Ready or Not 2: Here I Come - Movie Review [ES - EN]

Posiblemente se me haga extraño que se espere mucho tiempo para que una película exitosa tenga una secuela y más cuando es una producción que sea parte del género de terror y comedia, pero el éxito que consiguieron Bettinelli-Olpin y Tyler Gillett con "Ready or Not", película estrenada en 2019, los mantuvo ocupados por varios años y, justamente al momento de terminar abruptamente su relación con la franquicia de "Scream", se presentó la oportunidad de continuar la historia de una novia que enfrentó en un juego infernal a su nueva familia en su noche de bodas.

It might seem strange to me that it takes so long for a successful movie to get a sequel, especially when it’s a horror-comedy, but the success achieved by ** Bettinelli-Olpin** and Tyler Gillett achieved with “Ready or Not”—a film released in 2019—kept them busy for several years, and just as their relationship with the “Scream” franchise came to an abrupt end, the opportunity arose to continue the story of a bride who faced her new family in a hellish game on her wedding night.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come es una continuación directa de los eventos sucedidos en el primer film; en esta oportunidad, la novia, "Grace MacCaullay", descubrirá que el juego no ha terminado y todavía falta por enfrentar a nuevos participantes y, para esta nueva ocasión, ella tendrá de apoyo a su hermana, con quien no tiene una excelente relación, pero cualquier diferencia deberá quedar atrás si quieren sobrevivir a una nueva infernal cacería. Esta no es de las películas que más me motivaba ver y eso se debió a que el primer film no alcanzó las altas expectativas que tenía y, a pesar de no considerarla como una mala película, mi sensación fue que pudo ser mejor y es por eso que en esta oportunidad fui precavido y me hizo generar una única expectativa, la cual era que fuese divertida.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is a direct sequel to the events of the first film; this time, the bride, “Grace MacCaullay,” will discover that the game isn’t over and she still has to face new participants. For this new challenge, she’ll have the support of her sister—with whom she doesn’t have the best relationship—but they’ll have to put any differences aside if they want to survive another hellish hunt. This wasn’t one of the movies I was most eager to see, mainly because the first film didn’t live up to my high expectations. Although I don’t consider it a bad movie, I felt it could have been better—which is why I approached this one with caution and set only one expectation: that it would be fun.

Así como sucedió con el primer film, es notorio que el presupuesto de esta secuela sería bajo; creo que uno de los puntos positivos que ofrece ahora esta franquicia de dos películas es que tiene ese rango de ser de "clase B", y esto lo digo por las simples escenografías, tanto de interiores como de exteriores, y el uso del CGI y demás efectos para determinadas escenas, pero creo que hay otro factor más y es que el trabajo de ambos directores es mucho más simple que en la anterior película: la presentación de nuevos personajes es rápida, las muertes no son de gran impacto y no hay originalidad o la necesidad de crear impacto en ninguna de las escenas. Este fue el problema que encontré en la primera película y que lamentablemente se repite en este film.

Just as with the first film, it’s clear that this sequel’s budget would be low; I think one of the positive aspects this two-film franchise now offers is that it has that “B-movie” feel, and I say this because of the simple sets—both interiors and exteriors—and the use of CGI and other effects for certain scenes, but I think there’s another factor as well: the approach taken by both directors is much simpler than in the previous film. New characters are introduced quickly, the deaths aren’t particularly shocking, and there’s no originality or attempt to create impact in any of the scenes. This was the problem I found in the first film, and unfortunately, it’s repeated here.

El guion escrito por Guy Busick y Christopher Murphy se basó más que nada en explorar los lazos familiares; primeramente está el uso de la sátira para explorar el comportamiento de personas consideradas de la alta sociedad, en donde su liderazgo está regido por la imposición del más apto o más fuerte; justamente esa disyuntiva escondida por una falsa relación de hermandad genera momentos divertidos, predecibles, pero entretenidos, y eso me pareció un factor positivo y que contrarresta cómo experimentan los lazos familiares las dos protagonistas de esta secuela; existe cierta empatía, la relación de ambas es de protección de la hermana mayor, en donde existe una nula explicación de actos, lo cual conlleva un no entendimiento por la otra parte y eso genera una correcta separación o entendimiento de dos personajes que deben unirse para sobrevivir. Esa idea me gustó del film y, aunque creo que se repitió en varias escenas, de igual manera me pareció más que adecuada para esta historia.

The screenplay written by Guy Busick and Christopher Murphy focused primarily on exploring family ties; first and foremost is the use of satire to examine the behavior of people considered part of high society, where leadership is governed by the rule of the fittest or strongest; it is precisely this dilemma, hidden behind a false bond of sisterhood, that generates moments that are funny, predictable, yet entertaining—and I found that to be a positive element that contrasts with how the two protagonists of this sequel experience their family ties; There is a certain empathy; their relationship is one of the older sister’s protection, where there is no explanation for her actions, leading to a lack of understanding on the other’s part—and this creates a natural separation or understanding between two characters who must unite to survive. I liked that idea in the film, and although I think it was repeated in several scenes, I still found it more than appropriate for this story.

Ready or Not funcionó como un film único; en mi opinión, fue una historia concreta con un final bastante adecuado y seguramente una continuación pudiera haber funcionado mejor si se hace de manera casi inmediata, pero sus directores y protagonista tuvieron el éxito necesario para tener varios años ocupados y apesar de no contar con un gran exito en la actualidad, posiblemente les hizo regresar a esta historia, de igual manera me pareció genial que se haya realizado una secuela y que pudieran contar tanto con los directores, guionista y en especial con Samara Weaving, quien tiene todo para seguir siendo una gran "Final Girl", lo ha demostrado en otras producciones, tiene la belleza, la actitud, el carisma, sus expresiones fáciles son de lo mejor y nuevamente es ella lo más importante de esta película y a pesar de que el final de esta película es igual de concluyente que el anterior, espero que ahora exploren otra faceta de Grace o de "Faith", hermana de Grace, interpretada por Kathryn Newton, otra actriz que sabe liderar este tipo de producciones en donde el terror y la comedia se unen. Me gustó "RoN2: Here I Come" me pareció una película bastante divertida, aunque me hubiera gustado que fuera más corta, pero es bastante entretenida, cumple con ser una correcta y sí, una buena continuación.

Ready or Not worked as a standalone film; in my opinion, it was a self-contained story with a fairly satisfying ending, and a sequel might well have worked better if it had been made almost immediately, but its directors and lead actress achieved enough success to keep them busy for several years, and even though the film isn’t a huge hit right now, that success may have prompted them to return to this story. That said, I thought it was great that a sequel was made and that they were able to bring back the directors, the screenwriter, and especially Samara Weaving, who has everything it takes to continue being a great “Final Girl”—she’s proven it in other productions. She has the beauty, the attitude, the charisma, her natural expressions are top-notch, and once again, she’s the most important part of this movie. And even though the ending of this film is just as conclusive as the previous one, I hope they’ll now explore another facet of Grace or of “Faith,” Grace’s sister, played by Kathryn Newton—another actress who knows how to lead this kind of production where horror and comedy come together. I liked “RoN2: Here I Come”—I thought it was a pretty funny movie, although I would have liked it to be shorter. Still, it’s quite entertaining; it does a good job of being a solid—and yes, a good—sequel.
