Flamin Hot (2023) review: Based on a false story.

As if another biographical film were needed in the middle of 2023 Disney Plus has just released "Flamin Hot", the directorial debut of Eva Longoria and a film that promises to tell us the story of how Richard Montañez supposedly invented the faming hot Cheetos, a variant of the popular snack that helped Frito Lays survive an economic crisis in the 1990s.

Unfortunately, although we are facing an efficient mixture of drama and comedy, Flamin Hot lacks any of the incentives that made works like Tetris, Air, or the surprisingly brilliant "Blackberry" end up winning our affection, starting with a thematic weakness that is not it benefits from the fact that Montañez's story has been denied on several occasions.

That's right, in the events that Richard Montañez himself describes in his book "A boy, a burrito and a cookie", who served as inspiration for the plot and the script of this film, where he assumes to have been the man of the idea, there are several inconsistencies in the narration that, mixed with some testimonies from frito lay employees over the years, totally distort their version of events.

I mention this because despite the fact that most of these films tend to take creative liberties on the events that happened in reality to boost their dramatic or humorous value, it is impossible to see with innocent eyes a work where the central character ( Who is still alive) created a narrative that only benefits him, camouflaged as a story of self-improvement in which a humble janitor manages to climb to the highest rung of a multinational company through pure and hard effort, despite systematic racism that he had to live since he was born.

And it's painful, because there are interesting ideas on paper that, under the correct approach, could work without the need to shape reality to the liking of its protagonist, who, by the way, started as a janitor and ended up as a top executive.

If, for example, we decided to approach the "supposed" creation of it with a little more ambiguity, we would not feel that we are dealing with a commercial cold, created with the purpose of humanizing a corporation.

Flamin Hot is funny, yes, but it doesn't make its case that it lacks a real identity, neither in its direction, nor in its music, nor in its photography, it portrays Mexican culture from the most generic perspective possible and in the end it leaves us a bit of a strange message, where the top of the mountain is the only valid place to end up.

Cómo si hiciera falta otra película biográfica en pleno 2023 Disney Plus acaba de estrenar "Flamin Hot", el debut directorial de Eva Longoria y un filme que promete narrarnos la historia de como Richard Montañez supuestamente inventó los faming hot Cheetos, una variante del popular snack que ayudó a Frito Lays a sobrevivir una crisis económica en los 90s.

Lastimosamente, aunque estamos frente a una mezcla eficiente de drama y comedia, Flamin Hot carece de cualquiera de los incentivos que hicieron que obras como Tetris, Air, o la sorprendentemente brillante "Blackberry" terminaran ganándose nuestro cariño, partiendo por una debilidad temática que no se ve beneficiada por el hecho de que en reiteradas ocasiones la historia de Montañez se hubiese desmentido.

Así es, en los eventos que el mismísimo Richard Montañez describe en su libro "A boy, a burrito and a cookie", quienes sirvieron como inspiración para la trama y el guión de esta película, en dónde el asume haber Sido el hombre de la idea, existen varias inconsistencias en la narración que, mezclados con algunos testimonios de empleados de frito lay a lo largo de los años desvirtúan totalmente su versión de los hechos.

Menciono esto porque a pesar de que la mayoría de estas películas suelen tomarse libertades creativas sobre los eventos que sucedieron en la realidad para repotenciar el valor dramático o humorístico de los mismos, es imposible ver con ojos de inocencia una obra en dónde el personaje central (Que sigue con vida) creó una narrativa que solo le beneficia a el, camuflada como una historia de superación personal en dónde un humilde conserje logra escalar al peldaño más alto de una empresa multinacional a punta de esfuerzo puro y duro, a pesar del racismo sistemático que tuvo que vivir desde que nació.

Y es doloroso, porque en papel existen ideas interesantes que bajo un enfoque correcto podrían funcionar sin necesidad de moldear la realidad a gusto de su protagonista, quien, por cierto, si empezó como un conserje y terminó como un alto ejecutivo.

Si por ejemplo, decidieramos abordar su "supuesta" creación con un poco de más ambigüedad, no sentiríamos que estamos ante un frío comercial, creado con el propósito de humanizar a una corporación.

Flamin Hot es divertida, si, pero no contribuye con su caso que carezca de una identidad real, ni en su dirección, ni en su música, ni en su fotografía, retrata la cultura mexicana desde la perspectiva más genérica posible y al final nos deja un mensaje un poco extraño, en dónde la cima de la montaña es el único lugar válido para terminar.
