What a weird movie I saw, it's The Amateur was released recently I think in April this year if I remember correctly, I saw the trailer before and I had my doubts but I decided to give it a chance, I was not sure if Rami Malik could carry a whole action movie being the protagonist, is that the guy has a very particular face and it seems that he is always scared or as if he was sucking a lemon hehehehehehe. This is a revenge story about Charlie Heler, he is a nerd who works for the CIA cracking codes in the basement of the offices and his wife Sarah is killed during a terrorist attack in London, then he decides to take justice in his own hands, same story of these revenge movies, his bosses in the CIA don't want to do anything about it because they have their own interests, so Charlie blackmails them with compromising information he found about illegal operations they are doing under the table and tells them to train him as a field agent and give him money and weapons to go after his wife's killers or he will leak all that information to journalists, of course the bosses agree thinking that he will die in the attempt and problem solved, but it turns out that this guy is smarter than it seems and begins to use his brain to eliminate one by one those responsible for the death of his wife.

Que película más rara vi, es The Amateur se estrenó hace poco creo que en abril de este año si no recuerdo mal, vi el trailer desde antes y ya tenía mis dudas pero decidí darle una oportunidad, es que no estaba segura si Rami Malik podía cargar con toda una película de acción siendo el protagonista, es que el tipo tiene una cara muy particular que y parece que siempre asustado o como si estuviera chupando un limón jejejeje. Esta es una historia de venganza que trata sobre Charlie Heler, es un nerd que trabaja para la CIA descifrando códigos en el sótano de las oficinas y su esposa Sarah es asesinada durante un ataque terrorista en Londres, entonces él decide tomar la justicia en sus propias manos, la misma historia de estas películas de venganza, sus jefes en la CIA no quieren hacer nada al respecto porque tienen sus propios intereses, entonces Charlie los chantajea con información comprometedora que encontró sobre operaciones ilegales que están haciendo por debajo de la mesa y les dice que lo entrenen como agente de campo y le den dinero y armas para ir tras los asesinos de su esposa o él va a filtrar toda esa información a los periodistas, por supuesto los jefes acceden pensando que el carajo va a morir en el intento y problema resuelto, pero resulta que este tipo es más inteligente de lo que parece y empieza a usar su cerebro para ir eliminando uno por uno a los responsables de la muerte de su esposa.

The movie has its good things and others that are not, first I would not have chosen Rami Malik as the action protagonist is that he looks like a chihuahua acting, all nervous and with bulging eyes, he looks perfect in weird characters like in Mr Robot or Freddie Mercury, but here trying to be an avenger I don't know it's like out of place. Another thing I didn't like is that the movie feels too long, it's more than two hours and I think at least if it had been shortened by 30 minutes it wouldn't have affected the story because there are many unnecessary scenes that are just as filler, also some of the deaths Charlie causes are quite questionable, the guy puts a bomb in a bar full of people in Paris and destroys a glass pool that was obviously going to fall on the street and kill innocent people, he is supposed to want revenge but he is quite selfish and ends up being just as bad as those he is after. John Bernthal appears in the movie but his character is completely useless, he appears at the beginning for five minutes and then comes back almost at the end for another scene that adds nothing to the story I didn't see the point of hiring an actor like him to do practically nothing. What I found interesting was the premise of the movie because even though it's the same story of the guy who gets his wife killed and wants revenge this is not a super trained ex-military guy who goes around killing people everywhere, but a normal guy who has to use his intelligence to survive, another thing I liked was Lawrence Fishburne as Charlie's trainer even though he doesn't appear as much as I would have liked.

La película tiene sus cosas buenas y otras que no lo son, primero yo no hubiese escogido a Rami Malik como protagonista de acción es que parece como un chihuahua actuando, todo nervioso y con los ojos saltones, queda perfecto en personajes raros como en Mr Robot o como Freddie Mercury, pero aquí tratando de ser un vengador no lo sé es como fuera de lugar. Otra de las cosas que no me gustó es que la peli se siente demasiado larga, son más de dos horas y creo que mínimo si se hubiese acortado unos 30 minutos no hubiese afectado la historia porque hay muchas escenas innecesarias y que solo están como relleno, además algunas de las muertes que Charlie causa son bastante cuestionables, el tipo pone una bomba en un bar lleno de gente en París y destruye una piscina de cristal que obviamente iba a caer sobre la calle y matar a personas inocentes, se supone que quiere venganza pero es bastante egoístas y termina siendo igual de malo que a los que persigue. John Bernthal aparece en la película pero su personaje es completamente inútil, aparece al principio por cinco minutos y luego regresa casi al final para otra escena que no aporta nada a la historia no le vi el sentido a contratar a un actor como él para hacer prácticamente nada. Lo que me pareció interesante fue la premisa de la película porque aunque sea la misma historia del tipo que le matan a la esposa y quiere venganza este no es ex militar súper entrenado que va matando gente por todos lados, sino un tipo normal que tiene que usar su inteligencia para sobrevivir, otra cosa que me gustó fue Lawrence Fishburne como el entrenador de Charlie aunque no sale tanto como me hubiese gustado.

The end of the movie is kind of disappointing because after all the tension they had built up, Charlie gets to the main bad guy and instead of killing him he decides to hand him over to the authorities this scene is pretty ridiculous because the bad guy gives him a loaded gun and gets on his knees expecting him to kill him but he can't do it and instead he had already programmed the ship to sail to Finnish waters where the navy would be waiting for them, this makes no sense at all because at what point he programmed all this I don't know and besides after he killed innocent people now he can't kill the bad guy. Another lousy thing is the acting in this scene because the bad guy is supposed to be scared to death realizing that Charlie is in control but it doesn't convey any of that and there is also like a plot about corruption in the CIA that is well forced and at the end is resolved in a very convenient way with the new director announcing on TV that they already cleaned up all the corruption as if that was so easy.

El final de la película es algo decepcionante porque después de toda la tensión que habían construido, Charlie llega al malo principal y en lugar de matarlo decide entregarlo a las autoridades esta escena es bien ridícula porque el malo le da una pistola cargada y se pone de rodillas esperando que lo mate pero el no puede hacerlo y en su lugar ya había programado el barco para que navegara hacia aguas finlandesas donde la marina los estaría esperando, esto no tiene nada de sentido porque en que momento programó todo esto no lo sé y además después de que mató gente inocente ahora no puede matar al malo. Otra cosa pésima es la actuación en esta escena porque se supone que el malo debe estar muerto de miedo al darse cuenta de que Charlie tiene el control pero no transmite nada de eso y también hay como una trama sobre corrupción en la CIA que es bien forzada y que al final se resuelve de manera muy conveniente con la nueva directora anunciando en televisión que ya limpiaron toda la corrupción como si eso fuera tan fácil.

The movie ends with Charlie flying a small plane that his wife had bought him to overcome his fear of flying and it is supposed to be an emotional scene but it is quite cheesy and forced, my score for The Amateur is 6.5/10, it is saved because it has an interesting premise and some good moments, but it is too long, the performances are not very good and the ending is very disappointing, the main character doesn't seem to me to be suitable for this kind of movies either. I think The Amateur could have been much better with some different decisions, the idea of a computer nerd turned avenger is good and there are moments where we see Charlie using his intelligence to solve problems instead of brute force and this catches but I think they sabotaged with the length and with some secondary characters that do not contribute anything. There are also some coincidences that make the story feel not very credible as the terrorists who killed his wife coincidentally were also involved with the illegal operation of his boss, plus some of the technologies that Charlie uses seem out of a science fiction movie as when he manages to put his face on the bodies of other people in the security cameras to confuse the CIA I do not know if I'm wrong but I think that's not possible hehehe. There are better options than this if you are looking for a good revenge movie but if you still want to see it don't expect anything out of this world.

La película termina con Charlie volando un avión pequeño que su esposa le había comprado para que superara su miedo a volar y se supone que debe ser una escena emotiva pero es bastante cursi y forzada, mi puntuación para The Amateur es 6.5/10, se salva porque tiene una premisa interesante y algunos momentos buenos, pero es demasiado larga, las actuaciones no son muy buenas y el final es muy decepcionante, el protagonista tampoco me parece indicado para este tipo de películas. Creo que The Amateur pudo haber sido mucho mejor con algunas decisiones diferentes, la idea de un nerd de computadoras convertido en vengador es buena y hay momentos donde vemos a Charlie usando su inteligencia para resolver problemas en lugar de la fuerza bruta y esto atrapa pero creo que sabotearon con la duración y con algunos personajes secundarios que no aportan nada. También hay unas coincidencias que hacen que la historia se sienta poco creíble como que los terroristas que mataron a su esposa casualmente también estaban involucrados con la operación ilegal de su jefe, además que algunas de las tecnologías que usa Charlie parecen sacadas de una película de ciencia ficción como cuando logra poner su cara en los cuerpos de otras personas en las cámaras de seguridad para confundir a la CIA yo no sé si estoy equivocada pero creo que eso no es posible jejeje. Hay mejores opciones que esta si buscas una buena película de venganza pero si igual la quieres ver no esperes nada delñ otro mundo.
