Review | From up on Poppy Hill: My first Studio Ghibli film [ENG | ESP]

Kokuriko-zaka kara is a 2011 film directed by Goro Miyazaki. It's an anime that has it all: drama, comedy, romance, and student life. The plot is set in 1963 during the preparations for the Tokyo Olympics and focuses on the life of student Umi Matsuzaki, a young woman who raises the flags every day at her house on the hill facing the sea. When she is not at school, Umi helps her grandmother run the guesthouse where she lives with other women and her two brothers. However, because of her younger sister, she ends up involved in the struggle of the school's student groups to save the old, dilapidated historic building where the clubs are based, the “Quartier Latin,” from demolition. In the midst of all this, Umi meets Shun, a young student from the journalism club who is 100% committed to saving the building.

I thought the film was truly beautiful. I couldn't believe how sharp it looked, even though it was released more than 10 years ago. I fell in love with the landscapes. There is so much detail in every shot: the colors of the flowers, the village, the color of the sea, the soundtrack... everything is impeccable. In addition, the story gives you drama, sadness, romance, suspense, and, of course, a touch of comedy, all in just the right measure.

It's impossible not to grow fond of the characters. Each one develops throughout the film, especially the protagonists. Despite being an animated film, the dialogues and the story itself have a lot of depth. The reason why Umi always raises the flag would break anyone's heart.

La película me pareció una auténtica belleza, no podía creer lo nítida que se veía a pesar de que fue estrenada hace más de 10 años, quedé enamorada de los paisajes, hay demasiado detalle en cada plano, los colores de las flores, el pueblo, el color del mar, el soundtrack todo es impecable, además la historia te da un drama, tristeza, romance, suspenso y no puede faltar ese toque de comedia, todo en su justa medida.

Es imposible no encariñarte con los personajes, cada uno tiene su desarrollo durante la película, sobre todo los protagonistas, a pesar de ser una película animada, sus diálogos y la historia en sí tienen mucha profundidad, el motivo por el que Umi siempre iza la bandera le rompe el corazón a cualquiera.

On the subject of the demolition of the building, I think it makes a very special nod to how important it is that generations do not want to and cannot forget the past. If we do not honor the past, how will we learn to be better in the future?

Finally, I really liked the importance of the Korean War in the story. It is the backdrop to Umi and Shun's past. Far from fiction, The Hill of Poppies has touches of reality. War, like all conflicts, causes deaths and destroys families. It shows those incomplete families who struggled to stay afloat in the turbulent sea of pain that comes with losing someone in a place as cruel as war.
