Film Review: Beloved Tropic | Forgetfulness in adulthood and being a carer. [ESP/ENG]

Hola amigos de Movies & Tv, espero estén muy bien. Hace poco me topé con una película que llamo mi atención, tanto la portada como el nombre resultaban interesantes sin haber leído de que trata como tal la película. Hay historias que realmente nos conectan con el drama y las vivencias de personas comunes que se ven a través del cine, deberían existir más historias como la de Beloved Tropic mostrando realidades desde una forma humana, real y con mensajes sumamente poderosos dentro de la misma historia. Les vengo a compartir mi reseña de esta película que veo no es tan conocida aún.

Hello, friends of Movies & TV, I hope you are all doing well. I recently came across a film that caught my attention. Both the cover and the title were interesting, even before I had read what the film was about. There are stories that really connect us with the drama and experiences of ordinary people as seen through cinema. There should be more stories like Beloved Tropic, showing realities from a human, real perspective and with extremely powerful messages within the story itself. I'm here to share my review of this film, which I see is not yet very well known.

Querido Trópico nos cuenta la historia de dos mujeres latinas, una llamada Mercedes (Jenny Navarrete) quien está embarazada y que busca un trabajo con urgencia para poder cubrir sus gastos y sacar el pasaporte para viajar a otro lugar donde pueda conseguir un mejor futuro. El trabajo que consigue es de ser cuidadora de la señora Ana (Paulina García) quien sufre de demencia y necesita más que nunca cuidados que otros como su familia no pueden permitirse darle. Al comienzo las cosas son un poco caóticas, en medio de las exigencias y la vida de lujos que lleva Ana y los problemas que traen su propia enfermedad, hacen que Mercedes tenga que enfrentarse a una persona que merece ser cuidada y que a pesar de su enfermedad aún quedan rastros de haber sido una buena persona. Ambas están para apoyarse y tal vez cambiar su propia realidad.

Querido Trópico tells the story of two Latin American women, one named Mercedes (Jenny Navarrete) who is pregnant and urgently seeking work to cover her expenses and obtain a passport to travel to another place where she can find a better future. The job she gets is as a carer for Mrs Ana (Paulina García), who suffers from dementia and needs more care than ever, which others, such as her family, cannot afford to give her. At first, things are a bit chaotic. Ana's demands and luxurious lifestyle, combined with the problems caused by her illness, force Mercedes to deal with a person who deserves to be cared for and who, despite her illness, still shows signs of having been a good person. The two women are there to support each other and perhaps change their own reality.

Esta película dirigida por la directora panameña Ana Endara, muestra una historia de dos mujeres de distintas edades, diferentes clases sociales, que conectan de alguna manera desde la paciencia y el cariño mientras viven realidades que pueden afectar sus vidas de alguna forma. El ser cuidador es uno de los trabajos más sacrificantes y difíciles sobre todo cuando se trata de personas mayores, quienes requieren de amor y mucha paciencia, todo esto se lo sabe dar Mercedes, una mujer muy humilde que sin importar los maltratos o los momentos incómodos sabe cómo acompañar, sabe escuchar y sabe comprender lo que necesita Ana sin si quiera mediar palabras.

This film, directed by Panamanian director Ana Endara, tells the story of two women of different ages and social classes who connect in some way through patience and affection while living realities that may affect their lives in some way. Being a caregiver is one of the most demanding and difficult jobs, especially when it comes to elderly people, who require love and a lot of patience. Mercedes, a very humble woman, knows how to provide all of this. Regardless of mistreatment or uncomfortable moments, she knows how to accompany, listen, and understand what Ana needs without even saying a word.

El nombre de la película fue lo que me dejó pensando en que quiso dar a entender la directora, para mi es como darle un nombre al ambiente y los personajes que están en esta historia. Querido trópico podría referirse a los espacios de la amplia casa de Ana llena de mucha vegetación, donde pasa sus días entre recuerdos y olvidos, también la diferencia entre la forma de ver la vida y las cosas que les han tocado vivir a ambas mujeres, una con una vida muy simple y muy necesitada de dinero para poder mejorar su vida y la otra con la necesidad de ser cuidada en los momentos más difíciles como cuando olvida quien es Mercedes a pesar de verla todos los días o cuando descubre un secreto de esta y simplemente producto de la propia enfermedad lo toma como una broma, haciendo que el lazo fraternal entre ambas crezca.

The name of the film made me wonder what the director wanted to convey. For me, it's like giving a name to the setting and the characters in this story. Dear Tropic could refer to the spaces in Ana's large house, filled with lush vegetation, where she spends her days between memories and forgetfulness, as well as the difference between the way the two women see life and the things they have had to go through. one with a very simple life and in great need of money to improve her life, and the other with the need to be cared for in the most difficult moments, such as when she forgets who Mercedes is despite seeing her every day, or when she discovers a secret about her and, simply as a result of her own illness, takes it as a joke, causing the sisterly bond between the two to grow.

Las actuaciones de ambas estuvieron impecables, Jenny Navarrete refleja a una mujer muy de escasos recursos, viviendo con una situación como lo es un embarazo en soledad, mientras tiene que ganarse la vida de cualquier manera, además que siempre tiene una forma en su mirada de una mujer que ha vivido muchas vidas en una sola, tal vez producto de la misma precariedad en la que creció y esto la hace ser más empática con Ana y su condición de salud. Por otro lado, Paulina García muestra de forma casi perfecta como es tener una enfermedad degenerativa, las emociones cambiantes que van surgiendo, el dolor que se siente al olvidar y luego recordar algo que era importante para ella, la actitud con la que se enfrenta a la enfermedad y el cariño que le toma a Mercedes como si fuera una niña incluso cuando ella ya va a terminar su trabajo.

Both actors gave flawless performances. Jenny Navarrete portrays a woman of very limited means, living through a situation such as an unplanned pregnancy while having to earn a living any way she can. She also has a look in her eyes that suggests she has lived many lives in one, perhaps as a result of the precarious circumstances in which she grew up, and this makes her more empathetic towards Ana and her health condition. On the other hand, Paulina García shows almost perfectly what it is like to have a degenerative disease, the changing emotions that arise, the pain of forgetting and then remembering something that was important to her, the attitude with which she faces the disease and the affection she feels for Mercedes as if she were a child, even when she is about to finish her work.

Es una historia de esas que suceden más de lo que parece en la vida real, tener un familiar con una condición de salud como la demencia es algo que te deprime a ti y más al adulto mayor. En esta película se muestra de manera real, que entre dos personas que viven realidades difíciles también se pueden crear lazos importantes a pesar del olvido. Me gusta que sea una película latinoamericana y que den más demostración de las buenas historias que pueden crear o escribir personas latinas, es una gran película que sin muchos detalles logra abarcar el tema social y sentimental de una forma en la que te atrapa la historia, me sentí enternecida en muchos momentos sobre todo porque se lo que es cuidar de alguien que ya no es la misma persona aunque por fuera de vea como ella misma. Les recomiendo mucho esta película si les gustan este tipo de historias 🤗

It's one of those stories that happens more often than it seems in real life. Having a family member with a health condition such as dementia is something that depresses you and even more so the elderly person. This film shows in a realistic way that two people living difficult realities can also form important bonds despite forgetfulness. I like that it is a Latin American film and that it further demonstrates the good stories that Latin American people can create or write. It is a great film that, without going into too much detail, manages to cover social and emotional issues in a way that draws you into the story. I was moved at many points, especially because I know what it is like to care for someone who is no longer the same person, even though on the outside they look the same. I highly recommend this film if you like this type of story.
