HADASHI NO GEN /Barefoot Gen [Review] ESP/ENG

Yesterday I came across this film almost by chance, I was changing channels when suddenly I found this animation on a national channel, at first I thought it was any cartoon, and in fact I found it strange that they were broadcasting it at that time (after midnight) however it took me a few seconds to understand that it was not a film aimed at a children's audience but a work of art made with the aim of raising awareness about what war causes, but later I will give you my opinion, for now let me give you a little context.
Ayer me topé con esta película casi por casualidad, estaba cambiando de canal cuando de pronto conseguí esta animación en un canal nacional, al inicio creí que era cualquier dibujo animado, y de hecho me pareció raro que lo emitieran a esa hora (después de medianoche) sin embargo me bastaron unos segundos para comprender que no se trataba de una película dirigida a un publico infantil sino de una obra de arte hecha con el objetivo de crear consciencia acerca de lo que ocasiona la guerra, pero más adelante les daré mi opinión, por ahora permítanme darles un poco de contexto.
Gen is a boy who lives with his father and siblings in Hiroshima in 1945, and this date is important because it gives us a good historical context of the time in which they lived, as the end of the war and Japan's surrender were approaching. Gen's family suffered because there wasn't enough food for everyone, so everyone agreed to prioritize the little there was for his mother, since she was pregnant and needed more nutrients. One morning, while Gen is heading to school with her friend, she sees a plane fly by. At first, everyone thinks it will start bombing as usual, but what came out of there was a single bomb that contained a nuclear hell (literally), and it falls with all its weight on the city, destroying everything in its path. Gen manages to survive, although he is horrified by the shock of having seen his dead friend, but upon arriving home he found his pregnant mother trying to lift the foundations of the house to rescue the rest of the family (the father and the two remaining children, the eldest and the youngest). Gen rushes to help her but the father orders him to take his mother and go away. From that moment on, Gen becomes his mother's protector and both will have to learn to survive with the aftermath of what that nuclear hell left behind.
Gen es un niño que vive con su padre y sus hermanos en Hiroshima en 1945, y esta fecha es importante porque nos da un buen contexto histórico del tiempo en el que vivían, se acercaba el final de la guerra y la rendición de Japón. La familia de Gen sufría porque no había suficiente comida para todos, por lo tanto todos estaban de acuerdo en priorizar lo poco que hubiese para la madre, ya que ella estaba embarazada y necesitaba más nutrientes. En una mañana, mientras Gen se dirige al colegio en compañía de su amiga, ve que pasa un avión, al inicio todos piensan que comenzará a bombardear como siempre pero lo que salió de allí fue una sola bomba que contenía un infierno nuclear (literalmente) y esta cae con todo su peso sobre la ciudad destruyendo todo a su paso. Gen logra sobrevivir, aunque está horrorizado por la impresión de haber visto a su amiga muerta, pero al llegar a casa consiguió a su madre embarazada tratando de levantar los cimientos de la casa para rescatar al resto de la familia (el padre y los dos hijos restantes, la mayor y el menor) Gen se apresura a ayudarla pero el padre le ordena que tome a su madre y se aleje. A partir de ese momento Gen se convierte en el protector de su mamá y ambos tendrán que aprender a sobrevivir con las secuelas de lo que dejó ese infierno nuclear.
I couldn't help but associate this film with another one I saw a while ago and that I also reviewed here, I am referring to Grave of the Fireflies, since it also deals with the theme of war and has as its main focus resilience, survival, the loss of innocence and the impact of war on everyday life, however, in my opinion I think that this film that I review today has a much more hopeful ending than Grave of the Fireflies, but I will talk about that later. This film, despite being an animation and seeming "childish" does not skimp on showing crudeness and brutality in its images, as a way for the audience to know without romanticism what really happened, which makes the hairs on your skin stand up.
No pude evitar asociar esta película con otra que vi hace tiempo y que también reseñé por aquí, me refiero a La Tumba de las luciérnagas, ya que también maneja la temática de la guerra y tienen como principal enfoque la resiliencia, la supervivencia, la pérdida de la inocencia y el impacto de la guerra en la vida cotidiana, sin embargo a mi parecer creo que esta película que les reseño hoy tiene un final mucho más esperanzador que La Tumba de las Luciérnagas, pero de eso les hablaré más adelante. Esta película, a pesar de ser una animación y de parecer "infantil" no escatima en mostrar crudeza y brutalidad en sus imágenes, como una forma de la audiencia conozca sin romanticismo lo que realmente sucedió, lo cuál hace que se te ericen los vellos de la piel.
To give you even more historical context I will tell you that this attack occurred as a response to the previous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which obviously was not right at all, however the USA acted with true cruelty and excessive hatred by striking back because Pearl Harbor was just a US naval base while they attacked two cities full of children, old people, men and women, also making sure that physical and mental after-effects remained and that these would extend over the years (since that is how radiation works) so the scene in this film that moved me the most is obviously the impact of the bomb, since the animation allows to show frame by frame and in a very graphic and realistic way how the tissues in the bodies of people and animals were disintegrated, which implies that many of them did not even manage to discover what happened.
Para darles aún más contexto histórico les diré que este ataque ocurrió como respuesta al ataque previo de Japón a Pearl Harbor, lo cuál obviamente no estaba nada bien desde luego, sin embargo USA actuó con verdadera crueldad y odio desmedido al devolver el golpe porque Pearl Harbor era tan solo una base naval estadounidense mientras que ellos atacaron dos ciudades repletas de niños, viejos, hombres y mujeres, asegurándose además de que quedaran secuelas físicas y mentales y que estas se extendieran a lo largo de los años (ya que así actúa la radiación) así que la escena de esta película que más me conmovió es obviamente la del impacto de la bomba, ya que la animación permite mostrar cuadro por cuadro y de una manera muy gráfica y realista como se fueron desintegrando los tejidos en los cuerpos de las persona y animales, lo que da a entender que muchos de ellos ni siquiera alcanzaron a descubrir lo que ocurrió.
The film also shows how Gen and her mother must survive the catastrophe facing the consequences while they watch some survivors die, not knowing if the same will happen to them, which is heartbreaking, but they must also endure hunger, uncertainty and discrimination, since people who lived in other latitudes feared that the survivors could contaminate them with radiation, however I was very struck by seeing that despite everything Gen and her mother were willing to share the little they had with a child they decided to adopt, a child who was also identical to one of the brothers that Gen lost, this along with the images we see at the end gives a new focus to the story as Gen begins to recover the hair lost due to radiation, and some wheat sprouts begin to emerge from the earth, despite the fact that they had been told that the earth would not produce anything in 70 years, so we can take this as an allegory of hope and reward for the good heart of the protagonist.
La película además muestra como Gen y su madre deben sobrevivir a la catástrofe enfrentando las consecuencias mientras ven morir a algunos sobrevivientes, sin saber si lo mismo le sucederá a ellos, lo cuál es desgarrador, pero además deben soportar el hambre, la incertidumbre y la discriminación, ya que las personas que vivían en otras latitudes temían que los sobrevivientes pudieran contaminarlos con radiación, sin embargo me llamó mucho la atención el ver que a pesar de todo Gen y su madre estuvieron dispuestos a compartir lo poco que tenían con un niño al que decidieron adoptar, un niño que además era idéntico a uno de los hermanos que Gen perdió, esto junto con las imágenes que vemos al final le da un nuevo enfoque a la historia pues Gen comienza a recuperar el cabello perdido a causa de la radiación ,y en la tierra comienzan a salir algunos brotes de trigo, a pesar de que habían dicho que la tierra no produciría nada en 70 años, así que podemos tomar esto como una alegoría de esperanza y recompensa por el buen corazón del protagonista.
The film is a clear critique of war, a way of demonstrating that wars are the result of ego and arrogance, where rulers destroy entire nations in the name of "freedom" or "the homeland," even though their only interests are political and/or economic. Entire families are separated or destroyed, the economy crumbles like a cookie, and human beings experience their own fragility in the cruelest way. In short, it's a film that, even if it's a long shot, is worth seeing and analyzing so that new generations can better understand the history of humanity. La película es una clara crítica contra la guerra, una forma de demostrar que estas son el resultado del ego y la soberbia, donde los gobernantes destruyen naciones enteras en nombre de "la libertad" o "la patria" aunque sus únicos intereses son políticos y/o económicos. Familias enteras quedan separadas o destruidas, la economía se desmorona como galleta, y el ser humano experimenta de la manera más cruel su propia fragilidad. En fin, es una película que aunque sea viaja es digna de verla y analizarla para que las nuevas generaciones puedan comprender un poco más la historia de la humanidad.
