They made so much hype with Wolf Man 2025 by Lee Whannell, the same guy who made The Invisible Man and Upgrade, so much so that I was expecting something much better but I ended up seeing a movie that feels like it was half-baked. The movie starts off with an interesting idea, a father returning with his family to his childhood home in Oregon after his dad disappears, but this is supposed to be about generational trauma and the transformation of a man into a beast but it didn't quite pull it off and that's with Christopher Abbott doing a good job as Blake, the protagonist who slowly turns into a werewolf after being attacked by a mysterious creature. The problem with Wolf Man is not the acting, but the film seems to be a family drama, a body horror film and a survival thriller all at once and in the end this combination fails to convince. Blake's transformation is slow and painful, he loses his teeth, his hair falls out, he can't communicate with his family and he becomes a threat to the people he loves most, though all of this is superficial as if these important moments don't carry emotional weight with everything he's going through.

La película arranca con una idea interesante, un padre que regresa con su familia a la casa de su infancia en Oregon después de que su papá desaparece, pero se supone que esto debería ser sobre trauma generacional y la transformación de un hombre en bestia pero no lo logró y eso que Christopher Abbott hace un buen trabajo como Blake, el protagonista que lentamente se convierte en hombre lobo después de ser atacado por una criatura misteriosa. El problema de Wolf Man no es la actuación, sino que la película parece ser un drama familiar, una película de terror corporal y un thriller de supervivencia, todo a la vez y al final esta combinación no logra convencer. Something I didn't like about Wolf Man is that it wants to cover a lot of things and doesn't end up focusing well on one, because it wants to deal with toxic parenting and generational trauma, but it only devotes the first 20 minutes to these issues and then abandons them completely when Blake begins his transformation. There are flashbacks of Blake as a child with his father Grady, who is a strict and distant military man and then there is Blake as an adult trying not to repeat the same mistakes with his daughter Ginger, but this is not something that is developed enough to be an astonishment. The relationship between Blake and his wife Charlotte, played by Julia Garner, is also somewhat null because their marriage is supposed to be in trouble but we only see one or two scenes where this becomes apparent and when Blake begins to transform, the marital tension disappears because now they have bigger problems to solve. The character of Derek, the son of a family friend who helps them find the house, is completely unnecessary and only serves as cannon fodder for the werewolf, his dialogue is terrible and his death carries no emotional weight because we barely even know about him, I got the impression that he is the kind of character that exists only to advance the plot in the most obvious way possible.

Algo que no me gustó de Wolf Man es que quiere abarcar muchas cosas y no se termina de enfocar bien en una, porque quiere tratar el tema de paternidad tóxica y trauma generacional, pero solo le dedica los primeros 20 minutos a estos temas y luego los abandona completamente cuando Blake comienza su transformación. Hay unos flashbacks de Blake de niño con su padre Grady, que es un militar estricto y distante y luego está Blake de adulto tratando de no repetir los mismos errores con su hija Ginger, pero esto no es algo que se desarrolla lo suficiente como para que sea un asombro. La relación entre Blake y su esposa Charlotte, interpretada por Julia Garner, también es algo nula porque se supone que su matrimonio está en problemas pero solo vemos una o dos escenas donde esto se hace evidente y cuando Blake comienza a transformarse, la tensión marital desaparece porque ahora tienen problemas más grandes que resolver. I think Wolf Man completely wastes Lee Whannell's talent as a director, because this guy managed to make The Invisible Man terrifying on a relatively low budget, but here I didn't understand what happened to him it's like he was working with his hands tied. And although the effects of the transformation look good, the part where Blake loses his teeth and gets claws is disturbing but the final design of the werewolf is disappointing, it looks more like a man with alopecia problems than a scary monster hehehe. Another problem the movie has is the pacing, the scenes in the family house are long and don't create enough tension and when the action moments come everything happens too fast and I didn't like this, the revelation that the werewolf attacking the family is actually Blake's father should be devastating but it's so obvious that it doesn't generate any impact. I think Whannell wanted to do something different with the werewolf myth by treating it more like a disease than a supernatural curse, but I think he failed to develop it well and doesn't do it in an interesting way in the end it just makes the movie feel less magical and that's it, not that it's a big change.

Yo creo que Wolf Man desperdicia completamente el talento de Lee Whannell como director, porque este tipo logró que The Invisible Man fuera aterradora con un presupuesto relativamente bajo, pero aquí no entendí que le pasó es como si estuviera trabajando con las manos atadas. Y aunque los efectos de la transformación se ven bien, la parte en la que Blake pierde los dientes y le salen garras es perturbadora pero el diseño final del hombre lobo es decepcionante, parece más un hombre con problemas de alopecia que un monstruo aterrador jejeje. Otro problema que tiene la peli es el ritmo, son largas las escenas de la casa familiar y no crean suficiente tensión y cuando llegan los momentos de acción todo pasda muy rápido y esto no me gustó, la revelación de que el hombre lobo que ataca a la familia es en realidad el padre de Blake debería ser devastadora pero es tan obvia que no genera ningún impacto. Creo que Whannell quería hacer algo diferente con el mito del hombre lobo tratándolo más como una enfermedad que como una maldición sobrenatural, pero creo que no logó desarrollarlo bien y no lo hace de forma interesante al final solo hace que la película se sienta menos mágica y ya, no es que sea un gran cambio.

In my opinion the best thing the movie has going for it is Christopher Abbott's performance, you can feel the desperation of this man who is losing his humanity while trying to protect his family, especially in the scenes where he can no longer speak and has to communicate only with gestures and grunts. Julia Garner also does what she can, because it seems to me that her character is not very consistent, I say this because one moment she is a worried wife and the next she is a capable survivor who knows how to use firearms without any explanation. My score for Wolf Man is 6/10 because although the acting of the main character is good, the sound of the werewolf when he is roaming around the houses and the visual part too, I think these are not enough reasons to save a story that in my opinion is incomplete, although there are some moments of body horror that are quite disturbing, like when Blake starts chewing his own wounded arm, this is something like isolated it doesn't seem like it was a coherent part of the hisotria to create that total horror.

En mi opinión lo mejor que tiene la película es la actuación de Christopher Abbott, se siente la desesperación de este hombre que está perdiendo su humanidad mientras trata de proteger a su familia, sobre todo en las escenas donde ya no puede hablar y tiene que comunicarse solo con gestos y gruñidos. Julia Garner también hace lo que puede, porque me parece que su personaje no es muy consistente, lo digo porque en un momento es una esposa preocupada y al siguiente es una superviviente capaz que sabe cómo usar armas de fuego sin explicación alguna. Mi puntuación para Wolf Man es 6/10 porque aunque la actuación del protagonista es buena, el sonido del hombre lobo cuando está rondando por las casas y la parte visual también, creo que estos no son motivos suficientes para salvar una historia que en mi opinión está incompleta, aunque hay algunos momentos de horror corporal que son bastante perturbadores, como cuando Blake comienza a masticar su propio brazo herido, esto es algo como aislado no parece que fuera una parte coherente de la hisotria para crear ese horror total.

I think the opportunity with Wolf Man was missed because it had a good idea to be something innovative from a classic myth, it had a talented director, I think the budget was decent too but the end result didn't hit the nail on the head. To me it's not scary enough to be a good horror flick nor emotional enough to be a family drama, I see it as an average movie and that's sad coming from someone like Whannell. The movie ends with Charlotte killing Blake to put him out of his misery and this ending should be somewhat devastating but it's more of a relief because it means the movie is finally over hehehe, okay it won't be a terrible movie but it's pretty mediocre.

Yo creo que la oportunidad con Wolf Man se perdió porque tenía una buena idea para ser algo innovador de un mito clásico, tenía un director talentoso, creo que el presupuesto también era decente pero el resultado final no dio en el clavo. Para mí no es tan aterradora para ser una buena peli de terror ni tan emotiva para que sea un drama familiar, yo la veo como una película promedio y es triste viniendo de alguien como Whannell. La película termina con Charlotte matando a Blake para ponerle fin a su miseria y este final debería ser algo devastador pero es más bien un alivio porque significa que la película finalmente terminó jejeje, está bien no será una película terrible pero es bastante mediocre.
