The Pitt has been a highly acclaimed series, receiving extremely positive reviews from many professional critics. The public also seems to like it a lot. I had refused to watch it, but since the second season has just premiered and it has won the latest awards, I wanted to give it a chance. Unfortunately, I couldn't get past the first episode.

Please note: I agree with many critics who say that it is a series with impeccable production values. That's true. It's an HBO product, synonymous with quality; some of the best series on my list have been HBO productions. In this article, I will never say that The Pitt is a bad series. Just because I don't like a production doesn't mean it's bad. The problem is that The Pitt isn't for me.

I was never a fan of hospital-based TV series. If it was a procedural series, I might watch an episode from time to time, but they weren't productions I eagerly awaited week after week. I'm sorry. Those heroic versions of dedicated doctors willing to do the impossible to save lives, mixed with their personal dramas, whether conflicts, romances, dilemmas, etc., never appealed to me. Partly because, coming from where I come from and living in the real hell of hospitals, everything portrayed in those American productions about emergency rooms seems like a utopia to me.

When I looked up who the hell the creator of The Pitt was, I found a screenwriter and producer named R. Scott Gemmill. When I checked out his filmography, I realized why I didn't like The Pitt. That screenwriter was also part of the team behind the famous E.R., but he has also been on Hawaii 5.0, Jag, and NCIS: Los Angeles. All of them are procedural series. Several years ago, I published a post giving my opinion on that style of series, which I didn't find the most appealing. That's why The Pitt, although it maintains a general plot that encompasses the main characters within the emergency room of that hospital, actually presents new emergency cases in each episode.

The appeal of the series, whose first season consists of 15 episodes, is that each episode lasts one hour in apparent real time and features the protagonist, Dr. Robby. Everything is designed to give us the impression that everything is happening in real time, but, of course, there are tricks involved. In the first episode, the protagonist walks through a place and there are cuts, which make him arrive quickly. I perceive the supposed real time to be very contrived.

What shocked and also disgusted me from the first episode is that we are presented with the case of a woman whose nationality is unknown, no one understands her, we don't know what language she speaks, and all the doctors, nurses, etc., don't know what to do. For God's sake! As a viewer, I found it the greatest insult. The damn series is set in the present day. All those doctors and nurses walk around with iPhones, and none of them think to use a simple voice translator. I couldn't stand it, folks. It's not that I'm very demanding, but it's an insult to anyone's intelligence.

But to make matters worse, there's a scene where one of the doctors or nurses, I can't remember who it was, decides to use their cell phone. Damn it. For a moment, I thought, “Ha, the writers just wanted to drag out the case to make it more dramatic,” but no, it turns out she takes out her cell phone not to use the damn translator, but to look up a map of the world so the patient can tell her what country she's from. With this scene, I felt like the writers and the creator of the series were rubbing their balls in my face, telling me I had to swallow everything without complaining.

It has a great cast. Noah Wyle, who was also part of E.R., is excellent, and the awards he's receiving confirm that, but it's a series that will delight lovers of emergency room dramas. And here I get off the bus. I'm not going to waste 15 hours of my life watching the entire first season, let alone the second. It's the kind of series that works, it's good, but I'm crossing it off my viewing list.

En parte porque, siendo de donde soy y viviendo en el auténtico infierno de los hospitales, todo lo que se retrata en esas producciones estadounidenses sobre las salas de urgencias me parece una utopía.

Cuando busqué quién demonios era el creador de The Pitt, encontré a un guionista y productor llamado R. Scott Gemmill. Cuando revisé su filmografía, me di cuenta de por qué no me gustaba The Pitt. Ese guionista también formó parte del equipo detrás de la famosa E.R., pero también ha estado en Hawaii 5.0, Jag y NCIS Los Ángeles. Todas ellas son series procedimentales. Hace varios años, publiqué un post en el que daba mi opinión sobre ese estilo de series, que no me parecía el más atractivo. El atractivo de la serie, cuya primera temporada consta de 15 episodios, es que cada episodio dura una hora en aparente tiempo dreal cuenta con el protagonista, el Dr. Robby. Todo está diseñado para darnos la impresión de que todo sucede en tiempo real, pero, por supuesto, hay trucos involucrados. En el primer episodio, el protagonista camina por un lugar y hay cortes, lo que hace que llegue rápidamente. El supuesto tiempo real lo percibo muy trucado.

Lo que me impactó y también me repugnó desde el primer episodio es que se nos presenta el caso de una mujer cuya nacionalidad se desconoce, nadie la entiende, no sabemos qué idioma habla y todos los médicos, enfermeras, etc., no saben qué hacer. ¡Por el amor de Dios! Como espectador, me pareció el mayor insulto. La maldita serie está ambientada en la actualidad. Todos esos médicos y enfermeras van por ahí con iPhones y a ninguno se le ocurre usar un simple traductor de voz. No lo soporté, amigos. No es que sea muy exigente, pero es un insulto a la inteligencia de cualquiera.

Pero para empeorar las cosas, hay una escena en la que uno de los médicos o enfermeros, no recuerdo quién era, decide usar su teléfono móvil. Maldición. Por un momento, pensé: «Ja, los guionistas solo querían alargar el caso para hacerlo más dramático», pero no, resulta que ella saca su teléfono móvil no para usar el maldito traductor, sino para buscar el mapa del mundo y que la paciente le diga de qué país es. Con esta escena, sentí que los guionistas y el creador de la serie me estaban restregando sus pelotas por la cara, diciéndome que tenía que tragarme todo sin quejarme.

Tiene un gran reparto. Noah Wyle, que también formó parte de E.R., es excelente, y los premios que está recibiendo lo confirman, pero es una serie que encantará a los amantes de los dramas de urgencias. Y aquí me bajo del autobús, no voy a perder 15 horas de mi vida viendo toda la primera temporada, y mucho menos la segunda. Es el tipo de serie que funciona, es buena, pero la descarto de mi lista de visionado.
