The Starling Girl

Faith, beliefs, and religion. Oppression, manipulation, and control. Filmmaker Laurel Parmet's debut feature is a mature and daring film, a drama that tackles issues that may offend some communities, especially those that are extremely religious.
This is her first film, released in 2023, and I didn't see it until a couple of weeks ago. Lately, I've written little about cinema and am struggling to find films that inspire me to talk about their story. After watching many bland films, I came across this one, whose story is intense, although narrated at a leisurely pace, but which manages to convey emotions to me. The director deserves praise; it's a solid debut. Her previous work had been as an actress, a small role in an old movie in which Anne Hathaway plays a horny teenager.
The Starling Girl develops its story in a religious setting. The main characters belong to a congregation of the type that paints a picture of an omnipresent and punishing God. Where everything is bad, everything is sinful, where they are even scandalized by the visible bra straps of a teenager. All these doctrines are centuries old and their purpose, from the beginning, has been to keep the population under control. That's the way the world is, with archaic beliefs, where people criticize those of us who watch movies with dragons because we enjoy fantasy in fictional stories, but they themselves believe in fantasy and want to oppress others.
Fe, creencias y religión. Opresión, manipulación y control. La ópera prima de la cineasta Laurel Parmet es una película madura y atrevida, un drama que aborda temas que pueden ofender a algunas comunidades, especialmente a aquellas que son extremadamente religiosas.
Esta es su primera película, estrenada en 2023, y no la vi hasta hace un par de semanas. Últimamente he escrito poco sobre cine y me está costando encontrar películas que me inspiren para hablar de su historia. Después de ver muchas películas insulsas, me topé con esta, cuya historia es intensa, aunque narrada a un ritmo pausado, pero que consigue transmitirme emociones. La directora merece elogios; es un debut sólido. Su trabajo anterior había sido como actriz, un pequeño papel en una vieja película en la que Anne Hathaway interpreta a una adolescente cachonda.
The Starling Girl desarrolla su historia en un entorno religioso. Los personajes principales pertenecen a una congragación del tipo que pinta un cuadro de un Dios omnipresente y castigador. Donde todo es malo, todo es pecaminoso, donde se escandalizan incluso por los tirantes del sujetador visibles en una adolescente. Todas estas doctrinas que tienen siglos de antigüedad y cuyo propósito, desde el principio, ha sido mantener a la población bajo control. Así es el mundo, con creencias arcaicas, donde la gente critica a quienes vemos películas con dragones porque disfrutamos de la fantasía en las historias ficticias, pero ellos mismos creen en fantasía y quieren oprimir a los demás.
The story follows the life of Jemima, a teenager who grew up in a religious family and dances in the church dance group. Her life has revolved exclusively around serving the Lord. But there is something we cannot fight against: we cannot repress our human nature, our instincts, our desires. We are not machines. We are human beings and we feel, we have needs. She begins to feel tingles, the normal sexual awakening of anyone at that age.
The main conflict arises when Owen, the pastor's eldest son, appears. He is much older and married, and has also lived a life under the yoke of the beliefs instilled in him. Their desire will make them question everything, and we, the viewers, will witness something forbidden by meaningless doctrines. Zero freedom is what any dogma offers. Blind obedience. All my life I've been against all that shit.
Eliza Scanlen's performance is to be commended. Damn, this girl deserves more exposure. I had already seen her in the excellent Caddo Lake, where she also shines. Here, she perfectly captures that teenager torn between the dictatorship of faith instilled in her since birth and the freedom to truly live life, with its flaws and injustices, but also with the pleasures and moments of happiness that make us human.
I recommend that you set aside some prejudices and enjoy this story. All is not lost; good cinema is still being made, it's just hard to find.

La historia sigue la vida de Jemima, una adolescente que creció en una familia religiosa y baila en el grupo de danza de la iglesia. Su vida ha girado exclusivamente en torno al servicio al Señor. Pero hay algo contra lo que no podemos luchar: no podemos reprimir nuestra naturaleza humana, nuestros instintos, nuestros deseos. No somos máquinas. Somos humanos y sentimos, tenemos necesidades. Ella comienza a sentir cosquilleos, el despertar sexual normal de cualquier persona a esa edad.
El conflicto principal surge cuando aparece Owen, el hijo mayor del pastor. Es mucho mayor y está casado, y también ha vivido una vida bajo el yugo de las creencias que le inculcaron. Hay que elogiar la interpretación de Eliza Scanlen. Joder, esta chica se merece más exposición. Ya la había visto en la excelente Caddo Lake, donde también brilla. Aquí captura a la perfección a esa adolescente que se debate entre la dictadura de la fe que le inculcaron desde su nacimiento y la libertad de vivir verdaderamente la vida, con sus defectos, sus injusticias, pero también con los placeres y los momentos de felicidad que nos hacen humanos.
Recomiendo que dejes de lado algunos prejuicios y disfrutes de esta historia. No todo está perdido; todavía se hace buen cine, solo que es difícil de encontrar.

Este tipo de temas es una oportunidad para cuestionar la moral, los valores y hasta donde puede llegar el ser humano para justificarse. Pero nos enfocaremos en ver las interpretaciones y cada fotografía de la película que se ven muy armoniosas en el tráiler.

Es muy buen film. Me gusto como abordaron el tema. Seguramente la directora tuvo que vivir algún tipo de sometimiento religioso.

Está película toca temas sensibles para los que crecieron y viven aún bajo esos dogmas... recuerdo mi adolescencia, todo estaba mal... no podía si contestar a nada, pero el sólo hecho de decir o meter miedo con que esto esta mal entonces irás al infierno o satanás esto o no otro es aberrante, por eso no existe. Es sólo un invento para controlar. En la vida si es real que lo que hacemos vuelve, bueno o malo y vuelve multiplicado, pero no hay una cosa con cuernos esperando en medio del fuego... sólo es una ley física, lo que hacemos revota y vuelve. Pero todas las religiones han hecho esto. Religiones e iglesias. Eso no significa que la fuente y el universo no existan.. o dios, pero el resto es invento del ser humano para control... soy rebelde ahora jajaja

El fin de las religiones es controlar. Una cúpula que se se cree superior moralmente, dirigiendo y dictando las normas en nombre de hechos llenos de fantasía. Vaina que me obstina es cuando un religioso dice la frase: así lo quiso dios, cuando ocurre algo malo, una tragedia. Que frase tan idiota. Cuando me dicen eso, me provoca decirle, vaya al ultimo piso de un edificio y salte, ya que si todo lo que ocurre es porque otro ser lo quiso así, nada tiene sentido. Creencias heredadas de siglos atrás. Historias llenas de fantasía, cuando en la vida real la magia no existe.

La gente es contradictoria... dice así lo quiso Dios, pero dios da el libre albedrío entonces no interviene... contradicción, las cosas son por algo en la vida. Y... si alguien se va... tragedia... era su momento, de que su alma vuelva a la fuente, a los que se quedan acá es para aprender algo.
La magia existe, pero no la que crees... ya lo sabrás, falta menos.
Después que llegue a cierta edad entendí que las religiones ganan adeptos con la manipulación, y el control. Creo en Dios pero no en los seres humanos que visten sotanas o pastores, ellos quizás algunos son tan monstruos como otros que andan por ahí libremente.

Lo que no soporto de la gente hiper religiosa, es que se creen tener una autoridad oral superior. yo rechazo desde pequeño todos esos dogmas y doctrinas que se hicieron para controlar a la gente.

What is truly captivating about this is that the way this film illustrates how strong, often dogmatic faith and refreshing, sinful temptation often clashes and even merges to create a kind of conflict that puts the 'Starling Girl' into total collapse, and the director does it so vividly. The performance of these actors did a splendid job of portraying these concepts, and the director magically makes it so that everyone can resonate and relate to the situations faced by the personas in the story. From the beginning, I think we already know what the course of the story may be, and yet it engages. The tension between Jemima's inner world and the rigidity of the outside world is chewed throughout the film, and here it is necessary to name Eliza Scanlen, who as you highlight is huge.
It seems to me a brave film because of the pace, so unusual in today's cinema, and because there is history not an emptiness hidden behind a frenetic pace and special effects. As to whether it is brave because of the subject matter, I don't think so, although I certainly sympathize with the teenager Jemina.

Entiendo esa pelea con el cine actual. Tampoco soy un chaval , pero a pesar de mi edad, igual disfruto de películas que son para la actual generación, aunque este ultimo año tengo menos paciencia para films que no me gustan y las dejo de ver si no me engancha.
Esta tiene lo que busco, que me transmita algo su historia. La actriz la vi el año pasado en un film llamado Caddo Lake y allí también resalta con su personaje. Me agrada.
Concuerdo en lo que dices, he visto varias estrenadas recientemente con ritmo frenético , pero completamente vacías.

No te preocupes, por si te preocupa, pero ya me imagino que no eres un chaval. Sólo hay que leerte para saberlo. Pero seguramente, tienes los suficientes años menos para tener esa paciencia que yo no tengo.
Sobre Caddo Lake no la he visto, así que seguramente la veré muy pronto.
