The All Devouring Whale 2025 Anime Review (Pokemon made in China)

After a lot of time i decided to go and watch some anime. Even though, i have already read the manga for most of them out there i said to myself "let's see if we find a hidden gem". The All-devouring Whale is exactly that. Sadly i had already read the manga but i was curious to see the adaptation and animation.

You see, in most of the Chinese and Korean "manga" out there when they get an anime adaptation, 2 things occur. The fist one being the animation which usually sucks and the second one is that they altert the story for some reason or trying to speed up everything. So i was curious to see what the case was for this one. Now, in cases you wonder the plot of the anime is let me spell it out for you in a few words and then i will get into more details.

Do you like Pokemon? Do you like Evolutions? Do you like good old Easter Eggs? Do you like me? Then this is the anime or manga for you!

Plot

The story starts with Fan Lingxiao, let's just call him Fan from now on, who is one of the greatest trainers or beast tamers of his era. He is the leader of his own Sect and just like Pokemon we got ranks and stuff. So he managed to increase the rank of his sect and is not getting ready for a final let's say, fight with another sect in order to get to the best league or something.

If he manages to do that, then with his rank, he can open an investigation about the descent of his clan and who killed his parents. The fight takes place in a colosseum-like building. he begins by summoning his Spirit (the Pokémon are called like that), which is a giant flying whale. His rivals got a giant monkey like King Kong. It's better than reading it, trust me :P

Long story short in the middle of the fight his whale transforms into a zombie like whale and devours him. One year later, he awakens in the body of Liu Fengmang. Ofc he doesn't have his spirit, instead he got 2 low rank ones and is trying to find answers and again reach the top.

In the meantime the government let's say issued an order to kill all the catfish spirits, the ones that evolve into a whale. Soon he manages to find one the last remaining ones and is one of the few people in the world that knows how to quickly level it up and evolve it.

Good and Bad

The good things are the actual story, plot and general idea. Even though you can easily understand that they "stole" the idea from Pokémon, they even got an easter egg with a Pokémon center and a nurse :P They managed to do more than that.

He or they, i don't know how many are behind this one, managed to create a universe with different evolutions, some are good some not so good but at the end of the day we got variety. There also different ranks, so not only leveling matters. There are 4 ranks, Soldier, General, Lord and Emperor, so for example if you have a level 10 soldier and a level 10 Lord, the Lord will definitely have better stats.

Also in order to evolve your spirit, the higher you go, the harder its gets. or example at first you may need to reach, let's say level 20 for the first evolution but then for the next on,e you need some additional items besides leveling.

Another really cool element that they added is the spirit actually die one and for all. So you may have some battle where the best tamer wins and it's like until KO or until the other spirit can't fight but in the outer worlds other people or other spirits can kill each other. So with that elemented added everything gets darker. For instance you may have a spirit for 20 years and someday someone may literally kill it.

Last but not least, because the manga has like 180-200 chapters, they add another interesting element in the story, a new set of villains but i won't say more, i don't want to make any spoilers. Note that the animation is freaking great, especially in the first 2 episodes.

Now regarding the bad, the anime goes super fast and a lot of information or events are missing. Again i think that this principle is completely wrong as the source material is quite good to be honest. I don't understand why the butcher great Chinese and Korean ones like for example Tower of God, or God of Highschool, it's such a same. I would urge you to see the anime and if you like it search for the chinese manga instead.
