Rooster (series): This is my favorite new show at the moment

There are a ton of series released all the time and for the most part I rarely make it very far in them. We are spoiled for choice these days and therefore I am very quick to abandon a series if it even momentarily starts to lose momentum or starts to look like a re-hash of something else that is similar to it. There are loads of series that I walk away from really quick with the ones that come to mind right away being "The Pitt" and "Rise of the Merlin."

I'm not dedicated to one particular genre of series and will watch anything that is done well. It can be fantasy, action, romance, drama, you name it; I'm not fussy about the topic matter as long as it is done well.

I think that Steve Carell is a pretty fantastic actor that has done well to avoid being typecast after his career started off in a silly (but entertaining) way with things being comedies where he is a caricature of a real person. I have seen him in several serious films and you probably have as well. Foxcatcher put him on the map for a lot of people as a serious actor, but he has several other wonderful performances in a dramatic and serious role as well.

In Rooster we get to see a mostly dramatic film but it is interspersed with comedy of the highest order. It is funny not because of a laugh-track or cheap gag jokes, but more because of excellent writing and because they are painting a picture that kind of pokes fun at modern-day society and the PC nature of campuses without directly calling anything specific out.

Carell plays the role of Greg Russo, a best-selling author of romance/action books who has a daughter that works as an instructor at a university (a fictional one) and he turns up to help her out as she goes through a crisis in her marriage.

This aspect of the show is something that will give you "the feels" because for me at least, and I think most people, it is kind of nice to see family looking out for one another and doing whatever it takes to make things right.

Greg is there to help his daughter even though she is a college professor and feels as though she doesn't need anyone's help, even though she really does. In the meantime she also helps her father, who isn't as steadfast and stable as he thinks he is.

I think that a lot of us can relate to this aspect of the show due to the fact that we likely have these own things in our real lives.

As a long-term fan of Scrubs I was delighted to see John C. McGinley in a leading role and I think he was very careful to make sure that none of his "Dr. Cox" attributes ended up being in this character as well. He nails his role as the university president who recognizes the futility of a college education while simultaneously being in charge of exactly that.

The students at the university play a supporting, yet important role in this, and the stark divide that exists between teens and 20-somethings compared to older generations is on display regularly. This is something that I think both sides can relate to in real life because thanks to the internet, we have a great deal of differences between the two groups that exist in real life as well.

What really makes this show unique and wonderful though, is the exceptional writing. It has a sort of Modern Family sort of edge to it in that the jokes are subtle but very good and they aren't thrown in there for the sake of a one-liner gag cheap laugh the likes of which would happen in Friends or Big Bang Theory. I don't want to say it is more intelligent humor, but it certainly is better thought-out.

I don't think I am alone is feeling as though this series is exceptionally good because it has drawn the most viewers on HBO in the USA in ten years. Keeping in mind that there have been 2 Game of Thrones series that have premiered in that same timeframe and I think you can understand how appreciated this series is already, even though they only have 2 episodes currently released.

Should I watch it?

I think the only reason why you shouldn't watch this show is if English is not your native-language. I don't really speak other languages well enough to have a true opinion about this but I think a lot of the jokes could end up getting lost in translation. If English is your first language on the other hand, this show combines that feel-good aspect of a loving family, the frustration associated with work, college, and love life, as well as the importance of friendship in life. It is a wonderful experience all around but much of this comes from being able to understand what is being said.

The writing in this show is some of the best I have seen in quite some time and lately, in the age of hundreds of new series being released every year, this is pretty damn special.

This gets one of the most genuine recommendations that I have offered up in quite some time. Let's how they don't screw it up mid-season, as is often the case with a lot of (most of) the series that have ever been made.
