Watching videos on YouTube I found a short film with a scene that caught my attention about the movie Stop-Loss, so I proceeded to look for it to see it. This film has a while since it was released, it is from the year 2008, which was directed by filmmaker Kimberly Peirce, who along with Mark Richard created the script of the production. This movie is of the war drama genre, which deals with the Iraq war and the impact it had on the soldiers. This is one of my favorite genres, so I had high expectations for Absent.

Stop-Loss tells the story of Brandon King, a U.S. Army sergeant who leads a squadron in the war in Iraq. After doing his duty, the soldier decides to return home to be with his family, after combat, to protect his soldiers. When he thought everything was fine, Brandon is forced to return to the war, which triggers a series of situations that can raise endless questions and makes us reflect on the subject. This film clearly shows us the effects of war on soldiers and how this can affect their lives and their loved ones. It also raises the criticism of how these men are forced to fight for their country, while the others stay at a desk, when they see their friends lost in battle.

Viendo videos un YouTube me encontré un corto con una escena que me llamó la atención sobre la película Stop-Loss, así que procedí a buscarla para verla. Este filme tiene un tiempo desde que se estrenó, es del año 2008, que fue dirigida por el cineasta Kimberly Peirce, quien junto a Mark Richard crearon el guion de la producción. Esta película es del género de drama bélico, que trata la guerra de Irak y el impacto que este tuvo en los saldados. Este es uno de mis géneros favoritos, así que tenían las expectativas altas sobre Ausente.

Stop-Loss nos narra la historia de Brandon King, un sargento del ejército de los Estados Unidos que dirige un escuadrón en la guerra en Irak. Luego de cumplir con su deber, el soldado decide volver a casa para estar con su familia, luego de combatir, proteger a sus soldados. Cuando pensó que todo estaba bien, Brandon es obligado a regresar a la guerra, lo cual desencadena una serie de situaciones que nos puede plantear un sin fin de interrogantes, nos pone a reflexionar sobre el tema. Esta película nos muestra claramente las afectaciones que tienen los soldados por la guerra y como esto puede afectar sus vidas y a sus seres queridos. También plantea la crítica de como estos hombres son obligados a combatir por su país, mientras los demás se quedan en un escritorio, cuando ellos ven perder a sus amigos en batalla.

This has always been a controversial topic, what is the end of war, because in the end many lives are lost and these men are emotionally touched by seeing the horrors of being in a war. The objective of this film is to show the loss of autonomy that the soldiers have, the traumas they experience and how they affect their lives, as well as the struggle against the system. The truth is that I must say that the story is quite good in the way it is presented, nothing exceptional, but I think it fulfills its purpose. Something that should be highlighted in this film is the direction by Kimberly Peirce, because this production manages to convey the feelings of the soldiers, the emotions of men who perhaps many times did not show how affected they were, because they were trained for it, but at the end of the day they are human beings.

The script of the film I think was pretty good, there were some confusing moments for me, but overall I think it did a good job in this aspect. The theme is very well thought out and executed, of course it's not perfect, but I think it achieved the purpose of the story. As for the cast, I think it is another point that should be highlighted in the film, where Brandon is played by Ryan Phillippe, an actor that I have seen in several films and the truth is that his work is good, at least it is a personal opinion. We also have Channing Tatum, who plays Steve, a sergeant who is Brandon's friend, both are from Texas. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is another actor I have seen in several films, he plays soldier Tommy, who is also from the locality of the two previous characters, who plays an important role in the story. In addition to Stop-Loss, it also features Rob Brown and Abbie Cornish. A cast to match.

Regarding the cinematography, I can tell you that the work by Chris Menges was very good, because we have scenes with shots that show us the most emotional moments of the film, the emotions that the soldiers live both in the war, as well as when they return home. What I liked is that in the film we also see documentary type scenes to capture the moments of the soldiers in the camp, how they live their lives and how they try to hide what they really feel, the instability that causes them to be in a war and every day having the fear of losing the lives of their comrades, friends, even to think about their own lives and their families. Finally, we have the soundtrack, which was in charge of John Powell, who also did a good job, at the level of the story and photography.

Este siempre ha sido un tema controversial, cuál es el fin de la guerra, pues al final se pierden muchas vidas y estos hombres quedan tocados emocionalmente de ver los horrores que conlleva estar en una guerra. El objetivo de este filme es mostrar la perdida de la autonomía que tienen los soldados, los traumas que viven y como estos afectan sus vidas, además de la lucha contra el sistema. La verdad es que debo decir que la historia está bastante bien en la forma que se plantea, nada excepcional, pero creo que cumple con su cometido. Algo que debe destacar de esta película es la dirección por parte de Kimberly Peirce, pues esta producción logra transmitir los sentimientos de los soldados, las emociones de hombres que tal vez muchas veces no demostraban lo afectados que se encontraban, pues eran entrenados para ello, pero al final y al cabo son seres humanos.

El guion del filme creo que estuvo bastante bien, hubo algunos momentos de confusión para mí, pero en general creo que se hizo un buen trabajo en este aspecto. El tema estoy muy bien planteado y ejecutado, claro que no es perfecta, pero pienso que se logró el cometido de la historia. En cuanto al cast, opino que es otro punto que se debe destacar del filme, donde Brandon es interpretado por Ryan Phillippe, un actor que lo he visto en varios filme y la verdad es que su trabajo es bueno, al menos es una opinión personal. También tenemos a Channing Tatum, quien interpreta a Steve, un sargento quien es amigo de Brandon, ambos son de Texas. Joseph Gordon-Levitt es otro actor que he visto en varias filme, interpreta al soldado Tommy, quien también es de la localidad de los dos anteriores personajes, quien juega un papel importante dentro de la historia. Además que Stop-Loss, también cuenta con la participación de Rob Brown y Abbie Cornish. Un reparto a la altura.

En lo que respecta a la fotografía, les puedo decir que el trabajo por parte de Chris Menges fue muy bueno, pues tenemos escenas con planos que nos muestran los momentos más emotivos del filme, las emociones que viven los soldados tanto en la guerra, como también cuando regresan a casa. Lo que me gusto es que en el filme también vemos escenas tipo documental para plasmar los momentos de los saldados en el campamento, como viven sus vidas y como tratan de ocultar lo que realmente sienten, la inestabilidad que le provoca estar en una guerra y cada día tener el temor de ver perder la vida de sus compañeros, amigos, incluso de pensar en sus propias vidas y sus familiares. Finalmente, tenemos la banda sonora, que estuvo a carga de John Powell, quien también hizo un buen trabajo, al nivel de la historia y la fotografía.

Stop-Loss (2008) is an excellent film, of course it is not perfect, but it has a great story with a good message and things to reflect on the theme of wars and how this affects the people who are killed. A never ending theme, because humanity is always at war and those really affected are the people, the men who believe they fight for their country, but see every day how they end the lives of others, which comes to affect each of them emotionally. Do I recommend it? If you are a lover of war and drama, this is a great option, even if it is your favorite genre, you can still enjoy it.

Stop-Loss (2008) es un excelente filme, claro que no es perfecto, pero cuenta con una gran historia con un buen mensaje y cosas para reflexionar sobre el tema de las guerras y como esto afecta a los saldados. Un tema de nunca acabar, pues la humanidad siempre está en guerra y los realmente afectados son las personas, los hombres que creen luchar por su país, pero ven cada día como acaban con las vidas de otras personas, lo que llega afectar emocionalmente a cada uno de ellos. ¿La recomiendo? Si eres amante del género bélico y drama, esta es una gran opción, incluso si es de tu género favorito, aun así la puedes disfrutar.
