Review: A beautiful mind (2001) [ENG - ESP]
It took me twenty-two years to see this film, and it wasn't because I didn't know about it. The year in which it won several Oscars, its existence could spread, so I've known about it since then. However, I said to myself: "I want to see it well, concentrated and pay close attention to it. " In 2023 that moment arrived, and although there are certain characteristics that make the two decades of difference noticeable, the message is still intact.
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT
The great Russell Crowe portrays John Nash, an illustrious Nobel Prize-winning mathematician who himself suffers from paranoid schizophrenia in a difficult time, having less knowledge of this condition and its aggressive treatments. The story shows part of the love story he had with his wife Alice (Jennifer Connelly) and how she had to get involved with her husband's illness.
It is not a story faithful to the real events. We have already seen this resource by other individuals related to the world of the seventh art. Therefore, this film seems like a fictionalized story that adds elements and moments that did not exist to give cohesion to the story and that Hollywood touch that sells more tickets to theaters. The film was directed by Ron Howard and the screenplay was written by Akiva Goldsman.
THE MENTAL FACTOR IS KEY
When I finished watching it, I was satisfied. However, to understand it better, knowing the ending and the context, I knew that to appreciate it better I would have to see it a second time. That time came and now I am writing this review. I recommend you do so as well, whether you have seen it once or not.
We already know how cruel mental illnesses are, and they are being given a lot of importance nowadays. That's why it's a subject that has interested me for several years. I even think that if you have knowledge about them, have suffered from one or if you have taken care of one of these patients, you will appreciate the dialogues, situations and feelings shown in the film.
If you like this genre, you will already know that the director will want to take you where he wants, and take advantage of the wide scenario that gives you a story of a troubled mind to add things to the story that will seek to mislead you. The details will be there, and you will catch some, but others will not be so easy to decipher. Will you be in the mind of the protagonist, the director or are they just your guesses?
SOME TOPICS
Obviously, the search for truth and the real characterizes John Nash when he faces a psychiatric diagnosis. We already know that schizophrenia causes the person to see, hear and feel things that are only in their mind. It's one of the worst tricks our brains can play on us. What's real? What's not? That's what the mathematician began to grapple with. How do you convince others of what you think is real? The difficult thing is that being misunderstood increases the desire to isolate oneself, which some people (like Nash) already do because of their personality or profession.
The production shows with sincerity how social prejudice is seen in this type of patients. The mockery, the misunderstanding, the questions that arise in others what they see and hear. Suddenly they become a circus for others, where they paid a ticket just to watch, regardless of the fact that the owner of the circus is being crushed by one of his elephants. Faced with such a scenario, Nash's social adaptation will not be easy.
The unconditional support of the people around the patient is epitomized by Nash's wife, Alice. If this is not an accurate representation of the facts, was this woman really so sweet? Could she really be so madly in love with this man to overcome the great unknowns she had about him? Could she really have coped with her husband's illness "blindly," not knowing if he might actually be a danger to her or her son? How could she see the truth through her husband's sad eyes over the logic of the medical staff? The love, kindness, gentleness and beauty that draw this character are sublime.
How valuable it is to be included in normal, ordinary environments Patients must cope with this situation as best they can. In the midst of their fears, impulses, thoughts, ideas and feelings, these people can still benefit from being involved in "ordinary" situations. In fact, it is one of the health practitioners repeat several times: try to let the patient lead a normal life. For them, they will have to find the treatment, the medicine and the right dosage for each one, sometimes by trial and error.
SOME STRANGE THINGS
I admit it! You don't cover the sun with one finger - did Russell Crowe go from a vigorous gladiator to a noble mathematician who isn't good at being a teacher? Suddenly you get the impression that, in the middle of a stressful chase situation Russell will pull a big sword out of nowhere and end up with everyone around him materializing his longed-for revenge. But no. His still-trained body hides behind a plaid suit that you'll only be able to see a little bit of when he enters to teach some youngsters in just a thin white flannel, which looks like the sleeve will tear when he raises his arm to write on the blackboard. True, Crowe was nominated for an Oscar for that role, but after seeing him in such a role just a year before, it is strange to see him now in this way, where our minds can make us judge that he is even working below his capabilities. But well, it's all subjectivity.
To my taste, I found the color palette with which the film starts a bit annoying. Although it will still have orange and ochre tones, they are too predominant in the first few minutes. I think it is a selection to place us in the time the director wants. As the story progresses we can see other colors that are more harmonious, pleasant and modern.
WHAT I LIKED THE MOST
It is to be expected that the mental factor of the protagonist had to be exploited, and this had to be done taking care of the details. The personification of the shortcomings has been masterfully presented. It was somewhat disappointing to learn that not all of them were actually in Nash's head, but they illustrate very well what can happen in these patients and in any of us! Affective patterns, deficits and displacements are at our core, and bravely admitted. Standing ovation for you if you manage to identify with some of Nash's.
The humor of John Nash. I don't know about you, but I laughed at all the jokes he made, several of them without smiling. Some of them were sarcastic, clever, basic, frank, direct, literal.... God! He's a normal guy in this respect. He even plays on the paranoia the patient's caregiver may feel or the naivety of the uninformed. In life we cannot focus only on serious, intellectual matters. We need to laugh, to have fun, and that is perfectly shown in the script. Now, again, if this movie has some fiction in the protagonist, did John Nash really have this sense of humor?
The mind is very powerful, and we already know that. When it is unbalanced it is very difficult to find logic in many things. And here comes this story. A man who surely used more of his brain than millions of people (probably including me there) used this same vital organ so that logic beat the mind. How can this be possible? How many others can say they did the same? We are talking about intangible things here.... They are not some malignant cells that will be fought with strong treatment, they are not a wound that must wait for the tissues to heal, they are not cells that need time to regenerate, they are ideas, thoughts, memories.... How can you fix that? Using the same resource that is producing them: your brain. Incredible... And this can be especially difficult because of our professions. Mathematicians find a lot of logic in their area. But here you may wonder: "What is the logic that I am imagining things? ".
The eternal struggle between logic and love. And in this respect everyone takes out his best gloves and hits the opponent hard under his eye. In one corner, John Nash, who seeks to rationalize what he feels once he meets the woman who moved the floor like an earthquake. In the other corner, Alicia, who with her youth, freshness, optimistic vision of the future and very sure of what she wants, hits John's heart harder than a defibrillator with well thought out arguments and sentences that stun her listener.
THE SCENE
I narrowly decided on the one showing Alice's visit to her husband in the psychiatric ward. She has already learned of Dr. Rosen's opinion. At the same time, this is when we confirm what we have probably started to wonder. Will she believe the doctor or her husband? Russell and Jennifer's acting is top notch. Their faces change as the dialogue progresses and each tries to probe the other. The compositions are simple and there are no unnecessary distractions. They are close shots that allow you to get involved in the conversation. The script is kept simple and straightforward, with no unnecessary details, and although it ends abruptly, the goal is achieved: a complete frame of the situation.
MY OPINION
A film that surely gave satisfaction to its creators, without having as much expectation or marketing as other productions. Despite spending two hours and that perhaps could have been a little shorter, you can see the intention of the director to sustain the number of scenes by showing each one, updating the situation in which the characters are. He also seeks to show you in detail what Nash is going through.
I like the subtle decision to include inanimate objects with some of the characters. I needed a second viewing to be able to perceive them. The use of abrupt camera turns are reserved only for particular characters and moments, telling you: "Hey, kid, wake up. This is important. "
Do I recommend it? Of course I do!
And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, deep, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

First time I choose three sentences from the same character, but I had a hell of a time choosing just three. The script is rich in truth, cleverly stated sentences, straightforward and simple humor. No doubt that is another argument for watching this movie. It will show you how an imperfect brain can achieve balance aided by the altruistic and sincere love it takes from just one person you love. That brilliance can be recovered, and that sometimes bad things don't go away, and you have to learn to live with them. These are arguments for us to convince ourselves that we can be another of the beautiful minds.
Tardé veintidos años para ver éste film, y no era porque no sabía de él. El año en el que ganó varios Oscar pudo propagarse su existencia, por eso la conozco desde entonces. Sin embargo, me dije: "Deseo verla bien, concentrado y prestarle mucha atención." En 2023 llegó ese momento, y a pesar de que hay ciertas características que hace notar las dos décadas de diferencia, el mensaje sigue intacto.
DE QUÉ SE TRATA
El gran Russel Crowe representa a John Nash, un ilustre matemático ganador del premio Nobel que a su vez sufre de esquizofrenia paranoide en un tiempo difícil, por tener un menor conocimiento de ésta condición y sus tratamientos agresivos. La historia muestra parte de la historia de amor que tuvo con su esposa Alice (Jennifer Connelly) y cómo ella tuvo que involucrarse con la enfermedad de su esposo.
No es una historia fiel a los hechos reales. Ya hemos visto este recurso por parte de otros individuos relacionados con el mundo del séptimo arte. Por eso, ésta película parece un relato ficcionado que agrega elementos y momentos que no existieron para darle cohesión a la historia y ese toque de Hollywood que hace vender más boletos a las salas de cine. La dirección estuvo a cargo de Ron Howard y el guión fue escrito por Akiva Goldsman.
EL FACTOR MENTAL ES CLAVE
Al terminar de verla quedé satisfecho. Sin embargo, para entenderla mejor, sabiendo el final y el contexto, sabía que para apreciarla mejor tendría que verla por segunda vez. Llegó ese momento y ahora hago esta reseña. Te recomiendo también hacerlo, sea que la hayas visto una vez o ninguna.
Ya sabemos lo crueles que se son las enfermedades mentales, y a ellas se les está dando mucha importancia hoy día. Por eso, es un tema que desde hace varios años me ha interesado. Incluso, creo que si tienes conocimiento sobre ellas, has sufrido de alguna o si has cuidado de alguno de esos pacientes podrás apreciar los diálogos, situaciones y sentimientos mostrados en el film.
Si te gusta este género, ya de seguro sabrás de que el director querrá llevarte por donde quiere, y aprovechar el amplio escenario que te brinda relatar una historia de una mente en problemas para adicionar cosas al relato que buscarán despistarte. Los detalles estarán allí, y pescarás algunos, pero otros no serán tan fácil de descifrar. ¿Estarás en la mente del protagonista, del director o sólo son conjeturas tuyas?
ALGUNOS TEMAS
Obviamente, la búsqueda de la verdad y lo real caracteriza a John Nash cuando enfrenta un diagnóstico psiquiátrico. Ya sabemos que la esquizofrenia hace que la persona vea, escuche y sienta cosas que sólo están en su mente. Es una de las peores jugadas que puede hacernos nuestro cerebro. ¿Qué es real? ¿Qué no lo es? Eso es lo que empezó a lidiar el matemático. ¿Cómo convences a otros de lo que tú crees que es real? Lo difícil del asunto es que cuando al ser incomprendido aumentan las ganas de aislarse, cosa que ya lo hacen algunos (como Nash) debido a su personalidad o profesión.
La producción muestra con sinceridad cómo se ve el prejuicio social en éste tipo de pacientes. Las burlas, la incomprensión, las interrogantes que surgen en otros lo que ven y escuchan. De pronto se transforman en un circo para los demás, donde pagaron una entrada sólo para ver, independientemente que al dueño del circo lo esté aplastando uno de sus elefantes. Ante un escenario así, la adaptación social de Nash no se antojará sencilla.
El apoyo incondicional de las personas que rodean al paciente está personificado en Alicia, la esposa de Nash. Si esta no es una representación apegada a los hechos, ¿de verdad ésta mujer fue tan dulce? ¿De verdad pudo estar tan perdidamente enamorada de éste hombre para superar las grandes incógnitas que tenía sobre él? ¿De verdad pudo sobrellevar la enfermedad de su esposo "a ciegas", sin saber si de verdad podría ser un peligro para ella o su hijo? ¿Cómo pudo ver la verdad a través de los tristes ojos de su esposo por encima de la lógica que exponía el personal médico? El amor, la bondad, la amabilidad y la belleza que dibujan a éste personaje son sublimes.
Lo valioso que resulta la inclusión en ambientes normales y comunes. Los pacientes deben enfrentar ésta situación lo mejor que pueden. En medio de sus miedos, impulsos, pensamientos, ideas y sentimientos, estas personas pueden seguir sacando provecho de involucrarse en situaciones "comunes y corrientes". De hecho, es uno de los médicos de la salud repiten varias veces: tratar de que el paciente lleve una vida normal. Para ellos deberán encontrar el tratamiento, la medicina y la dosis adecuada para cada uno, a veces por ensayo y error.
ALGUNAS COSAS EXTRAÑAS
¡Lo admito! No se tapa el sol con un dedo. ¿Russell Crowe pasó de ser un vigoroso gladiador a un noble matemático que no se le da bien ser docente? De pronto da la impresión que, en medio de una situación de persecución estresante Russell sacará una gran espada de la nada y terminará con todos a su alrededor materializando su añorada venganza. Pero no. Su aún entrenado cuerpo se esconde detrás de un traje a cuadros que sólo podrás ver un poco cuando entra a dar clase a unos jóvenes con tan sólo una fina franela blanca, que parece que la manga se romperá cuando sube el brazo para escribir en la pizarra. Es verdad, Crowe fue nominado al Oscar por ese papel, pero es que luego de verlo en semejante papel apenas un año antes, resulta extraño verlo ahora de ésta forma, donde nuestras mentes pueden hacernos juzgar de que incluso está trabajando por debajo de sus capacidades. Pero bueno, todo es subjetividad.
A mi gusto, me pareció algo molesta la paleta de colores con la que inicia el film. Aunque aún tendrá tonos naranjas y ocres, son demasiado predominantes en los primeros minutos. Creo que es una selección para ubicarnos en el tiempo que quiere el director. A medida que avanza la historia podemos ver otros colores que son más armoniosos, agradables y modernos.
LO QUE MÁS ME GUSTÓ
Es de esperar de que había que explotar el factor mental del protagonista, y esto debía hacerse cuidando los detalles. La personificación de las carencias ha quedado magistralmente presentado. Fue un tanto desilusionante saber de que no todos estuvieron realmente en la cabeza de Nash, pero ilustran muy bien lo que puede suceder en éstos pacientes ¡y en cualquiera de nosotros! Los patrones, carencias y desplazamientos afectivos están en nuestra esencia, y con valentía hay que admitirlo. Ovación de pie para ti si logras identificarte con algunas de las de Nash.
*El humor de John Nash es buenísimo. No se tú, pero yo me reí con todos los chistes que hizo, varios de ellos sin sonreír. Algunos fueron sarcásticos, inteligentes, básicos, francos, directos, literales... ¡Rayos! Es un tipo normal en éste aspecto. Incluso, llega a jugar con la paranoia que puede sentir el cuidador del paciente o la ingenuidad de los desinformados. En la vida no podemos enfocarnos sólo en asuntos serios e intelectuales. Necesitamos reírnos, divertirnos, y eso se muestra perfectamente en el guión. Ahora, de nuevo, si esta película tiene algo de ficción en el protagonista, ¿de verdad John Nash tenía éste sentido del humor?
La mente es muy poderosa, y ya lo sabemos. Cuando está desequilibrada es muy difícil hallar la lógica en muchas cosas. Y aquí nos llega ésta historia. Un hombre que de seguro usó más su cerebro que millones de personas (probablemente esté incluido yo allí) usó éste mismo vital órgano para que la lógica venciera a la mente. ¿Cómo puede ser esto posible? ¿Cuántos más podrán decir que hicieron lo mismo? Estamos hablando de cosas intangibles... No son unas células malignas que serán combatidas con fuerte tratamiento, no es una herida que debe esperar a que se sanen los tejidos, no son células que necesitan tiempo para regenerarse, son ideas, pensamientos, recuerdos... ¿cómo puedes arreglar eso? Usando el mismo recurso que te los está produciendo: tu cerebro. Increíble... Y esto puede ser especialmente difícil por nuestras profesiones. Los matemáticos encuentran mucha lógica en su área. Pero aquí se preguntará: "¿Cuál es la lógica de que esté imaginando cosas?"
La eterna lucha entre la lógica y el amor. Y a este respecto cada quien saca sus mejores guantes y golpea fuertemente al contrario debajo de su ojo. En una esquina, John Nash, que busca racionalizar lo que siente una vez que conoce a la mujer que le movió el piso como si fuera un terremoto. En la otra esquina, Alicia, que con su juventud, frescura, visión optimista del futura y muy segura de lo que quiere, golpea el corazón de John con más fuerza que un desfibrilador con argumentos y oraciones bien pensadas que aturden a su oyente.
LA ESCENA
Por muy poco, me decidí por la que muestra la visita de Alicia a su esposo en el psiquiátrico. Ya se ha enterado de la opinión del Dr. Rosen. A la vez, es cuando nosotros confirmamos lo que probablemente hayamos empezado a preguntarnos. ¿Le creerá al doctor o a su esposo? La actuación de Russell y Jennifer es de primer nivel. Sus rostros cambian a medida que el diálogo avanza y cada cual trata de indagar en el otro. Las composiciones son sencillas y no hay distracciones innecesarias. Son tomas cercanas que permiten que te involucres en la conversación. El guión se mantiene sencillo y directo, sin detalles innecesarios, y aunque termina abruptamente, el objetivo se logra: un marco completo de la situación.
MI OPINIÓN
Una película que de seguro dio satisfacción a sus creadores, sin tener tanta expectativa ni marketing como otras producciones. A pesar de pasar las dos horas y que quizás pudo ser un poco más cortas, se nota la intención que tiene el director de sostener el número de escenas por lo que muestra cada una, actualizando la situación en la que se encuentran los personajes. Además, busca mostrarte con detalles lo que está viviendo Nash.
Me gusta la sutil decisión de incluir objetos inanimados con algunos de los personajes. Yo necesité una segunda visualización para poder percibirlas. El uso de los giros abruptos de cámara están reservados sólo para personajes y momentos determinados, diciéndote: "Hey, muchacho, despiértate. Esto es importante."
¿La recomiendo? ¡Claro que sí!
Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!
"Lo puedo arreglar. Con algo de tiempo" (John Nash)
"Sólo en las misteriosa ecuación del amor existe una lógica verdadera" (John Nash)
"Sí le asigno valor a las cosas" (John Nash)
Primera vez que escojo tres frases del mismo personaje, pero me costó muchísimo escoger sólo tres. El guión es rico en verdades, frases inteligentemente enunciadas, humor directo y sencillo. No cabe duda de que es otro argumento para ver esta película. Te enseñará como puede un cerebro imperfecto poder lograr el equilibrio ayudado por el amor altruista y sincero que se necesita de apenas una sola persona a la que ames. Que la brillantez se puede recuperar, y que a veces las cosas malas no se van, y tienes que aprender a convivir con ellas. Son argumentos para que nos convenzamos que podemos ser otra de las mentes hermosas.

Saludos amigo, una producción que suena muy buena y también me ha pasado que me toca ver dos o tres veces una película para poder entender cada detalle de la misma. Esta que nos compartes abarca una serie de temas que tiene mucho de que hablar y sobre todo la manera como involucran a dicho personajes y como lo comentas es una enfermedad muy difícil, pero quien dijo que era imposible. Esa frases están muy buenas y me imagino que cada una fue utilizada en la mejor escena de la película, así que la buscaré y ver qué tal me va con ella. Gracias por compartirlo con nosotros.
Sí, verla por segunda vez ayuda mucho, y en especial aquellas en las que tratan de engañarte con las secuencias. Me ha sorprendido que tenga tantas frases buenas ésta película, hablando bien del guionista que acopló bien la idea a éste relato. Espero puedas verla pronto. Saludos @davidpena21

A veces no podemos entender cómo llegamos tan tarde a una película o a un libro, pero esa sensación queda recompensada - creo - con la experiencia personal de maravillarnos con algo en nuestro propio tiempo. Esta cinta, el guión, la historia, la actuación de Crowe, es de las mejores obras que se hayan hecho jamás y te felicito por verla y por traer a esta plataforma algo diferente a lo que ofrece la mayoría de servicios de streaming hoy día.

Esa primera parte de tu comentario es caviar. Y creo que de eso se trata al fin y al cabo, puesto que muchos buscan ver una película y tienen su opinión firme sobre ella, pero difiere a mil años luz de la nuestra cuando vamos. Y a veces vemos una película nosotros mismos y nos parece normal, promedio, pero al volverla a ver, la apreciamos mejor y vemos cosas que no vimos la primera vez, y elevamos nuestra calificación. Entendí a la perfección el “llegó ese momento”, en referencia al tiempo que tomaste para verla como querías. Me ha pasado con otras películas.
Soy una amante de esta producción, creo que no solo cuenta una historia maravillosa, sino que además nos lleva a reflexionar mucho.
Me causó gracia lo que dijiste de que no sabías en qué momento saca una espada Crowe, jajaj. No me dio la misma sensación y en ese punto difiero un poco con tu opinión. Acá va mi idea en tono súper amistoso, porque a veces escribiendo se puede malinterpretar el cómo lo dice.
Sí que comprendo lo que decís sobre que puede parecer que está trabajando por debajo de sus capacidades, pero creo que por el contrario, muestra su potencial como actor de primera, ya que en papeles sumamente diferentes logró prácticamente lo más alto, que es ubicarse entre las mejores interpretaciones del año.
Me encantó tu sector de “lo que más me gustó”, ahora quiero ver la peli otra vez porque no me acuerdo mucho del humor, y me gusta lo que contás jaja. La vi hace bastante tiempo igual, como unos 5 años.

Hola estimada @belug . Me alegra mucho que hayas pasado por aquí y darle una oportunidad a éstas líneas. Agradezco mucho tu opinión, y claro que estoy de acuerdo contigo. Asumir ese reto habla muy bien de Russell, y por eso sigue siendo uno de los mayores referentes de esos años. Y salió bien, porque estuvo nominado por ese papel a los Premios Oscar. Pero creo que entendiste un poco el sentido de ése párrafo, que era hacerlos sonreír y hacer una efímera comparación entre dos cosas totalmente distintas, es como comparar naranjas con uvas. Tú tienes toda la razón, y me encanta que te hayas tomado el tiempo para dejarla en mi publicación, agregándole valor.

John Nash fue un hombre realmente brillante que luchó con la esquizofrenia hasta poder discernir la realidad de lo que no era mediante esfuerzos conscientes. En sus últimos días, el y su esposa cuidaron de su hijo quien sufre de la misma condición.
En mi caso, había leído primero el libro de Sylvia Nasar, cosa que me hizo querer ver la película, y creo que esto fue al mismo tiempo lo que hizo que no me gustara tanto. No cuenta tanto los detalles más controvertidos y las imperfecciones de Nash fuera de su cuadro mental.
Dicho esto, entiendo las libertades creativas tomadas por el director y que fue estilizada para crear una historia para la pantalla grande. De todas formas, no la considero una mala película.

El eterno dilema de cual es mejor: el libro o la película. Me imagino la posición en la que te encontraste, y es común ver que coinciden contigo. Para mi fue un poco decepcionante conocer esas libertades, porque ¿"fueron muy buenas para ser verdad"? Tal vez... Saludos @jesalmofficial
