After gems like Ladybird, the beautiful adaptation of Little Women, and the box-office hit Barbie with Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig's name is familiar to almost everyone, but not everyone knows that before becoming a screenwriter and film director, this incredible woman acted in and starred in a number of films. Today, I want to show you some of that lesser-known side of this talented filmmaker.

Hoy, quiero mostrarles algo de esa faceta menos explorada de esta talentosa cineasta.

Mistress America (2015)

Written by Gerwig along with her husband Noah Baumbach, who also directs, Mistress America is an independent film that navigates between romantic comedy and coming-of-age drama. It tells the story of Tracy (Lola Kirke), a lonely, unpopular freshman starting her first year of college in the vast, beautiful, and intimidating city of New York. Tracy's life unfolds without much sparkle, amidst the routine and tedium of being just another face in the crowd, until she meets the woman who is about to become her stepsister (she's the daughter of the man who will marry her mother), a dreamy and adventurous thirty-something named Brooke (Greta Gerwig). For Tracy, much younger and less experienced, Brooke is a force of nature, an ambitious, determined woman who dresses well and dares to do everything that frightens Tracy. This leads her little stepsister to idolize her from the start, but Tracy also sees Brooke as a wounded, confused, vulnerable woman—someone who often proves to be too noble and innocent for such a cruel world. Brooke isn't entirely clumsy, but she does make some people uncomfortable; and although she's full of good intentions, she's also made mistakes that no one, except Tracy, seems able to forgive.

En ella se cuenta la vida de Tracy (Lola Kirke), una joven solitaria, no muy popular, que va a su primer año a la universidad en una ciudad tan enorme y hermosa como intimidante: Nueva York. La vida de Tracy avanza sin mucho brillo, en medio de la rutina y el tedio de ser una más del montón hasta que conoce a la mujer que está a punto de convertirse en su hermanastra (es la hija del hombre que se casará con su madre) una treintañera soñadora y aventurera llamada Brooke (Greta Gerwig). Para Tracy, mucho más joven y menos experimentada, Brooke es una fuerza natural, una mujer ambiciosa, decidida, que viste bien y se atreve a hacer todo lo que a Tracy le da miedo. Eso hace que su pequeña hermanastra la idolatre desde el inicio, pero Tracy también ve en Brooke una mujer herida, confundida, vulnerable, alguien que muchas veces resulta ser demasiado noble e inocente para un mundo tan cruel. If you've ever seen Frances Ha, you'll find Brooke less awkward than Frances, but similar in some ways. Mistress America is also a film that reflects on family, friendship, the past, dreams, the weight of reality, authenticity, and the right of creators (writers especially) to base their fiction on real people. For these themes alone, this film is worth watching and discussing.

Si alguna vez vieron Frances Ha, Brooke les va a resultar menos torpe que Frances, pero similar en algunos aspectos. Mistress America además, es una película que reflexiona sobre la familia, la amistad, el pasado, los sueños, el peso de la realidad, la autenticidad y sobre el derecho que tienen los creadores (escritores sobre todo) de basar sus ficciones en personas reales. Sólo por estos temas, ya vale la pena ver esta cinta y conversarla.

Maggie's Plan (2015)

This is another independent film, more of a comedy and more romantic than the previous one. It features Maggie (Gerwig), a cheerful and kind-hearted teacher who feels ready to be a mother, but not to be married. She wants to be a single mother and is looking for a partner to help her conceive a child, but without the obligation of being involved in her life afterward. In the midst of this search, Maggie begins to grow closer to John (Ethan Hawke), another teacher at the school, specializing in anthropology, who is currently writing a novel and seems to have found in Maggie an inspiration to finish his work. The problem is that John is married to Georgette (Julianne Moore), a very serious Nordic academic, with whom he also has a teenage daughter. The story then unfolds amidst Maggie's doubts, as she's no longer sure she wants to remain single, embark on the adventure of motherhood, or even want to destroy a marriage. Some of the film's dialogue is interesting, and Moore's performance is entertaining. I found John's character a bit tiresome, and Maggie's seemed very similar to Frances from Frances Ha, even more so than Brooke from Mistress America.

Esta es otra película independiente, más comedia y más romántica que la anterior. En ella nos encontramos a Maggie (Gerwig), una profesora alegre y bondadosa que se siente preparada para ser madre, pero no para tener un matrimonio. Quiere ser madre soltera y para ello busca a un socio que la ayude a concebir a su hijo, pero sin la necesidad de formar parte de su vida luego. En medio de esta búsqueda, Maggie comienza a acercarse a John (Ethan Hawke), otro docente de la escuela, especializado en antropología, que ahora se encuentra escribiendo una novela y que parece haber hallado en Maggie una inspiración para terminar su obra. El problema es que John está casado con Georgette (Julianne Moore), una académica nórdica muy seria, con quien además tiene una hija adolescente. La historia sigue entonces entre las dudas de Maggie quien ya no está muy segura de seguir queriendo ser soltera, ni de lanzarse a la aventura de la maternidad y mucho menos de querer destruir un matrimonio. Algunos diálogos de la película son interesantes y la actuación de Moore es entretenida. El personaje de John me cayó algo pesado y el de Maggie se me hizo muy parecido a la Frances de Frances Ha, incluso más parecido que la Brooke de Mistress America.

However, I do feel that Maggie's Plan compensates for those shortcomings with more humor than the previous film, for which the presence of two Saturday Night Live veterans, Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph, is essential. They play a couple who are friends of Maggie's. Directed by Rebecca Miller, and written by her along with Karen Rinaldi, this film is a good opportunity to see Greta Gerwig on screen.

Ahora bien, sí siento que Maggie's Plan compensa esas fallas con algo más de humor que la película anterior, para lo cual resulta imprescindible la presencia de dos históricos de Saturday Night Live, Bill Hader y Maya Rudolph, quienes interpretan a una pareja amiga de Maggie. Dirigida por Rebecca Miller, y escrita por ella junto a Karen Rinaldi, esta película es una buena oportunidad para ver a Greta Gerwig delante de las cámaras.

20th Century Women (2016)

I could have included another film in which Gerwig had a more central role than in this one, but I decided to include 20th Century Women for two reasons. The first is that Greta's role is different from most of the ones I've seen her in; and the second is that this film is one of the most moving I've seen about what it means to be a woman, but seen from the perspective of a male character. The story is set in the late seventies, where we find Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a single mother raised during World War II, who doesn't know the best way to raise and educate Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann), her fifteen-year-old son. The era is strange: the hippie era of the sixties is over, there's an atmosphere of rebellion, a cultural shift that mixes punk with the Vietnam War, and an openness to discussing topics that were previously taboo. Feeling increasingly distant from Jamie, Dorothea seeks help from Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited photographer who rents her house and is dealing with her own personal drama; and from Julie (Elle Fanning), the teenager two years older with whom Jamie is in love. They are joined by William (Billy Crudup), a carpenter who is helping with some repairs to Dorothea's house.

Pude haber incluido alguna otra película en la que Gerwig tuviera un papel más central que en esta, pero si decidí incluir 20th Century Women fue por dos razones. The film centers on Dorothea and her relationship with her son Jamie, but it also serves as a social and historical analysis of the female condition in the United States during the last century. The generational differences between the three women are very illuminating, and Jamie's experience among them also serves as a quest for understanding between men and women. Furthermore, 20th Century Women also functions as an insightful guide to readings on the female condition, as it presents excerpts from different books through the voices of those reading them.

El centro de la película es Dorothea y la relación con su hijo Jamie, pero la cinta sirve como un análisis social e histórico de la condición femenina en los EEUU en el siglo pasado. Las diferencias generacionales entre las tres mujeres son muy iluminadoras y la experiencia de Jamie en medio de ellas también sirve como la búsqueda de un entendimiento, de comprensión entre hombres y mujeres. Además, 20th Century Women funciona también como una acertada guía de lecturas sobre la condición femenina, ya que muestra extractos de diferentes libros a través de las voces que los leen.

Greta Gerwig

Written and directed by Mike Mills, 20th Century Women is one of the best films about women you can see and probably the best one ever made by a man. As for Greta, her role as Abbie is more dramatic than some of her other characters. Abbie is critical, analytical, rebellious, non-violent, but firm in her convictions, and she's not the clumsy, somewhat naive blonde we see in the other two films mentioned in this post, but rather a young woman with short red hair who listens to punk. If you want to see more of Gerwig's filmography as an actress, you might be surprised to discover that she has a film with Al Pacino (The Humbling) or that she has shared credits with names like Helen Mirren, Woody Allen, and Natalie Portman. But if you don't want to watch all these films because none of them appeal to you, then watch just one: Frances Ha. Not only is, in my opinion, Gerwig's best performance, but it's also one of the best films I've ever seen, beautifully shot in black and white, very well directed by Noah Baumbach, and featuring a then relatively unknown Adam Driver. The reason I didn't include Frances Ha in this post is because it's so good and I like her so much that I'd like to write a post dedicated exclusively to it. Escrita y dirigida por Mike Mills, 20th Century Women es una de las mejores películas sobre mujeres que pueden verse y probablemente la mejor que haya hecho un hombre. En cuanto a Greta, su papel de Abbie es más dramático que otros de sus personajes. Abbie es crítica, analítica, rebelde, no violenta, pero sí firme en sus convicciones y no es la rubia torpe y algo ingenua que vemos en las otras dos películas mencionadas en este post, sino una joven de cabello rojo y corto que escucha punk. Si quieren ver algo más de la filmografía de Gerwig como actriz, les puede sorprender descubrir que tiene una película con Al Pacino (The Humbling) o saber que ha compartido créditos con nombres como Helen Mirren, Woody Allen y Natalie Portman. Pero si no quieren ver todas estas películas porque ninguna los convence, entonces vean una sola: Frances Ha. No sólo es, en mi opinión, la mejor actuación de Gerwig, sino una de las mejores películas que he visto jamás, hermosamente filmada en blanco y negro, muy bien dirigida por Noah Baumbach y en donde aparece un para entonces poco conocido Adam Driver. Si no incluí Frances Ha en este post fue porque es tan buena y me gusta tanto que me gustaría subir un post para hablar exclusivamente de ella.
