During the month of May, I attended a film series at the Catholic University's Extension Center in Santiago, Chile. The series was called Stories of German Migration and, as indicated, it featured films made in Germany that—from different perspectives and in different styles—addressed the topic of migration. At the time, I reviewed only one of the films I saw, Almanya (here's the link to the post), but I also attended five other screenings, and today I want to tell you a little about three of those films.

Si revisan cualquier top o lista de las mejores trilogías de la historia del cine van a encontrar siempre los mismos indiscutibles títulos: The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, Batman (la de Nolan, obvio), The Dollar Trilogy, las películas originales de Star Wars y en algunos casos algunos más atrevidos incluirán Matrix y Spider-man (las de Tobey McGuire). Pero dentro de todas esas películas de fantasía y acción, siempre va a aparecer una única trilogía romántica y real que ha dado mucho de que hablar durante los últimos treinta años. Se trata de la Trilogía Before del director Richard Linklater, protagonizada por Ethan Hawke y Julie Delpy; y hoy les quiero hablar de ella.

Before Sunrise (1995)

Based on the novel by Judith Kerr, Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl, directed by Caroline Link, tells a story set in Nazi Germany. Anna, the protagonist of our story, is nine years old and lives with her family in 1930s Berlin. When Nazism rises to power, her quiet and loving life is shaken by a simple but decisive fact: her family is Jewish. Coming from the Jewish community, the Kempers, knowing their lives are in danger, decide to leave the country. Anna is then torn from her home and forced to flee to Switzerland, Paris, and finally London, becoming migrants, strangers, and having to start their lives over and over again, learning a new language, new customs, and above all, trying to grow while losing hope of returning home. The film is not as violent as other stories of the time, and the fate of the Kemper family is not as dramatic as that of other families in similar films—although leaving the country of their birth is dramatic enough in itself—but what makes this story endearing is Anna's tender, naive, and often wise perspective. She doesn't understand the political mechanisms of the time, she doesn't know much about the war or what might be brewing in the offices of world leaders, but her immediate reality reflects to her the unfortunate nature of her fate. Only the love of her parents will sustain her through the most difficult moments of her childhood.

Aquí comenzó todo. Céline (Julie Delpy) es una estudiante francesa que va de regreso a París a bordo de un tren. En ese mismo vagón viaja Jesse (Ethan Hawke), un joven norteamericano que va de camino a Viena en donde debe tomar un vuelo para volver a casa. La discusión de otra pareja es la excusa para que los ojos de nuestros protagonistas se conozcan y comiencen a conversar de un montón de cosas. Podría decirse que en Before Sunrise no hay trama. No hay un conflicto mayor, un nudo, un desenlace, un antagonista, nada de esas cosas. La película es una conversación que dura toda una noche, pues al llegar a Viena, Jesse invita a Céline que se baje con él y que recorran la ciudad hasta la mañana siguiente en la que él debe tomar su vuelo. Y ella lo hace. Pocas veces he visto una conversación más natural, espontánea y verosímil. Desde que vi esta película por primera vez - y la he visto unas seis o siete veces más - me he enfrentado a la opinión de un montón de personas que dicen que estas cosas no pasan, que la gente no habla de esas cosas con alguien a quien acaba de conocer. No estoy de acuerdo. Estas cosas pasan. A mí me han pasado. No en Viena, porque no he tenido la oportunidad de ir a Europa, pero sí he conocido personas en contextos similares y hemos tenido conversaciones personales y profundas sobre esos temas. La vida, la muerte, el sexo, el compromiso social, la superstición, la divinidad, y por supuesto, el amor, son algunos de los temas que Céline y Jesse conversan a lo largo de una mágica noche en la que vemos nacer y crecer una conexión con la que la mayoría de las personas sólo soñamos.

I haven't had the chance to read Judith Kerr's young adult novel, but I'm confident that Anna will have the same charm on paper as she does on screen. I think Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl is a good way to talk to young people about heavy topics like war, politics, and migration, without the experience being as traumatic as The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas or La vita è bella.

De un éxito modesto en la taquilla a convertirse en película de culto y una de las historias de amor más recordadas por todos, Before Sunrise ha logrado permanecer vigente por un montón de razones, pero la principal es que los seres humanos aún creemos en el amor, tanto así que actualmente existe la posibilidad de hacer un tour en Viena que recorre los mismos lugares que Jesse y Céline visitaron la noche del 16 de Junio de 1994, ¿no sería increíble caminar detrás de sus huellas?

I knew about Judith Kerr's story before seeing the previous film, but I hadn't heard anything about Toubab, so I didn't know what to expect. The film opens with Babtou being released from prison and hoping for a new beginning. Babtou is a twenty-five-year-old boy of Senegalese origin, but born and raised in Germany, whose best friend is Dennis, a German boy who is both strange and sweet. Reunited when Babtou is released from prison, the boys' hopes fade when, shortly after, at what is supposed to be Babtou's welcome-back-to-freedom party, a police raid ends with a new arrest and a painful sentence: Babtou will be deported to Senegal, his country of origin. Desperate to avoid being uprooted from the country he calls home, Babtou seeks to marry one of the girls he's dated in recent years, but—due to his previous treatment of them—they all reject him. With no other alternatives and taking advantage of the inclusiveness of German law, Babtou and Dennis devise a plan as crazy as it is risky: to marry each other. If your straight best friend isn't willing to marry you to avoid deportation, then he's not your best friend. This decision leads to a series of misunderstandings, confusion, and hilarious moments that don't obscure the dramatic undertones of the story. Both Farba Dieng, as Babtou, and Julius Nitschkoff, as Dennis, shine in what is, to date, the only film by director Florian Dietrich.

Durante nueve años tuvimos que esperar para saber si Jesse y Céline se habían reencontrado, o no, como lo habían prometido, hasta que Linklater estrenó Before Sunset. Otra capital europea, París, es el escenario de este segundo capítulo que, al igual que el primero, no tiene mayor trama. Es nuevamente una larga conversación sobre mil y un cosas, pero sobre todo sobre dos personas que se han extrañado lo indecible - no habían vuelto a verse desde los acontecido en la primera película - y que ahora se han reencontrado. Jesse está en París promocionando su primera novela, escrita basándose en el recuerdo de aquella noche en Viena, y Céline va a verlo en la librería en donde está firmando ejemplares. Con el tiempo nuevamente limitado por el horario de un avión que Jesse debe abordar para volver a Nueva York, caminan por las calles de París contándose qué han hecho durante estos nueve años. Un café, un parque, un bote que cruza el Sena, un taxi, pero sobre todo las calles de París son el telón de fondo para que nuestros protagonistas hablen y nos hagan pensar en el paso del tiempo, la modernidad, el arte, la guerra, los arrepentimientos y las segundas oportunidades, entre muchas otras cosas. El éxito de esta segunda película - y de la tercera - es que mantiene la esencia de los personajes y eso se debe en gran medida a que Linklater escribió el guion conjuntamente con Delpy y Hawke logrando que se mantuviera la frescura de la historia original mientras se profundizaba en ambos personajes.

Despite being a comedy, Toubab poses a serious questioning of certain aspects of German society and its immigration policies. Babtou was born in Germany, has lived there for over twenty years, speaks German, and yet he's not German because he doesn't have German citizenship. Instead, according to his country of origin, he's Senegalese, which seems quite unfair and somewhat absurd. If being born, growing up, and living your entire life in a country doesn't make you worthy of citizenship, then what does? Reflecting on this through crazy, absurd, and funny situations is one of the reasons why I recommend watching Toubab.

Before Sunrise culmina haciendo un recorrido por los lugares, ahora vacíos, por donde caminaron Céline y Jesse. Como en un juego de espejos, Before Sunset inicia con un recorrido por los lugares que ellos visitarán luego en la película. Este y otros detalles del guion, de los personajes y sus gestos hacen que esta segunda película se sienta a la vez parte de la misma historia, sin sentirse una repetición. Eso, creo yo, es clave en el éxito de la historia.

Before Midnight (2013)

Something curious happened to me with this film. I went to the screening expecting to discover a new story, but some scenes gave me a strong sense of deja vu, and when I reached the final sequence, I knew I'd seen it. I didn't remember where, how, or when, but I'd already seen it. However, with the exception of that last scene, the only one I consciously remembered, the film surprised me with plot twists that seemed new to me every time. Aus dem Nichts begins with Katja, a German woman married to Nuri Sekerci, with whom she has a young son, Rocco. Nuri is of Kurdish descent, and although he was imprisoned for drug trafficking, he studied business administration in prison and, upon his release, began working in a translation and tax office. In many ways, Nuri is an example of social reintegration and rehabilitation, and Katja and Rocco have a lot to do with that. For that reason, when, following an explosion at the office, Katja loses the man she loves and her son, grief and injustice gradually give way to a desire for revenge, as Katja is convinced it was no coincidence. Her husband's Kurdish origins were the reason why xenophobic and extremist sectors of German society executed him. Katja is not a woman of action, but her determination will lead her down increasingly dangerous paths. Will she have what it takes to demand her revenge?

Voy a ser honesto: esta no me la esperaba. El final ambiguo de la primera película me dejó pidiendo más y el cierre de la segunda entrega, aunque igualmente ambiguo, parecía más encaminado a una unión definitiva. No sospechaba entonces que podría ver, nueve años más tarde, lo que había ocurrido con estos amantes. Convertidos ahora en pareja y padres de dos hermosas mellizas, Céline y Jesse no se ven como los veinteañeros que se conocieron en Viena casi veinte años antes. Sin embargo, mucho de su espíritu, de su esencia, ha logrado sobrevivir al paso del tiempo y acaso agudizarse con la madurez. En las primeras dos películas, con algunas breves excepciones, la conversación está monopolizada por los protagonistas, pero en Before Midnight hay una intervención importante de los personajes secundarios que participan de las conversaciones sobre el matrimonio, la paternidad, las relaciones en la madurez, la vejez, el duelo, la viudez, la literatura y el amor. La escena de la comida en casa de Patrick es muy simbólica porque, en una misma mesa, podemos ver el pasado, el presente y el futuro de Céline y Jesse, reflejados en otras parejas que comparten el pan con ellos. La intervención de estos otros personajes le otorga dinamismo a una película que no deja de lado la ya clásica caminata de nuestros amantes por alguna calle europea, griega esta vez. Por otro lado, muchos consideran que esta es la película más real de las tres porque se ve el desgaste de la relación; ya no son los jóvenes ilusionados con la posibilidad, sino los adultos desencantados con la realidad. Sin embargo, y esta es una gran lección, el amor siempre encuentra el camino.

Blending drama with thriller, xenophobia, and migration, with the talent of Diane Kruger, who won an award at Cannes for this role, and impeccable direction by Fatih Akin, Aus dem Nichts reflects the least pleasant side of a society that, despite its history, its past, its evolution, and being considered advanced in many ways, has sectors with purist, radical, and highly dangerous values, not only for Germany but for the entire world. After seeing this film, I decided two things: I had to review more of Faith Akin's filmography, and I had to take advantage of the last screenings of the film series at the UC. In addition to these three and the aforementioned Almanya, I also saw Es gilt das gesprochene Wort, a romance of convenience, and Transit by Christian Petzold, an interesting counterfactual story starring a luxury couple: Franz Rogowski and Paula Beer. One of the things I liked most about this series was that, although it had a central theme—migration—and a German origin story, there were different styles and approaches. Drama, comedy, thriller, family films, in which Germans were sometimes the persecuted, other times the persecutors, but where the migratory status and the questioning of the identity of those of us with a multicultural origin were always at the center: Are we from where we are born? Do we belong to the land of our parents and ancestors? What is our home, where we were born or where we live now? And you, have you seen any of these films? I'll read you in the comments.

Julie Delpy & Ethgan Hawke

La trilogía es una buena síntesis de lo que es el amor. El amor es ilusión, esperanza y desafío. Amar es para valientes. En alguna parte leí que Before Sunrise hablaba de lo que podría haber sido; Before Sunset habla sobre lo que podría ser; y Before Midnight habla sobre lo que es. Me parece bastante acertado, pero también simplista porque la historia es mucho más que eso. Si son de las personas que no disfrutan las tomas continuas o los diálogos largos en las películas, no se molesten. Lo mismo va para quienes necesitan tener una trama, plot twists y un conflicto central. En ese sentido, estas películas de Richard Linklater se parecen más a la vida que al cine, ¿a quién se las recomendaría? a los románticos, lógicamente; a quienes creen en el amor, a aquellos que disfrutan una buena conversación frente a una taza de café, a los que les gusta caminar, a los que aun recuerdan la canción favorita de su crush de primaria, a los que tienen miedo de hablarle a una chica en un bus pero aún así se acercan y le hablan, a los que se arrepienten de no haber aprovechado una oportunidad, a los que creen en las conexiones que surgen de forma imprevista en medio de la cotidianidad, pero también a quienes no creen en ellas porque les aseguro que estas cosas suceden, a los soñadores, pero también a los más realistas... vaya para ustedes esta historia en tres entregas y estos personajes tan entrañables como inmortales, ¿cuántos de ustedes han visto estas películas? ¿cuál es su favorita?
