Después de ver Gladiator 2 me quedé como no sé como decirlo no quiero usar la palabra decepcionada pero si esperaba mucho más después de casi 25 años desde que salió la original que hasta ahora sigue siendo mi favorita, pero la cosa es que esta secuela fue como que quisieron hacer exactamente lo mismo otra vez esperando el mismo resultado, solo que con actores nuevos y efectos modernos y en mi opinión esto no funcionó para nada. Paul Mescal puede ser muy guapo y todo pero como protagonista fue el mayor problema que tuvo esta película, no tiene esa presencia que te hace creer que este tipo puede liderar hombres o inspirar a alguien, Russell Crowe imponía ese respeto en pantalla solo con su presencia física, era imposible no sentir que estabas viendo a un verdadero líder de guerreros, en cambio Mescal se ve como un niño jugando a ser gladiador, digame en esas escenas donde trata de dar discursos motivacionales que tenían que ser salvados por la música dramática en lugar de por su carisma natural. Su físico tampoco ayudaba mucho para lo que requiere el papel, parece que acababa de salir del gimnasio por primera vez en su vida, no como alguien que ha luchado en batallas reales o que tiene la experiencia necesaria para sobrevivir en el Coliseo y la otra cosa es que me pareció que no tenía buena química con el resto de los actores era todo como forzado. Los emperadores gemelos que interpretan Joseph Quinn y Fred Hechinger tampoco es que te hacían sentir peligro real o tiranía que era lo que necesitaba la historia para funcionar, se veían mas como dos niños ricos jugando a ser malvados que como verdaderos tiranos que pudieran aterrorizar a todo un imperio.

Lo que mas me frustró de toda la experiencia fue que durante el primer tiempo casi que toda la mitad la película basicamnte recicla los mismos elementos narrativos de la primera, está el protagonista que pierde a su familia, termina como esclavo gladiador y busca venganza contra el general que le quitó todo, es literalmente la misma fórmula pero sin esa parte emotiva que hacía que funcionara originalmente. Denzel Washington como Macrinus fue lo único rescatable de todos los actores, el tipo sabe actuar y logra darle cierta profundidad a un personaje que fácilmente podría haber sido otro un malo más, su interpretación del manipulador político ambicioso está bien ejecutada aunque tampoco es nada revolucionario. Pedro Pascal como el General Acacius hace lo que puede con un papel que está escrito de manera bastante predecible, desde el primer momento sabes que no es realmente el malo y que hay una conexión más profunda con el protagonista que se revelará más adelante, creo que pensaron que no íbamos a ser inteligentes para entenderlo y lo hicieron muy obvio jajaja. Las escenas de acción están bien hechas y tienen un presupuesto claramente alto, pero les falta esa brutalidad visceral que tenían las peleas de la película original, no hay esa crudeza y realidad como debería ser el combate gladiador, hasta los efectos especiales se ven demasiado digitales comparados con la primera peli.

La dirección sigue siendo de Ridley Scott y no se que le está pasando a este tipo o si es que estaba en piloto automático, se sabe que tiene experiencia haciendo este tipo de películas épicas pero aquí no siente pasión real por el material, es como si estuviera cumpliendo un contrato más que contando una historia que realmente le importa contar, esa due la impresión que me dio toda esta peli. El guión es quizás lo más débil de todo esto porque los diálogos son como artificiales y muchas veces redundantes, hay demasiada exposición forzada donde los personajes explican cosas que deberían mostrarse visualmente, las motivaciones de los personajes cambian sin justificación adecuada solo para mover la trama hacia donde necesita ir el libreto y listo. Los flashbacks constantes a la película original en lugar de ayudar a conectar ambas historias solo sirven para recordarte lo mucho mejor que era la primera versión, creo que no confiaron en que esta historia podía sistenerse sola y tuvieron que recurrir al pasado y en mí caso lo que lograron fue que estuviera comparando siempre y que definitivamente prefiero la primera parte. Otra cosa es el ritmo ya en la tercera parte es como apresurada todo se resuelve de manera muy convincente, no hay un buen desarrollo ni mucho drama es más el final llega y no llegué a sentir una conexión real con ninguno de los personajes nuevos.

En lo visual no me quejo tiene cosas que son impresionantes, me gustó cmo recrearon el Coliseo y las batallas navales dentro aunque hay cosas que son demasiado artificial por el abuso de efectos digitales y vuelvo otra vez pero en la primera película esto también era más convincente, que esté comparando mucho no es mi culpa ellos mismos se lo buscaron por traer tantas escenas de la primera parte a esta. El diseño de producción está bien aunque no sea nada memorable, los vestuarios y escenarios cumplen su función sin agregar nada particularmente innovador o interesante a lo que ya uno conocía, hasta los nuevos gladiadores y las nuevas armas son como variaciones menores de lo que ya se había visto antes. La banda sonora de Hans Zimmer intenta recapturar la magia musical de la original pero termina siendo una versión inferior que depende demasiado de reciclar temas musicales existentes en lugar de crear nuevas melodías que se te puedan quedar grabadas y puedas recordar, las escenas de acción mas importantes están acompañadas por música que ya había escuchado en la primera película lo cual rompe con eso de que te puedas meter de lleno en la película.

Para mí Gladiator 2 es una secuela innecesaria si no la hubiesen hecho no afecta en nada, creo que existe más por razones comerciales en lugar de artísticas, no aporta nada nuevo o significativo al legado de la película original y en muchos casos hasta lo daña por asociación. Lo siento pero Paul Mescal no tiene lo necesario para cargar una película de esta magnitud y mpas si siempre va a ser comparado con Russell Crowe quien entregó una de las mejores actuaciones en la historia del cine épico, es injusto para él pero también es la realidad cuando decides hacer una secuela de una película tan icónica. Los pocos momentos buenos que tiene la película están completamente opacados por la sensación que tuve de que estaba viendo algo que ya había visto antes pero hecho de manera inferior, no me gustó y me da lastima porque pudieron haber sacado una buena secuela. Yo le doy un 6/10 y estoy siendo buena creo que por la nostalgia que me da la primera peli, creo que aunque sea muy buena a nivel técnico es una película vacía a nivel emocional y más bien debe usarse como un recordatorio de que algunas obras maestras deberían quedarse como únicas en lugar de estar explotándolas comercialmente hasta el cansancio, yo te digo que si la ves lo hagas con expectativas muy bajas y así tal vez la disfrutes más de lo que yo lo hice.

After watching Gladiator 2 I was like I don't know how to say it I don't want to use the word disappointed but I was expecting much more after almost 25 years since the original came out which until now is still my favorite, but the thing is that this sequel was like they wanted to do exactly the same thing again expecting the same result, only with new actors and modern effects and in my opinion this didn't work at all. Paul Mescal can be very handsome and all but as the main character was the biggest problem this movie had, he doesn't have that presence that makes you believe that this guy can lead men or inspire someone, Russell Crowe imposed that respect on screen just with his physical presence, it was impossible not to feel that you were watching a real warrior leader, instead Mescal looks like a kid playing gladiator, tell me in those scenes where he tries to give motivational speeches that had to be saved by the dramatic music instead of his natural charisma. His physique also didn't help much for what the role requires, he looks like he just came out of the gym for the first time in his life, not like someone who has fought in real battles or has the experience needed to survive in the Colosseum and the other thing is that I felt he didn't have good chemistry with the rest of the actors it was all kind of forced. The twin emperors played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger also didn't make you feel real danger or tyranny which is what the story needed to work, they looked more like two rich kids playing evil than real tyrants that could terrorize an entire empire.

What frustrated me the most about the whole experience was that for almost half of the first half the movie basically recycles the same narrative elements of the first one, there's the protagonist who loses his family, ends up as a gladiator slave and seeks revenge against the general who took everything from him, it's literally the same formula but without that emotional part that made it work originally. Denzel Washington as Macrinus was the only redeemable of all the actors, the guy knows how to act and manages to give some depth to a character that could easily have been just another bad guy, his interpretation of the ambitious political manipulator is well executed although it is nothing revolutionary either. Pedro Pascal as General Acacius does what he can with a role that is rather predictably written, from the first moment you know he's not really the bad guy and that there is a deeper connection to the protagonist that will be revealed later on, I guess they thought we weren't going to be smart enough to understand him and made it too obvious hahaha. The action scenes are well done and clearly high budget, but they lack that visceral brutality that the fights in the original movie had, there's not that rawness and reality as gladiatorial combat should be, even the special effects look too digital compared to the first movie.

The direction is still by Ridley Scott and I don't know what is happening to this guy or if he was on autopilot, it is known that he has experience making this kind of epic movies but here he doesn't feel real passion for the material, it's as if he was fulfilling a contract rather than telling a story that he really cares about telling, that's the impression I got from this movie. The script is perhaps the weakest thing about it all because the dialogue is kind of contrived and often redundant, there is too much forced exposition where characters explain things that should be shown visually, character motivations change without proper justification just to move the plot where the script needs to go and that's it. The constant flashbacks to the original movie instead of helping to connect both stories only serve to remind you how much better the first version was, I think they did not trust that this story could stand alone and had to resort to the past and in my case what they achieved was that I was always comparing and I definitely prefer the first part. Another thing is the rhythm in the third part is like rushed everything is resolved in a very convincing way, there is no good development or much drama is more the end comes and I did not get to feel a real connection with any of the new characters.

In the visuals I'm not complaining it has things that are impressive, I liked how they recreated the Colosseum and the naval battles inside although there are things that are too artificial by the abuse of digital effects and I go back again but in the first film this was also more convincing, I'm comparing a lot is not my fault they themselves brought it on themselves by bringing so many scenes from the first part to this one. The production design is fine even if it's nothing memorable, the costumes and sets do their job without adding anything particularly innovative or interesting to what one already knew, even the new gladiators and new weapons are like minor variations of what had already been seen before. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer tries to recapture the musical magic of the original but ends up being an inferior version that relies too much on recycling existing musical themes instead of creating new melodies that can stick with you and you can remember, the most important action scenes are accompanied by music that I had already heard in the first film which breaks with that you can get fully into the film.

For me Gladiator 2 is an unnecessary sequel if they hadn't made it it wouldn't affect anything, I think it exists more for commercial reasons rather than artistic ones, it doesn't add anything new or significant to the legacy of the original film and in many cases even damages it by association. I'm sorry but Paul Mescal doesn't have what it takes to carry a film of this magnitude and more so if he is always going to be compared to Russell Crowe who delivered one of the best performances in the history of epic cinema, it's unfair to him but it's also the reality when you decide to make a sequel to such an iconic film. The few good moments the movie has are completely overshadowed by the feeling I had that I was watching something I had seen before but done in an inferior way, I didn't like it and I feel sorry for it because they could have made a good sequel. I give it a 6/10 and I'm being good I think because of the nostalgia that gives me the first movie, I think that although it is very good on a technical level it is an empty movie on an emotional level and should rather be used as a reminder that some masterpieces should remain as unique instead of exploiting them commercially to exhaustion, I tell you that if you see it do it with very low expectations and then maybe you will enjoy it more than I did.
