¡Hola amigos! Hoy les vengo a compartir mi reseña acerca de una película de comedia basada en otra de origen francés. Les estoy hablando de Las damas primero.

Hi, everyone! Today I’m here to share my review of a comedy film based on a French original. I’m talking about Ladies First.

Trama - Plot

La historia gira en torno a un hombre de negocios que es considerado machista y que un día, tras un golpe que lo deja inconsciente, se despierta en un mundo al revés, totalmente dirigido por mujeres. Ahí experimentará su peor pesadilla y recibirá los mismos comentarios y actitudes que él mismo le demostró a las mujeres. Ahora deberá enfrentarse a las mismas injusticias buscando la manera de salir bien parado mientras intenta revertir su situación actual.

The story revolves around a businessman who is considered sexist and who, one day, after being knocked unconscious, wakes up in a world turned upside down, one completely run by women. There, he will experience his worst nightmare and face the same comments and attitudes that he himself directed at women. Now he must confront those same injustices while finding a way to come out on top as he tries to reverse his current situation.

Es una película que al principio me indignó mucho por todo el tema claramente patriarcal que querían mostrar de entrada, eso me hacía enfurecer, pero luego me dio algo de vergüenza ajena. No sé si disfrute de verla, se sintió algo incómoda por momentos. Se supone que es una comedia absurda que te hace reír de lo ridícula que es y sí lo logró en algunas ocasiones, pero se me hizo muy absurda y surrealista en algunas partes. Aunque sé que son situaciones llevadas al extremo que también retratan una realidad que todavía se vive, por desgracia.

It’s a movie that really upset me at first because of the clearly patriarchal theme they wanted to showcase right from the start—that made me furious—but then I felt a bit of secondhand embarrassment. I’m not sure if I enjoyed watching it; it felt a bit uncomfortable at times. It’s supposed to be an absurd comedy that makes you laugh at how ridiculous it is, and it did manage to do that on some occasions, but I found it very absurd and surreal in some parts. Although I know these are situations taken to the extreme that also portray a reality that, unfortunately, is still being lived today.

Me llamaba la atención verla por la actriz Rosamund Pike porque ella me agrada, no sabía muy bien con lo que me iba a encontrar, pero a veces me gusta descubrirlo sobre la marcha y sorprenderme. Por momentos la película cobraba intensidad y se volvía interesante, y luego volvía a decaer. De todos modos, me gustó que se mostrará cómo funcionaria el mundo si las cosas fueran al revés, es super interesante esa parte. Lo que pasa es que quedó como chiste. No es una película para tomarla muy en serio o esa es la sensación que me dejo.

I was drawn to it because of the actress Rosamund Pike—I really like her—and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but sometimes I like to figure things out as I go along and let myself be surprised. At times, the movie picked up intensity and got interesting, and then it would fizzle out again. Anyway, I liked that it showed how the world would work if things were turned upside down—that part is super interesting. The thing is, it ended up feeling like a joke. It’s not a movie to take too seriously, or at least that’s the impression it left on me.

La idea estaba buena, pero fue ejecutada de una manera torpe y al estilo comedia más que nada, eso puede haberle quitado seriedad al asunto. Igual creo que se entiende el punto de querer retratar la realidad aunque sea de esta forma. Las actuaciones estuvieron bien, me gustó él, creo que se lució bastante en su papel, y fue una de las razones por las que la continúe viendo hacia el final. Quería saber cuál sería su próximo movimiento.

The idea was good, but it was executed clumsily and in a comedic style, which may have taken away from the seriousness of the subject matter. Still, I think the point of wanting to portray reality—even in this way—comes across. The acting was good; I liked him—I think he really shone in his role—and that was one of the reasons I kept watching until the end. I wanted to know what his next move would be.

Igual, vuelvo a repetir, fue muy absurdo todo. Creo que me hizo reír de la locura que estaba viendo por momentos y sí, también me incomodo en algunos aspectos. Pero creo que para proporcionarle otra mirada al eje central está okey. Por mí parte siento que pasó sin pena ni gloria, no será una película que quiera volver a ver.

Anyway, I’ll say it again: the whole thing was pretty absurd. I think it made me laugh because of how crazy it was at times, and yes, it also made me uncomfortable in some ways. But I think it’s okay as a way to offer a different perspective on the central theme. As for me, I feel like it came and went without much fanfare; it’s not a movie I’d want to watch again.
