🎬 *Review sin spoilers*: “Sinners” (o *Los pecadores*) 🎬

¡Hola amigos! Tranquilos, que no hay spoilers (por ahora, jajaja). Hoy quiero dejarles mi opinión sobre la película Sinners, conocida en Latinoamérica como Los pecadores.

Hello friends! Relax, there are no spoilers (for now, hahaha). Today I want to leave you my opinion about the movie Sinners, known in Latin America as Los pecadores.

Confieso que no soy fan de las películas de época, pero sí me encantan las de misterio y terror. La empecé a ver porque tenía muy buena puntuación, aunque el tráiler no me dejó muy claro de qué trataba (¿a ti también te pasó?). Aun así, decidí darle una oportunidad... ¡y valió totalmente la pena!

I confess I'm not a fan of period films, but I do love mystery and horror movies. I started watching it because it had very good ratings, although the trailer didn't make it very clear to me what it was about (did that happen to you too?). Still, I decided to give it a chance.... and it was totally worth it!

✨ ¿Qué me gustó?

Debo decir que Sinners superó mis expectativas. Es perfecta para verla un fin de semana o para pasar el rato si te gustan los thrillers con toques sobrenaturales. La actuación de Michael B. Jordan fue increíble; le dio mucho carácter y emoción a su papel.

What did I like?
I must say that Sinners exceeded my expectations. It's perfect to watch on a weekend or to pass the time if you like thrillers with supernatural touches. The performance of Michael B. Jordan was amazing; he brought a lot of character and emotion to his role.

Además, la dirección de fotografía es preciosa. Las escenas están compuestas de una forma tan estética, tan cuidada, que parece que cada toma es una pintura. Los contrastes de luz, los colores, los encuadres... ¡una joya visual!

In addition, the direction of photography is beautiful. The scenes are composed in such an aesthetic way, so carefully, that it seems that each shot is a painting. The contrasts of light, the colors, the framing... a visual jewel!

🌍 Una película que toca temas profundos

Aunque no lo hace de forma directa, la película toca el tema del racismo, al estar ambientada en una época donde ser afrodescendiente significaba vivir con prejuicios constantes. Como mujer con raíces afroamericanas, este tipo de películas siempre me hacen reflexionar y agradecer el contexto en el que vivo ahora. Me resulta imposible imaginar una vida donde uno era juzgado solo por su color de piel… o en mi caso, por tener una mezcla de ambos mundos.

Although it doesn't do so directly, the film touches on the issue of racism, being set in a time where being of African descent meant living with constant prejudice. As a woman with African-American roots, these types of films always make me reflect and appreciate the context in which I live now. It is impossible for me to imagine a life where one was judged only by their skin color... or in my case, for having a mix of both worlds.

En la historia, los personajes sueñan con un lugar donde puedan ser libres para reír, bailar y vivir sin miedo. De ahí nace la idea de una cantina, un espacio para disfrutar, pero también para sobrevivir económicamente.

In the story, the characters dream of a place where they can be free to laugh, dance and live without fear. From there, the idea of a cantina is born, a place to enjoy, but also to survive economically.

🎶 Música, fe y advertencias espirituales

Uno de los protagonistas, Sammie, es hijo de un pastor, y su familia espera que él continúe ese legado. Pero su pasión es la música: canta y toca con una sensibilidad hermosa. El conflicto surge cuando su padre le advierte que no debe tocar esa noche, que si lo hace “el de allá abajo” vendrá por él… y bueno, ¡adivinen qué pasa! 😅

One of the main characters, Sammie, is the son of a shepherd, and his family expects him to carry on that legacy. But his passion is music: he sings and plays with beautiful sensitivity. Conflict arises when his father warns him not to play that night, that if he does "the one down there" will come for him... and well, guess what happens! 😅

Esa parte me impactó muchísimo. Hay una escena donde Sammie se conecta tanto con la música que parece entrar en otro plano… y eso me hizo pensar en cómo a veces, cuando uno se abre espiritualmente, no solo puede atraer luz, sino también oscuridad si no se tiene cuidado. Como decimos aquí en Venezuela: “Guerra avisada no mata soldado. Y si lo mata es por descuidado”. Sammie estaba advertido… y aun así desobedeció. ¿A quién no le ha pasado algo así? Como cuando tu mamá te dice “llévate una sombrilla” y uno no hace caso, ¡y zas! Terminas empapado.

That part had a huge impact on me. There is a scene where Sammie connects so much with the music that she seems to enter another plane... and that made me think about how sometimes, when you open yourself spiritually, you can not only attract light, but also darkness if you are not careful. As we say here in Venezuela: "A war warned does not kill a soldier. And if it kills him it is because he is careless ". Sammie was warned... and yet he disobeyed. Who hasn't had something like this happen to them? Like when your mother tells you "take an umbrella" and you don't listen, and wham! You end up soaked.

🎭 Reflexión final (sin spoilers, lo prometo)

El final me dejó impactada, aunque algo dentro de mí ya lo presentía. La enseñanza que me dejó Sammie es que si amas algo, lucha por ello... pero también debes tener el valor de asumir las consecuencias. La vida a veces te pone en situaciones donde debes decidir entre lo fácil y lo correcto. Y algo que me encantó fue cómo la película transmite que no necesitas más tiempo si viviste con sentido: a veces buscar “más” solo nos aleja de lo que importa.

The ending left me shocked, although something inside me already sensed it. The lesson Sammie left me with is that if you love something, fight for it... but you must also have the courage to take the consequences. Life sometimes puts you in situations where you have to decide between what's easy and what's right. And something I loved was how the movie conveys that you don't need more time if you lived meaningfully: sometimes looking for "more" only takes us away from what matters.
