Hay canciones que no recordamos hasta que vuelve a sonar. Con las caricaturas me pasa algo parecido y no porque solo sean un dibujo creo que va más al clima que deja. Últimamente me he encontrado pensando en los clásicos como si fueran personas de verdad. Saben, extrañar, recordar aquello que te hacía reír, sentir la necesidad de ver y saber que todo está bien. Y es que ahorita, con la suma de carga que llevamos en casa con la situación actual de la ciudad más país, solo queremos ser niños y vivir nuevamente en un mundo donde jugar y ser feliz era el combustible de nuestros días ja ja ja…

There are songs we don’t remember until we hear them again. I feel something similar with cartoons, and it’s not just because they’re drawings I think it has more to do with the atmosphere they create. Lately, I’ve found myself thinking about the classics as if they were real people. You know, missing them, remembering what made you laugh, feeling the need to see them and know that everything is okay. And the thing is, right now, with the added burden we’re carrying at home due to the current situation in the city and the country, we just want to be kids again and live in a world where playing and being happy fueled our days, ha ha ha…

Es lo divertido de ser niño y créanme, hacer este tipo de post me ayuda no solo a recordar sino, a liberar todo el peso pues les confieso que me divierto muchísimo volver a ver estas caricaturas con Luna. Ah bueno, se me pasó, Cumaná, la ciudad de Venezuela donde vivo tiene hoy 29 dias sin agua por un derrumbe que ocasionó el colapso de una tubería madre que lleva el agua desde el Turimiquire a toda una población. Y bueno, sumándole todo lo demás del país queremos es correr Doris y yo ja ja ja… Ver esto es como una dopamina para el cuerpo ja ja ja…

That’s the fun part of being a kid, and believe me, writing this kind of post helps me not only to remember but also to let go of all that weight because I have to admit, I have a blast watching these cartoons again with Luna. Oh, right, I almost forgot Cumaná, the city in Venezuela where I live, has been without water for 29 days now because of a landslide that caused a main water pipe to collapse. That pipe carries water from the Turimiquire River to the entire town. And well, when you add that to everything else going on in the country, Doris and I just want to run away, ha ha ha… Seeing this is like a dopamine rush for the body, ha ha ha…

Seguimos con lo que vinimos, sinceramente pensaba que Luna se iba a aburrir con lo clásico y bueno, obviamente lo moderno con sus colores más limpios y sus historias más “seguras” es lo que los niños de hoy están acostumbrados a ver pero lo que he visto es lo contrario. A Luna los clásicos la han atrapado, aunque puedo notar que en momentos se siente aburrida, siempre llega algo que le reanima el humor y empieza a reír y es que, mientras ese humor de persecución, de golpes rápidos o de trampas creativas, ella mira todo con una sonrisa en su rostro cosa que bueno, quizás en ocasiones haya alguna nueva serie de la nueva era que la haga reír porqué sé que le gusta Peppa y puede también pasar un día entero viéndola.

We stuck to what we came for. Honestly, I thought Luna was going to get bored with the classics. Obviously, modern cartoons with their cleaner colors and more “safe” stories are what kids today are used to watching, but what I’ve seen is the opposite. Luna has been captivated by the classics; although I can tell she gets bored at times, something always comes along to lift her spirits, and she starts laughing. The thing is, while that humor with its chases, quick punches, or creative tricks she watches it all with a smile on her face which, well, maybe sometimes there’s a new series from the modern era that makes her laugh, because I know she likes Peppa and can spend an entire day watching it.

Este pasado Domingo fue le turno de tres caricaturas que veía muchísimo y bueno, creo que estas son más viejas que clásicos ja ja ja… ¿Se acuerdan de Droopy, Tom y Jerry y de Speedy Gonzales? Estos fueron los personajes que disfrutó Luna conmigo o tal vez Yo con ella ja ja ja… Por lo menos no dice que no le gusta ja ja ja… Hoy me toca volver a ellos, a un Droopy que remata con una calma que parece hechizo, con un Tom y Jerry en ese caos en modo broma y Speedy Gonzales que entra como si todo fuera a terminar en una carrera imposible.

This past Sunday, it was the turn of three cartoons I used to watch all the time, and well, I think these are older than classics, ha ha ha… Do you remember Droopy, Tom and Jerry, and Speedy Gonzales? These were the characters Luna enjoyed with me or maybe I enjoyed with her, ha ha ha… At least she doesn’t say she doesn’t like them, ha ha ha… Today I’m going back to them: a Droopy who finishes with a calmness that seems like a spell, a Tom and Jerry in that chaotic, playful mode, and Speedy Gonzales who bursts in as if everything were going to end in an impossible race.

Droopy, en cambio, fue el que terminó ganándose un lugar especial en la sala desde el primer capítulo. No sé si fue su manera lenta de moverse, esa carita de “nada me sorprende” o la forma en que su voz parece decir las cosas como si ya las hubiera pensado mil veces antes de pronunciarlas. A Luna le encantó el contraste: el resto corre, grita, se mete en líos… pero Droopy mira todo como si el caos fuera solo ruido de fondo.

Droopy, on the other hand, was the one who ended up winning a special place in the living room right from the first episode. I don’t know if it was his slow way of moving, that “nothing surprises me” look on his face, or the way his voice seems to say things as if he’d already thought them through a thousand times before speaking. Luna loved the contrast: everyone else runs, screams, gets into trouble… but Droopy watches it all as if the chaos were just background noise.

Sigo analizando si estoy haciendo mal dejando a Luna ver estos dibujos animados pero creo que Droopy con su calma absurda a Speedy con su energía imposible y Tom y Jerry con sus tropiezos eternos, no solo hacen reír nos enseñan que el mundo de la animación puede ser rápido, torpe, inteligente y ridículo al mismo tiempo. Y a Luna eso no le parece peligroso, le parece un juego porque entiende que son solo dibujos creados para divertir y hacer felices a aquellos que los ven. Yo no puedo ver Peppa entonces eso no me hace feliz a mí ja ja ja…

I’m still trying to figure out if I’m doing the wrong thing by letting Luna watch these cartoons, but I think that Droopy, with his absurd calm; Speedy, with his boundless energy; and Tom and Jerry, with their endless mishaps they don’t just make us laugh; they teach us that the world of animation can be fast-paced, clumsy, clever, and ridiculous all at the same time. And to Luna, that doesn’t seem dangerous; it seems like a game because she understands that they’re just cartoons created to entertain and make those who watch them happy. I can’t watch Peppa, so that doesn’t make me happy, ha ha ha…
