The Cable Guy (1996) | Nattosheru Review [ENG/SPA]

There are a number of comedy films starring Jim Carrey that are favorites among many viewers. I recently reviewed some of them, so you are probably familiar with them. However, outside of this list of audience favorites, there is always one that is understandably overlooked. The Cable Guy is a little-known and somewhat underrated gem that was released during Jim Carrey's golden age. Unlike many who claim to be fans of this great actor, I remember it from when I was a kid and used to watch it all the time on cable TV.

Although this film is a comedy, it is not in the same style of humor as the other films. While popular classics such as The Mask and Dumb and Dumber have some dark comedy, The Cable Guy delves much deeper into this subgenre, giving the story and characters a much colder and more dramatic tone. That's why many people weren't convinced by what they saw in this film, especially because of its third act and the abrupt change at the end. However, that doesn't take away from the interesting message it seeks to convey, especially in my case, as I feel quite familiar with loneliness and heavy cable TV consumption since I was a child.

Hay una cierta cantidad de películas de comedia que son de la preferencia de muchos en cuanto se trata de Jim Carrey, algunas de ellas ya les he hecho una reseña hace poco así que seguramente también las conocen. Sin embargo, fuera de esta lista preferida por el público, siempre queda ausente una que es comprensible que ni siquiera la recuerden. The Cable Guy es una joya poco conocida y a la vez bastante infravalorada que se estrenó en aquella época dorada de Jim Carrey. A diferencia de muchos que afirman ser fans de este gran actor, yo sí la recuerdo desde que era un niño y la veía siempre por la televisión por cable.

Esta película, si bien es de comedia, no es del mismo estilo de humor que poseen las otras cintas. Mientras que clásicos populares como The Mask o Dumb and Dumber poseen algo de comedia oscura, The Cable Guy profundiza mucho más dicho subgénero dándole un tono mucho más frío y dramático a la historia y a los personajes. Es por eso que a mucha gente no le terminó de convencer lo que vieron en esta cinta, sobre todo por su tercer acto y el cambio abrupto que posee al final. Sin embargo, eso no quita que sea interesante el mensaje que se busca transmitir, sobre todo en mi caso al sentirme bastante familiarizado con la soledad o el alto consumo de la televisión por cable desde pequeño.

Obviously, I didn't end up becoming someone like Ernie "Chip" Douglas, who at the beginning of the film is portrayed as simply an irresponsible and strange cable employee with a somewhat heavy sense of humor, but who over time proves to be annoying, insistent, harassing, and even calculating in a certain sense. After doing him the favor of installing cable for free, Steven can't refuse to hang out with Chip as he tells him about his past and how he grew up without a father, with only television as his "babysitter" at night. After this, the cable guy becomes quite overconfident, assuming that he is Steven's friend to the point of meddling in his personal life.

We definitely find ourselves with one of the best cases of madness ever seen, played by the great Jim Carrey, who, at that time, was already known for being a great comedian and a genius at playing funny yet annoying and unbearable characters. Remember when I told you that Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber was the most unbearable character Jim Carrey has ever played in his entire career? Well, now with The Cable Guy, it's very difficult for me to choose between Chip and the dumbest fool to decide which one is the worst. Although there is clearly a huge difference when you watch the latter film in its entirety, especially because of its ending.

Obviamente, no terminé convirtiéndome en alguien como Ernie “Chip” Douglas, quien al principio de la película se muestra como simplemente un empleado del cable irresponsable y extraño, con un humor un tanto pesado, pero que con el tiempo demuestra ser alguien molesto, insistente, acosador y hasta calculador en cierto sentido. Después de hacerle el favor de ponerle el cable gratis, Steven ahora no puede negarse a salir con Chip mientras le cuenta sobre su pasado y cómo creció sin padre y con solo la televisión como su “niñera” en las noches. Luego de esto, el chico del cable se vuelve bastante confianzudo al asumir que es amigo de Steven hasta tal punto de entrometerse en su vida personal.

Definitivamente nos encontramos con uno de los mejores casos de locura que nunca antes se ha visto, interpretado por el gran Jim Carrey quien, en aquel entonces ya era conocido por ser un gran comediante y un genio para interpretar personajes graciosos y a la vez pesados e insoportables. ¿Recuerdan cuando les dije que Lloyd Christmas de Dumb and Dumber era el personaje más insoportable que Jim Carrey ha hecho en toda su carrera? Pues ahora con The Cable Guy me es muy difícil escoger entre Chip y el tonto más tonto para saber cuál es el peor. Aunque claramente hay una enorme diferencia al solo ver esta última película completa, sobre todo por su final.

I want to confess right away that I have rarely empathized so much with a character who is, at the same time, as annoying and despicable as Chip Douglas. Honestly, it's hard for me to see him as the antagonist of this film at first because of his personal circumstances. As some of my readers will know, I also used to watch a lot of television when I was a child. So, in a way, I share that feeling of loneliness and false companionship that the bright screen with buttons conveys. Although I began to appreciate solitude more as I grew older, this was not always the case, although I did not end up becoming a bully like Chip, of course.

But enough about me, let's get back to the movie, which tells us how an architect's life changes completely with the arrival of the new cable guy. One thing that is clear and that this film teaches us is that it is NEVER a good idea to accept free things, especially if they look too expensive and illegal to be a "gift". Obviously, you don't even have to think about it if it's from a total stranger. Another important lesson we learn is not to depend too much on strangers, even if it's the cable guy. Nothing is free in this life, and everything has its consequences. But the most important lesson it teaches us is the meaning of friendship.

De una vez les quiero confesar que muy pocas veces he llegado a empatizar tanto con un personaje que, a la vez, sea tan pesado y despreciable como lo es Chip Douglas. De verdad, me es difícil verlo como el antagonista de esta película al principio debido a su caso personal. Como ya algunos de los que me leen siempre sabrán, yo también solía ver mucho la televisión desde pequeño. Así que de cierto modo comparto ese sentimiento de soledad y falsa compañía que transmite esa pantalla brillante y con botones. Si bien ya de grande fue que empecé a apreciar más la soledad, no siempre fue el caso, aunque tampoco terminé siendo un acosador como Chip, claro.

Pero basta de hablar sobre mí y sigamos hablando de la película, la cual nos cuenta cómo la vida de un arquitecto cambia por completo con la presencia del nuevo chico del cable. Algo que sí es claro y que nos enseña esta cinta es que NUNCA es bueno aceptar cosas gratis y menos si se ven bastante costosas e ilegales como para ser un “presente”. Obviamente, no hace falta ni pensarlo siquiera si es de parte de un total desconocido. Otra lección importante que aprendemos es el no depender mucho de gente ajena, ni siquiera porque sea el chico del cable. Nada es gratis en esta vida y cada cosa tiene su consecuencia. Pero la lección más importante que nos enseña es el significado de la amistad.

One thing I disagree with Chip about, among all the crazy things he does in this movie, is the fact that he manipulates and controls Steven so that he ends up being his friend in the end. When Steven says no, everything goes from bad to worse. No cause justifies any wrongdoing; everything you do can have an adverse effect that will always be beyond your control. That's why we must accept whatever we receive, whether good or bad. If you want to have a good friendship with someone you care about, you must first know your limits, not meddle in what doesn't concern you, and always give them space.

Another thing that this film makes very clear is the negative effect of watching too much television from a very young age. Chip's case is clearly quite exceptional, but it is still a very striking example of how a person can end up when they depend so much on television programs in their daily life. This character is literally a physical representation of total fanaticism; his entire life is a complete invention of his imagination, created purely from classic movies and television shows. The most striking thing about everything our crazy Chip does is his constant performances, phrases, and monologues.

Algo en lo que no estoy de acuerdo con Chip de entre todas las locuras que hace en esta película es el hecho de manipular y controlar a Steven para que este termine siendo su amigo al final. Cuando este le dice que no, todo cambia de mal a peor. Ninguna causa justifica ninguna mala acción, todo lo que hagas puede generar algún efecto contrario que siempre estará fuera de tu alcance. Es por eso que debemos aceptar cualquier cosa que recibamos, ya sea bueno o malo. Si quieres tener una buena amistad con alguien que aprecias bastante, debes primero conocer tus límites, no entrometerse en lo que no te incumbe y dar siempre un espacio.

Otra cosa que también nos deja bien claro esta película es el efecto negativo que genera el consumir mucha televisión desde muy joven. Claramente es un caso bastante excepcional el de Chip, pero aún sigue siendo un ejemplo muy llamativo de cómo puede terminar una persona al depender tanto de los programas de televisión en su vida diaria. Este personaje es literalmente una representación física del fanatismo total, su vida entera es una completa invención de su imaginación creada por puras películas clásicas y programas de televisión. Lo más llamativo de todo lo que hace nuestro loco Chip son sus constantes interpretaciones, frases y monólogos que hace.

Anyone old enough and knowledgeable enough about film and television can recognize the large number of references, Easter eggs, monologues, and interpretations that Chip makes throughout this film. Remember that we're talking about the cable guy, someone who has watched so much television that it's incredible he's not completely blind, although he did end up brain-dead. I don't deny that I am too, having watched a lot of television since I was a child, but I am well aware of the serious consequences of relying too much on it. The funny thing is that this film presents this as something that can even be harmful in the long term, and I think now is a good time to remember that.

I say this mainly because the entertainment media has recently evolved to the point predicted by the film itself. Today, we all have unlimited access to different forms of entertainment at our fingertips, without even having to turn on the TV. We can be glued to the TV or our phones all day without any problem. This has obviously caused an entire generation to become what it is today. So much so that thinking about the future based on this is more of a concern than an excitement for us. This film reminds us how bad it is to depend on entertainment media.

Cualquiera con bastante edad y conocimiento del cine y la televisión puede llegar a reconocer la gran cantidad de referencias, easter-eggs, monólogos e interpretaciones que realiza Chip a lo largo de esta película. Recuerda que estamos hablando del chico del cable, alguien que ha visto tanta televisión que es increíble que no vaya terminado ciego, aunque sí terminó loco del cerebro. No niego que yo lo esté al también haber visto mucha televisión desde pequeño, pero conozco bien las consecuencias graves de depender mucho de esto. Lo curioso es que esta película nos presenta esto como algo que puede ser incluso dañino a largo plazo y creo que ahora mismo es idóneo recordarlo.

Lo digo más que nada porque recientemente los medios de entretenimiento han llegado a evolucionar a tal punto como lo predijo la propia película. Actualmente todos tenemos acceso ilimitado a distintos medios de entretenimiento al alcance de una sola mano y sin necesidad de prender el televisor incluso. Podemos estar pegados al televisor o al teléfono todo el día sin problema alguno. Esto, evidentemente ha causado que toda una generación se haya convertido en lo que es ahora. Tanto es así que el pensar en el futuro en base a esto es más preocupación que ilusión lo que se nos ocurre. Esta película nos recuerda lo malo que es depender de los medios de entretenimiento.

Returning to the film, I really like how it maintains a dramatic and dark tone from start to finish, as if it were a psychological thriller. The fact that it is black humor gives us some idea of the purpose of much of the dialogue in this film. Things like dating, sex, and cheating are just some of the many topics it deals with. Here, too, you don't have to take everything that happens seriously, because otherwise you won't understand the joke or the humor behind each scene. It has its funny and unforgettable moments, but there are also moments that are very uncomfortable and even unbearable to watch.

In this case, Jim Carrey does an impressive job, not only for his role as the main antagonist but also for how well he works alongside other great actors of the moment such as Jack Black, Owen Wilson, and even Mathew Broderick, with whom he forms one of the most mismatched couples in cinema. There is something unusual and striking about this film. I don't know exactly what it is, but there is something that makes it so entertaining and fascinating at the same time. Perhaps it is because of its great cast of actors or because of its story and the messages it conveys. Whatever it is, it is certainly a film that is not for everyone.

Volviendo de nuevo a la película, me gusta mucho cómo de inicio a fin posee ese tono dramático y oscuro como si de un thriller psicológico se tratara. El hecho de que sea humor negro nos da cierta idea del objetivo de muchos de los diálogos que tiene esta cinta. Cosas como el noviazgo, el sexo y el engaño son solo algunos de los muchos temas que trata. Aquí tampoco tienes que tomarte en serio todo lo que sucede ya que de lo contrario no entenderás el chiste o el humor que hay tras cada escena. Tiene sus momentos graciosos y a la vez inolvidables, pero también hay momentos muy incómodos y hasta insoportables de ver.

En este caso, Jim Carrey realiza un trabajo impresionante, no solo por su papel de antagonista principal sino también por cómo llega a trabajar tan bien junto con otros grandes actores del momento como lo son Jack Black, Owen Wilson o hasta el mismo Mathew Broderick con el cual hace una de las parejas más disparejas de todo el cine. Hay algo inusual y llamativo que tiene esta película, no sé exactamente qué es, pero algo tiene que la hace tan entretenida y fascinante a la vez. Tal vez y sea por su grandioso elenco de actores o por su historia y los mensajes que esta transmite. Sea lo que sea es seguro que es una película que no está hecha para todo el mundo.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of The Cable Guy. Something that really impressed me about this film was finding out—as an adult—that its director is none other than Ben Stiller himself (for whom, incidentally, I also have a comedy special in store for the near future). This impression was caused by taking into account not only the script and the cast, but also the direction of this film. Visually, it is an impressive work for the 90s. The style of photography, fixed cameras, slow motion, and sequences are interesting. There is also its cold color palette and the use of light and shadow.

The shots we see mostly help to highlight each character as they should be, especially Jim Carrey, who is the one who attracts the most attention from the entire cast for obvious reasons. The sound effects are not bad either, especially when Carrey enters the scene and always uses them to his advantage. The soundtrack is also wonderful, mixing rock songs from the era with popular musical compositions from certain franchises for one unforgettable scene after another. But the best part is at the end, when the tension and drama mix with the absurdity of the scene. In short, here's another Jim Carrey movie that I recommend watching if you're a real fan of his.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the comedy genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene The Cable Guy. Algo que sí me impresionó de esta película fue el enterarme -después de grande- que su director es nada menos que el mismo Ben Stiller (a quien por cierto también le tengo preparado un especial de comedia para un futuro cercano). Dicha impresión fue causada al tener en cuenta no solo el guión y el elenco, sino también la dirección que posee esta cinta también. De manera visual es un trabajo impresionante para ser de los 90. El estilo de fotografía, cámaras fijas, cámaras lentas y secuencias son interesantes. También está su paleta de colores fríos y el uso de las luces y las sombras.

Los planos que vemos mayormente ayudan a resaltar a cada personaje como debe de ser, sobre todo al de Jim Carrey quien es el que llama más la atención de todo el elenco por obvias razones. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, sobre todo al momento de entrar a escena Carrey y utilizarlos siempre a su favor. La banda sonora es también otra maravilla, mezclando canciones rocanroleras de la época con composiciones musicales populares de ciertas franquicias para una que otra inolvidable escena. Pero lo mejor es al final, cuando la tensión y el drama se mezclan con lo absurdo de la escena. En fin, aquí está otra película de Jim Carrey que recomiendo ver si de verdad sos fan de él.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de la comedia.
