobrancelhas. Então, o alienígena cinza que Spielberg usa não demonstra nada disso, o que torna mais difícil entender suas emoções: eles estão aqui para nos matar ou para serem nossos amigos? Ou nenhuma das respostas anteriores?

 É algo que também senti no alienígena de "Projeto Ave Maria", que não tem relação com Spielberg, e nesse caso temos um alienígena assimétrico, sem olhos, pelo menos visíveis. Além disso, nenhum outro componente facial. Então, a única coisa que nos dá pistas sobre suas emoções são certos comportamentos, como pular ou bater no vidro. Até o Dr. Grace fica frustrado quando não encontra um rosto no alienígena. Se prestarmos atenção aos olhos de uma pessoa, perceberemos algumas necessidades básicas ou reações às nossas palavras.

 É algo muito importante para mim: quando olho nos olhos de alguém, sinto essa troca de emoções e, muitas vezes, isso cria uma conexão. Minhas filhas, por exemplo. Consigo perceber tanta coisa sobre elas apenas olhando em seus olhos. Às vezes, elas estão simplesmente fazendo suas coisas, e eu fico olhando para elas, tentando entender o que podem estar pensando. No passado, eu tinha muita dificuldade em olhar nos olhos porque a gente se torna vulnerável e também tem medo de ser julgado. Às vezes, ainda observo esse comportamento automatizado, mas de forma mais controlada.

  Os olhos são realmente a porta da alma, como disse Shakespeare, já que provavelmente ela sentiu o mesmo ao olhar nos olhos de alguém. Você pode realmente se apaixonar por alguém apenas com essa conexão pura. Para mim, é um bom lugar para realmente estabelecer uma conexão com alguém. E ainda estou muito impressionado com Steven Spielberg por se dedicar a esse tema em seus filmes. Eu o admiro muito.
