The Ritual: Not a simple monster movie.

  I watched two horror movies in addition to "The Great Flood" during my flights. One was a bit okay, but without much innovation, and the other is the one I will bring today. It is the movie "The Ritual" from 2017. I discovered this movie while doing some queries at chatGPT and it was a solid recommendation. I watched the movie thinking that it was more about psychological horror than really a monster one, but in the end, we had a semi-god type of monster. Well, there are some spoilers in here.

  The basic background is a bit clichê, a group of four grown-up guys decide their men's vacation into a hike in some remote place in Sweden. That was motivated after the guy who wanted to make this trip was killed by robbers in a liquor store, and Luke who was with him in that moment, was hidden and only saw everything happening. So what to expect to see in a deep forest environment without any civilization around? For sure, I would imagine something bad. Especially when they decide to take a shortcut through the woods to reach a hostel that they were going.

  After going through the background story and I don't even need to cite in here that they got lost, because that is obvious. The next scenes start to be terrifying for the group and initially I thought that the main character would be a witch or any woods supernatural folk that usually appear in that type of movie. But no. The creature starts to play with their mind at first, but only touches Luke making some injuries in the chest, a type of marking.

  The creature in the end is a Nordic semi-god. In the movie, there isn't a mention of a name, we understand a bit more about the creature when the last two guys from the group Dom and Luke are captured by humans who were lost in the woods like them. Dom is offered as a sacrifice to the creature, which looks like it has a symbiotic relationship with the villagers; they provide humans and the creature give back some longevity. The creature is mentioned as a Jötunn (a mythical Norse creature), bastard son of the god Loki. I googled a bit and the creature has a name in the book that was the basis for the movie released in 2011. It is called Moder. The creature is a mix of a moose with a human torso coming from the head, a bit creepy. But the creature only exists in the book. It doesn't exist in real Norse mythology.

  The movie focuses a lot in the guilt of Luke about his friend's death in the liquor store, since he just hid and did nothing. And in the end, it brings his redemption. He could have chosen to stay in the village and live in his guilt forever. But he decided to move on and continue to live his life, even after the death of his other friends during the trip. Is it quite poetic, right? Losing 4 friends to understand that he wasn't guilty about a friend murdered by robbers.

  Além de "The Great Flood", assisti a dois filmes de terror durante meus voos. Um era razoável, mas sem muita inovação, e o outro é o que trago hoje. É o filme "The Ritual", de 2017. Descobri esse filme enquanto pesquisava no chatGPT e foi uma ótima recomendação. Assisti ao filme pensando que seria mais sobre terror psicológico do que propriamente um filme de monstros, mas no final, tínhamos um monstro com poderes divinos. Bem, há alguns spoilers aqui.

  O contexto básico é um pouco clichê: um grupo de quatro homens adultos decide transformar suas férias em uma trilha em algum lugar remoto da Suécia. Isso foi motivado pelo fato de o cara que queria fazer essa viagem ter sido morto por ladrões em uma loja de bebidas, e Luke, que estava com ele naquele momento, ter se escondido e apenas visto tudo acontecer. Então, o que esperar de um ambiente de floresta densa sem nenhuma civilização por perto? Com certeza, eu imaginaria algo ruim. Especialmente quando eles decidem pegar um atalho pela mata para chegar a um albergue para onde estavam indo.

  Depois de ler a história de fundo – e eu nem preciso mencionar aqui que eles se perderam, porque isso é óbvio – as cenas seguintes começam a ser aterrorizantes para o grupo, e inicialmente eu pensei que o personagem principal seria uma bruxa ou algum ser sobrenatural da floresta que costuma aparecer nesse tipo de filme. Mas não. A criatura começa a brincar com a mente deles a princípio, mas apenas toca em Luke, causando alguns ferimentos no peito, uma espécie de marca.

  No final, a criatura é um semideus nórdico. No filme, o nome da criatura não é mencionado. Entendemos um pouco mais sobre ela quando os dois últimos integrantes do grupo, Dom e Luke, são capturados por humanos que, assim como eles, estavam perdidos na floresta. Dom é oferecido em sacrifício à criatura, que parece ter uma relação simbiótica com os aldeões: eles fornecem humanos e a criatura lhes devolve um pouco de longevidade. A criatura é mencionada como um Jötunn (uma criatura mítica nórdica), filho bastardo do deus Loki. Pesquisei um pouco no Google e descobri que a criatura tem um nome no livro que serviu de base para o filme lançado em 2011: Moder. A criatura é uma mistura de alce com um torso humano saindo da cabeça, um tanto assustadora. Mas a criatura só existe no livro. Ela não existe na mitologia nórdica real.

  O filme se concentra bastante na culpa de Luke pela morte de seu amigo na loja de bebidas, já que ele simplesmente se escondeu e não fez nada. E, no final, isso traz sua redenção. Ele poderia ter escolhido ficar na aldeia e viver para sempre com a culpa. Mas decidiu seguir em frente e continuar a viver a sua vida, mesmo após a morte dos seus outros amigos durante a viagem. É bastante poético, não é? Perder 4 amigos para entender que não era culpado pelo assassinato de um amigo por ladrões.
