Even if the name McKenna Grace doesn't ring a bell, I'm sure her face is familiar because this young actress has participated in more than fifty film and television projects, often playing the younger version of the main character (as she did in I, Tonya or Captain Marvel). However, the talented little girl of a decade ago has grown into a young actress who promises to fill movie theaters in the years to come with great performances. Today I bring you a sample of what she is capable of.

Gifted (2017)
This is probably one of McKenna's best-known films, and most of you have likely seen it, not only because it came out almost ten years ago but also because she stars alongside big names like Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer. Gifted tells the story of Frank Adler (Chris) and his niece Mary (Mckenna), whom he has been caring for since she was six months old, after her sister and the girl's mother took her own life. They live together in a small Florida town, and their lives are turned upside down when, on her first day of school, Mary displays great mathematical abilities, unimaginable even to older students, triggering a series of events that will shape the film's plot. First, there's the surprise of her teacher, who seeks to speak with Frank and tell him that Mary is a child prodigy and that perhaps he should enroll her in a school for gifted children. Frank is reluctant to do this for two reasons: first, because his sister was a mathematical genius, and given her fate, he thinks Mary might be better off pursuing something else; and second, because he believes his sister would have wanted the girl to have a normal childhood. The problem is that the girl's grandmother questions this decision and wants Mary to continue her mother's interrupted legacy, which is why she begins a custody battle. What would be best for Mary? To have a normal childhood or to cultivate the special gift she has inherited from her mother?
Esta probablemente sea una de las películas más conocidas de Mckenna y seguramente la mayoría de ustedes la ha visto, no sólo porque salió hace casi diez años sino porque actúa junto a grandes figuras como Chris Evans y Octavia Spencer. Gifted cuenta la historia de Frank Adler (Chris) y su sobrina Mary (Mckenna), a quien debe cuidar desde los seis meses de edad, luego de que su hermana y madre de la niña se quitara la vida. Ambos viven juntos en un pequeño pueblo de Florida y su vida da un vuelco cuando, en el primer día de escuela, Mary muestra habilidades matemáticas impensadas incluso para estudiantes más grandes, lo que desencadena una serie de acontecimientos que irán forjando la trama de la cinta. Directed by Mark Webb, this is probably his second-best film, after (500) Days of Summer. It's a family story that blends drama, comedy, childhood, and parenthood, with emotional scenes, intense dialogue, and memorable moments. While it's true that it's somewhat predictable overall, it compensates with excellent performances, including that of McKenna, who was only ten years old at the time and won a few awards for her role.
Dirigida por Mark Webb, esta probablemente sea su segunda mejor película, después de (500) Days of Summer, y se trata de una historia familiar que mezcla drama, comedia, infancia y paternidad, con escenas emotivas, diálogos cargados de intensidad y momentos memorables. Es cierto que en conjunto resulta un poco predecible, pero lo compensa con muy buenas actuaciones, incluida la de Mckenna quien para entonces apenas tenía diez años y logró ganar algunos premios por su papel.
What We Hide (2025)
Released this year, What We Hide went somewhat unnoticed, and although the film has some flaws, I'm including it here because it showcases other talents of Mckenna Grace. The film opens with two sisters, ten-year-old Jessie (Jojo Regina) and fifteen-year-old Spider (Grace), who from the very first scene must cope with a tragedy: the death of their mother. The way the film simultaneously reveals and conceals the sequence of the girls finding their mother's body at home, a victim of drug abuse, is brutal. From the very first scene, the drama unfolds on screen. There is no father figure or older brothers in the home; the girls are orphans, and therefore the state's foster care system must take them in. The problem is that if they allow this to happen, they will most likely be adopted by different families, and Spider doesn't want them separated. For this reason, the girls hide their mother's body and try to carry on with their lives without raising suspicion. How long can they keep the secret? The task is not easy, as there are too many threats surrounding them: a social services officer who makes regular visits to the house trying to speak with the mother; the town sheriff, who is the father of Spider's best friend and also a former classmate of the girls' mother; And Reece, the woman's latest partner, a violent drug addict and dealer who is still searching for her... who among all these people will discover the truth first? Will the girls be able to escape this situation?
Estrenada este año, What We Hide pasó un poco por debajo de la mesa y aunque la película tiene algunos defectos, la incluyo aquí porque muestra otras habilidades de Mckenna Grace. La cinta inicia con dos hermanas, Jessie de diez (Jojo Regina) y Spider de 15 (Grace) que desde la primera escena deben lidiar con una tragedia: la muerte de su madre. Es brutal la forma en que la película muestra a la vez que esconde la secuencia de cómo las niñas encuentran en casa el cuerpo de su madre, quien ha sucumbido ante el abuso de drogas. Desde la primera escena, el drama se instala en la pantalla. En el hogar no hay figura paterna ni hermanos mayores; las niñas han quedado huérfanas y por tanto el sistema de acogida del estado debe hacerse cargo de ellas. El problema es que si permiten que eso suceda, lo más probable es que sean adoptadas por familias distintas y Spider no quiere que las separen. Por esa razón, las niñas ocultan el cuerpo de su madre e intentan seguir con su vida sin levantar sospechas, ¿cuánto tiempo podrán mantener el secreto? La tarea no resulta fácil, ya que hay demasiadas amenazas alrededor: una oficial de servicios sociales que hace visitas regulares a la casa buscando hablar con la madre; el sheriff de la ciudad que es padre de la mejor amiga de Spider y además ex compañero de clases de la madre de las niñas; y Reece, la última pareja de la mujer quien es un violento drogadicto y traficante que la sigue buscando... ¿quién de todas estas personas descubrirá primero la verdad? ¿podrán las niñas librarse de esta situación?
What We Hide is an uneven thriller, with plot holes and editing that leaves much to be desired. However, it serves to introduce Jojo Regina (who reminded me of a young Abigail Breslin) and to showcase the talent of McKenna Grace, who in this film must become a mother to her sister and, to do so, must face emotionally and physically demanding scenes, in addition to appearing much more serious and sad (and darker-haired) than in some of her other roles. It's not a film I particularly enjoyed, but I did like McKenna's performance.
What We Hide es un thriller irregular, con huecos en la trama y un trabajo de edición que deja mucho que desear. Sin embargo, sirve para introducir a Jojo Regina (quien me recordó a una joven Abigail Breslin) y para dar cuenta del talento de Mckenna Grace que en esta cinta debe convertirse en madre de su hermana y para ello debe afrontar secuencias exigentes desde lo emocional y lo físico, además de lucir mucho más seria y triste (y morena) que en otros de sus papeles. No es una película que me haya gustado mucho, pero sí me gustó la actuación de Mckenna.
Regretting You (2025)
You've probably heard about this one. Based on the novel by Colleen Hoover (also the author of It Ends With Us and Verity), Regretting You is currently playing in theaters worldwide and has grossed over fifty million dollars, a good portion of which it earned last Halloween weekend, surpassing all other horror films. The film tells the story of two generations. First, there are the two couples: Chris and Morgan; Jonah and Jenny, four friends who eventually married and started two families. Then there's young Elijah, the son of the latter couple, and Clara (Mckenna Grace), the teenage daughter of the former, who starts dating Miller, the coolest guy in school whose reputation is tarnished by his drug-dealing father, even though he now lives only with his grandfather. But things get even more complicated when a fatal accident brings to light a painful yet revealing truth, shattering the image of perfection of both families. Screenwriter Susan McMartin has experience adapting young adult novels (such as After by Anna Todd). The same goes for director Josh Boone, who, in addition to adapting Stephen King's The Stand into a miniseries, also made the films The New Mutants (a wasted cast) and The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, an emotional young adult romance novel that started the whole market that came after for this type of story, so I don't want to hold them solely responsible for the result of Regretting You.
De esta película, sí deben haber escuchado algo. Basada en la novela de Colleen Hoover (autora también de It Ends With Us y Verity), Regretting You se encuentra actualmente en las carteleras de cine de todo el mundo y lleva recaudados más de cincuenta millones de dólares, buena parte de los cuales los obtuvo el pasado fin de semana de Halloween superando todas las películas de terror disponibles. En el film, se cuenta la historia de dos generaciones. Primero están las dos parejas, Chris y Morgan; Jonah y Jenny, cuatro amigos que con el tiempo terminaron casándose y formando dos familias. Luego tenemos al pequeño Elijah, hijo de los segundos y a Clara (Mckenna Grace), la hija adolescente de los primeros, quien comienza a salir con Miller, el chico más cool de la escuela cuya reputación se ve empañada por la de su padre narcotraficante a pesar de que ahora sólo vive con su abuelo. Pero las cosas se complican aún más cuando un fatal accidente saca a la luz una verdad tan dolorosa como reveladora y la imagen de perfección de ambas familias se hace pedazos. Because if the story of this film is forced, implausible and in some cases nonsensical, I think it's due to the original work. The film's technical aspects are acceptable for this type of story, but the story itself ends up being somewhat disappointing, even though there are some scenes that look good and help sell it on social media. That scene where Clara runs towards Miller and jumps on him, for example, is lovely to watch, but there are few moments like that. Furthermore, although it has good actors, neither Dave Franco nor Allison Williams strike me as very convincing as parents, and not just because of their youth. Could it be because of the characters they play? I'm inclined to think so because I've seen Franco before, and I really liked Williams in Get Out.
Porque si la historia de esta película es forzada, poco creíble, muy novelera y en algunos casos carece de sentido, creo que se debe a la obra original. Los aspectos técnicos de la cinta son aceptables para este tipo de historias, pero la historia en sí misma termina siendo un poco decepcionante por más que hayan algunas escenas que se vean bien y que ayuden a venderla en redes sociales. Esa escena en la que Clara corre hacia Miller y le salta encima, por ejemplo, es linda de ver, pero hay pocos momentos así. Además, aunque tiene buenos actores, ni Dave Franco ni Allison Williams me resultan muy convincentes como padres y no sólo por su juventud, ¿será por culpa de los personajes que interpretan? Me inclino a pensar eso porque a Franco lo he visto antes y Williams me gustó mucho en Get Out.
However, Mckenna Grace, who is our subject today, does strike me as believable and capable as Clara, and not only because she's motivated by acting alongside her current partner (Mason Thames), but also because she's a skilled actress. Furthermore, it's worth noting that despite her youth, she's credited as one of the film's producers, and if we add to that the fact that she's even directed some of her own music videos (Oh yes, because she sings too!), I think we've found someone who doesn't want to be just another pretty face on the big screen. You can see more of her in series like The Haunting of Hill House or The Handmaid's Tale, and keep an eye out for the coming months when she'll be starring in horror films like Scream 7 and Five Nights at Freddy's 2, dramas like Anniversary, and the highly anticipated young adult fantasy The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (which will feature actors like Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close, and Maya Hawke). But what I'd really like to see is her in more serious projects, with directors and screenwriters who can bring out her talent and take her to a new professional level. I think she needs to move away from these best-selling adaptations and choose her projects more carefully (most of the films she's been in have been mediocre, despite her excellent acting). Sin embargo, Mckenna Grace, que es quien nos convoca hoy, sí me parece creíble y cumplidora como Clara y no sólo por la motivación de actuar junto a su actual pareja (Mason Thames) sino que la chica sabe hacer sus cosas. Además, otro dato no menor es que a pesar de su juventud, aparece en los créditos de la película como una de las productoras y si a eso le sumamos que se ha atrevido a dirigir algunos de sus videos musicales (¡Ah, sí, porque la chica también canta!) creo que encontramos a alguien que no quiere esperar a ser solamente otra cara bonita en la gran pantalla. Pueden ver más de ella en series como The Haunting of Hill House o The Handmaid's Tale y estar atentos a los próximos meses en donde estrenará cintas de terror como Scream 7 y Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, dramas como Anniversary y la esperada fantasía juvenil The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (en donde actuarán figuras como Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close y Maya Hawke), pero lo que a mí me gustaría es verla en proyectos más serios, con directores y guionistas que puedan explotar su talento y llevarla a un nuevo nivel profesional; creo que debe salirse un poco de estas adaptaciones de bestsellers y escoger mejor sus proyectos (la mayoría de las películas en las que ha participado han sido mediocres, a pesar de su excelente actuación). Solo he visto la primera película y me encanta ella de niña, no la he visto de grande, pero me llamo la atención la tercera a pesar de lo que comentaste, para pasar el rato parece perfecta.
