Honestly, you have no idea how long I've been wanting to do this special to talk to you about these great comedy classics where Jim Carrey does his thing, as always. Some of you who have been reading me for a long time may have noticed that I'm a big fan of this actor and his great career in the world of cinema. From his unforgettable and famous comedy films that made him famous to those lesser-known films where he gave us a more than masterful performance, thus escaping the comedy genre. However, we're here for the comedy, so let's start with this classic from the 90s.

Among the first films he worked on that brought him fame is this comedy gem. Along with The Mask (which I also reviewed), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is one of the most successful films Jim Carrey worked on at that time. Much of the success and acclaim he received was thanks to his unforgettable performance. In my case, this was one of those movies that was always on cable TV at home every week. Ever since I was little, I always watched his movies and had a lot of fun. That's how my taste for this kind of absurd humor became part of my life, even now.

Sinceramente, no tienen ni idea de cuánto tiempo he estado deseando hacer este especial para hablarles de estos grandes clásicos de la comedia donde Jim Carrey hace de las suyas, como siempre. Posiblemente alguno de los que me leen desde hace tiempo se habrá dado cuenta de que soy un gran fan de este actor y de su gran carrera en el mundo del cine. Desde sus inolvidables y famosas películas de humor donde todo el mundo lo conoció hasta esas cintas poco conocidas donde nos dejó una interpretación más que magistral, escapando así del género de la comedia. Sin embargo, aquí estamos es por el humor nomás, así que empecemos con este clásico de los 90.

De entre las primeras películas en las que trabajó y que lo llevaron a la fama se encuentra esta joya de la comedia. Junto con The Mask (la cual también le hice una reseña), Ace Ventura: Pet Detective es de las películas más exitosas en las que Jim Carrey trabajó en aquella época. Gran parte del éxito y el galardón que recibió fue gracias a su inolvidable actuación. En mi caso, esta era de esas películas que nunca faltaban por transmitirse en casa, por la televisión por cable cada semana. Desde que era pequeño siempre veía sus películas y me divertía muchísimo. Es así como mi gusto por este tipo de humor absurdo se volvió parte de mi vida, incluso hasta ahora.

I consider Jim Carrey one of my favorite comedy actors, and this will be confirmed in the special feature I will be dedicating to him over the next few weeks. But more than just a good actor, I also believe that Carrey is one of those geniuses who managed to influence an entire generation with his hilarious performances and memorable characters. Ace Ventura is one of them, one of the first characters that critics came to detest and audiences came to love for his uniqueness, humor, and unbearable nature. But before talking more about this unforgettable character, I would like to highlight something about the plot of this detective film with its intermingled black humor and absurdity.

Many would expect to see a completely nonsensical comedy, and that's how it seems at first. After the classic and unforgettable introduction to Ace Ventura, we soon discover that he is just one of those second-rate detectives who make a living doing favors for people, rescuing animals and the like. It's all laughs and mockery for our protagonist, until something unpleasant happens to the Miami American Football team: their mascot, a dolphin named Snowflake, is stolen. As an animal is involved in this case, someone recommends that the team's bosses hire Ace Ventura, something they may regret later on.

Considero a Jim Carrey como uno de mis actores de comedia favoritos y eso se puede confirmar con este especial que le dedicaré durante las siguientes semanas. Pero más que un buen actor, también opino que Carrey es de esos genios que lograron influenciar a toda una generación con sus divertidas interpretaciones y personajes memorables. Ace Ventura es uno de ellos, de los primeros personajes que tanto la crítica llegó a detestar como la audiencia llegó a amar por lo único, gracioso e insoportable que es. Pero antes de hablar más sobre este inolvidable personaje, quisiera destacar algo sobre la trama esta película detectivesca con humor negro y absurdo entremezclado.

Muchos esperarían ver una historia de comedia sin sentido alguno y así parece serlo al principio. Luego de la clásica e inolvidable introducción que nos dan de Ace Ventura, descubrimos luego que es solo uno de esos detectives de segunda que viven de hacerle favores a la gente de rescatar animales y cosas por el estilo. Todo es risas y burlas para nuestro protagonista, hasta que ocurre un suceso desagradable para el equipo de Fútbol Americano de Miami: robaron a su mascota, un delfín llamado Snowflake. Como en este caso está involucrado un animal, alguien le recomienda a los jefes del equipo que contraten a Ace Ventura, algo de lo que posiblemente se arrepentirán más adelante.

From this point in the story, we see a series of events in which our distinguished and self-proclaimed "animal detective" attempts to solve the case by following various clues that lead him to the possible culprits of Snowflake's theft. Those who have seen the film will surely have been thoroughly entertained by Ace Ventura's crazy, unethical, and extravagant way of doing things. It's normal for many to label him crazy and even a clown when they see him acting in such a flamboyant way among other officers and characters that we meet throughout the film. But something that not many people realized is that Ace isn't the only crazy one here.

By focusing our attention on the protagonist, we probably ignore certain details about the other characters around Ace Ventura. The most relevant case is the main culprit behind Snowflake's theft, whose identity we finally discover, along with what he has been doing from the beginning. In order to avoid spoilers for anyone reading this who hasn't seen this funny movie yet, I won't give any more details about this character. I will only say that it is clear that he has serious mental problems, as well as certain inclinations that are revealed at the end of the third act. He could easily be classified as an antagonist who is just as crazy as the protagonist, if not crazier.

A partir de este punto de la historia vemos una serie de sucesos en donde nuestro distinguido y autoproclamado ”detective de animales” intenta resolver el caso siguiendo varias pistas que lo llevan hacia los posibles culpables del robo de Snowflake. Para los que han visto la película seguramente se habrán entretenido bastante debido a las locuras y la forma tan poco ética y extravagante que tiene Ace Ventura de hacer las cosas. Es normal que muchos lo tilden de loco y hasta de payaso al verlo desenvolverse de manera llamativa entre otros oficiales y personajes que vamos conociendo a lo largo de la cinta. Pero algo que no muchos llegaron a darse cuenta es que Ace no es el único loco aquí.

Seguramente al centrar la atención hacia el protagonista, ignoramos ciertos detalles de los demás personajes que hay alrededor de Ace Ventura. El caso más relevante es el culpable principal del robo de Snowflake, quien al final descubrimos su identidad y lo que ha estado haciendo desde el principio. Para no darles spoilers a algún random que lea esto y que no haya visto esta graciosa película hasta ahora, no daré más detalles de dicho personaje. Solo diré que está claro que posee serios problemas mentales, además de ciertas inclinaciones que se van revelando en el cierre de su tercer acto. Fácilmente podría catalogarse como un antagonista igual o hasta más loco que el mismo protagonista.

Other than that, there isn't much else to highlight about the other characters, beyond appearing to be "normal" people when each one has their own problems and ways of thinking that are different from those of a normal person. Another interesting point to highlight about this film is the themes it deals with. Apart from animal abuse, we can also see certain references to psychological problems in professional players, animal trafficking among millionaires, and the classic prejudice that people receive for being different. Ace Ventura can be many things, even one of the most detestable characters Jim Carrey has played in his entire career.

But beyond everything that can be thought and said about this character, it should also be noted that he is someone who is honest and has good reasons for doing what he does. However, I am not going to defend, let alone praise, Ace Ventura, as he also represents many things that, even today, many people criticize. What I will say is that he was one of the main characters who became part of my childhood and adolescence. I admit that I even imitated many of his gestures and facial expressions. But this is more because of the actor Jim Carrey than the character himself. He gave one of the most striking and funny performances ever seen.

De resto, no hay mucho más que destacar de los demás personajes, más allá de aparentar ser gente “normal” cuando cada uno tiene sus problemas y formas de pensar distintas a la de alguien normal. Otro punto interesante a destacar de esta película son los temas que trata, aparte del maltrato animal, también podemos ver ciertas referencias a problemas psicológicos en jugadores profesionales, tráfico de animales entre millonarios y el clásico prejuicio que recibe la gente por ser diferente. Ace Ventura puede llegar a ser muchas cosas, hasta incluso llegar a ser de los personajes más detestables que Jim Carrey ha interpretado en toda su carrera.

Pero más allá de todo lo que se puede pensar y decir acerca de este personaje, también hay que destacar que es alguien honesto y con buenos motivos para hacer lo que hace. Igualmente, no pienso defender ni mucho menos alabar a Ace Ventura ya que representa también muchas cosas que, aún al día de hoy, mucha gente critica. Lo que sí diré es que fue uno de los principales personajes que llegó a formar parte de mi infancia y adolescencia. Admito que hasta llegué a imitar muchos de sus gestos y expresiones faciales. Pero ya esto es más por el actor Jim Carrey que por el personaje como tal. El mismo llegó a realizar una de las actuaciones más llamativas y graciosas que se pueden encontrar.

As for the humor we see throughout this film, we must first remember that the 90s were a different era. While I am a little surprised by the type of humor that was used back then, I won't deny that it was also part of my entire life. That's why, and because of so many films with dark and stale humor that I've seen since I was a child, I now have this twisted sense of humor. I'm not going to justify myself by saying that it's the best type of comedy there is, as that's up to each person to decide. I'll just say that, personally, I liked it a lot, especially because Jim Carrey gives it that special touch that makes every joke, every reference, every Easter egg, and every obscene scene in this film a complete laugh riot.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspects of this film. It was produced with a budget of no less than $15 million. Despite the decades that have passed, I consider it one of the comedy films that has aged best over time. It has a very appealing style of photography and direction, especially when Jim Carrey uses them to give us unforgettable scenes. The same goes for the practical effects and makeup, especially with the shark in the big pond. The sound effects are very well added, but nothing remarkable compared to its rock 'n' roll soundtrack. In short, here's a comedy classic that's worth remembering.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the comedy genre.

En cuanto al humor que vemos a lo largo de esta película hay que recordar primero que los 90 eran otras épocas. Si bien me sorprende un poco el tipo de humor que se manejaba en aquel entonces, no voy a negar que dicho humor formó también parte de mi vida entera. Es por eso y por tantas películas con humor negro y rancio que he visto desde pequeño que tengo este humor roto de ahora. No voy a justificarme diciendo que es el mejor tipo de comedia que existe, ya eso queda a consideración de cada persona. Solo diré que, en lo personal, me gustó bastante, sobre todo porque Jim Carrey le da ese toque especial para hacer que cada chiste, cada referencia, cada easter-egg y cada escena obscena de esta película se vuelva una completa carcajada.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película. Con no menos de 15 millones de dólares fue que se llegó a producir esta cinta. A pesar de las décadas, considero que es de las películas de comedia que mejor han envejecido con el tiempo. Tiene un estilo de fotografía y dirección que agrada bastante, sobre todo cuando Jim Carrey hace uso de las mismas para darnos escenas inolvidables. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos prácticos y el maquillaje, sobre todo con la parte del tiburón en el gran estanque. Los efectos de sonido están muy bien agregados, pero nada destacable en comparación con su banda sonora rocanrolera. En fin, aquí les dejo un clásico de la comedia que vale la pena ser recordado.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia.
