Esta no es la típica película de deportes, pues más allá de basarse en hechos reales, no se centra en el típico desarrollo emocional de los deportistas hasta conseguir el éxito, sino que se enfoca en aspectos más cuantitativos, los datos y las estadísticas, y como a partir de esta premisa, se cambió el béisbol para siempre. Más específicamente, se trata de como Billy Beane, el manager de uno de los equipos con menos capital de la MLB para aquel momento, a base de números y racionalidad, arma un equipo que llegó a romper múltiples records en el año 2002, consiguiendola seguidilla de victorias más larga de la historia, 20 triunfos al ruedo en la temporada regular.

This isn't your typical sports movie. Beyond being based on real events, it doesn't focus on the typical emotional development of athletes leading to success. Instead, it focuses on more quantitative aspects: data and statistics, and how, based on this premise, baseball changed forever. More specifically, it's about how Billy Beane, the manager of one of the MLB's most undercapitalized teams at the time, built a team that broke multiple records in 2002, achieving the longest winning streak in history: 20 regular-season victories.

Billy Beane logró armar un equipo sólido la temporada pasada al inicio de los acontecimientos de la cinta, pero sabía que perdería a muchos de sus mejores jugadores, ya que a nivel económico, no podía competir con las grandes franquicias del deporte. Ante la negativa de la directiva, y viendo como la selección de jugadores prospectos para los Athletics seguía siendo muy arcaica y se basaba más en características físicas, y no mirando fríamente el rendimiento o los números, dio un cambio total a la forma de armar la plantilla, siendo tildado de loco al inicio.

Billy Beane managed to assemble a solid team last season at the start of the film's events, but he knew he would lose many of his best players, as he couldn't compete financially with the big franchises in the sport. Faced with management's refusal, and seeing how the Athletics' selection of prospects remained archaic and based more on physical characteristics than on performance or numbers, he completely changed his way of putting together the roster, being initially labeled a madman.

Este radical cambio en la forma de ver el juego cambio para siempre el béisbol, tanto fue así, que ni siquiera el entrenador del equipo confiaba en las directrices de su jefe, por lo que el intercambio de un jugador que se tenía en mente que iba a ser un salón de la fama en el futuro, por otros de menos cache, pero que complementaban de mejor forma la estrategia, fue vista como una de las decisiones más estúpidas de la historia, en ese momento en específico. Pero como si fuera como por arte de magia, empezaron a ganar con el cambio en el roster, hasta no sólo conseguir las 20 victorias consecutivas, sino que además, quedaron en primer lugar en su división.

This radical shift in the way the game was viewed forever changed baseball, so much so that not even the team's manager trusted his boss's directives, so trading a player who was thought to be a future Hall of Famer for others of lesser cachet, but who better complemented the strategy, was seen as one of the stupidest decisions in history, at that specific moment. But as if by magic, they began to win with the roster change, to the point of not only achieving 20 consecutive victories, but also finishing in first place in their division.

Y aunque finalmente no llegaron al tan ansiado por Billy, último partido de la temporada, esto significó mucho más, pues dejó en evidencia a aquellos que se amarran a la tradición, buscando al mismo tiempo mantener su status en la élite, mostrando como todo evoluciona. Los Red Sox se fijaron en esta nueva forma de ver el deporte, y aunque el mismo Billy renunció a la posibilidad de ser su manager, quedándose en su ciudad para poder estar atento de su hija, el equipo de Boston decidió seguir igualmente este sistema con otros intérpretes, y solo 2 años después, lograron ganar la Serie Mundial, variendo a los Cardinals, rompiendo su racha de 84 años sin ganar ese último juego de la temporada.

And although they ultimately didn't make it to Billy's long-awaited final game of the season, it meant much more, as it exposed those who cling to tradition while simultaneously seeking to maintain their elite status, showing how everything evolves. The Red Sox took notice of this new way of seeing the sport, and although Billy himself gave up the possibility of being their manager, staying in his city so he could be attentive to his daughter, the Boston team decided to continue this system with other performers, and just two years later, they managed to win the World Series, beating the Cardinals, breaking their 84-year streak without winning that final game of the season.

Aunque las actuaciones estuvieron excelentes, pienso que lo que hace tan buena es el guión y la dirección, pues es una historia madura, todos los acontecimientos están bien ligados, que si cambiaríamos el deporte por la NBA o una liga random de fútbol, todo seguiría tendiendo el mismo sentido. La decisión final también fue bien manejada, ya que el único momento sentimental de la película se basa en la relación entre un padre y su hija, que toma la decisión de mantenerse con ella, rechazando un trabajo como manager general en los Red Sox, manteniéndose en su hogar y en el equipo que le dió su primera gran oportunidad.

While the acting was excellent, I think the script and direction are what make it so good. It's a mature story, and all the events are well-connected. Even if we swapped the sport for the NBA or a random football league, it would still have the same meaning. The final decision was also well-handled, as the film's only emotional moment is based on the relationship between a father and his daughter, who decides to stay with her, turning down a job as general manager of the Red Sox, staying at home and with the team that gave him his first big opportunity.

No por lo dicho anteriormente hay que restarle importancia a los actores, Brad Pitt hizo un trabajo soberbio, encaja en la historia y nos trasmite su sentir con pocas palabras, y aunque no estoy de acuerdo con su discurso, pues no creía que su trabajo fue excelso al no ganar el último juego de la temporada, y por ende, el campeonato, ya que soy creyente que los medios y las formas son iguales de importantes, pude empatizar con la decepción de su personaje. Otro que destacó mucho fue Jonah Hill, pues pude ver que es algo más que su típico papel de adolescente cansino, dando sobriedad al analista detrás del éxito de esos Oakland Athletics.

The above doesn't mean we should downplay the actors' importance. Brad Pitt did a superb job, fitting into the story and conveying his feelings with just a few words. Although I disagree with his speech, as I didn't think his performance was excellent in not winning the final game of the season and, consequently, the championship, since I believe that the means and the methods are equally important, I was able to empathize with his character's disappointment. Another who stood out a lot was Jonah Hill, as I could see that he is more than just your typical role as a tired teenager, lending sobriety to the analyst behind the Oakland Athletics' success.

En conclusión, me pareció una excelente película, muy buena para entender como ha avanzado el mundo del deporte, que cada vez se profesionaliza más, dejando de un lado las sensaciones, y muchas veces, las características cualitativas, por hechos más medibles o cuantitativas. Lo cierto, es que si todo se basará en eso, muchas de las grandes estrellas de la historia nunca hubieran tenido esa oportunidad que los inmortalizó en sus deportes, y en deportes como el fútbol, cada vez vemos menos talento, abriendo la puerta a la técnica y táctica, por lo que siento que un enfoque combinado de estas características deberían siempre mandar a la hora de tomar una decisión, pues desde mi percepción, a veces es más importante las formas que los hechos.

In conclusion, I thought it was an excellent film, very good for understanding how the world of sports has advanced, becoming increasingly professionalized, leaving aside sensations, and often, qualitative characteristics, in favor of more measurable or quantitative facts. The truth is that if everything were based on that, many of history's greatest stars would never have had the opportunity that immortalized them in their sports, and in sports like soccer, we see less and less talent, opening the door to technique and tactics. Therefore, I feel that a combined approach of these characteristics should always govern when making a decision, because in my opinion, sometimes forms are more important than facts.
