Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) review: can you find the wolves in this picture?

Although it sounds a bit cliché to say it, Martin Scorsese is one of my favorite filmmakers, and it's probably one of the biggest reasons why I feel so passionate about movies.

It is not for nothing, throughout his long career this man has created an absurd number of timeless classics, which apart from that, demonstrate a level of versatility that many would like to have.

Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, or other more recent films such as The Wolf of Wall Street or the brilliant "The Irishman" are an example of the immeasurable talent of this New York man, who has left his permanent mark on the seventh art for some time.

Getting a little more personal, I must admit that the reason why I have always gravitated towards his works beyond their undeniable quality, is because of the way in which he usually portrays the world of criminals, mixing very well the coldness and the crudeness of them, with our convincing statements that although crime never pays, there will always be people willing to prove otherwise.

Curiously, a few days ago I took the trouble to revisit The Wolf of Wall Street, something I did slightly intimidated considering that my humble distorted memory of this film saw it as a hedonistic celebration of the life of a detestable man, and contrary to other works like Casino or Goodfellas that were much more moralistic, making their respective protagonists face the consequences of their own long-term ambition.

Ironic, don't you think? Because, as many of you know, Jordan Belfort is a person who exists, and more or less as Wolf of Wall Street shows us: he got his way in the end.

I mention all this because although comparisons are odious, it does not seem wrong to say that all these films are approaches to the same ideas seen from different angles (era, socioeconomic realities, cultures, etc.), which respond in an incredibly honest way to the our historical reality, and for this reason it is easy to find harmony between them.

And while I refuse to knock my true favorites (Goodfellas, the Irishman, and casino) off the pedestal, Killers of the Flower Moon could very well be the most bitter addition to this crime saga, something I celebrate and am excited about.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Deniro and Lily Gladstone, KOTFM shows us up close the story of the Osage tribe, a group of indigenous people who found oil on their lands at the beginning of the 20th century and became rich as a result.

The thing is that the Osage begin to be mysteriously murdered, and the FBI (newly founded) begins to investigate what is happening.

Throughout its 3 and a half hours of duration (which by the way are not at all heavy), we will be exposed to a large number of displays of excessive ambition, where men will do everything possible to strip the Osage of their wealth.

There is no aspect of Killers of the Flower Moon that has not been made the most of, starting from his brilliant performances (lead and supporting actors), as well as in terms of direction, photography and editing.

It is a dense and elegant film, which gives its characters room to breathe and is built little by little in a heartbreaking way, capable of capturing and hooking you with extreme ease.

It's one of my favorite movies of the entire year, and I have no doubt it will become another instant classic.

Aunque suene un poco cliché decirlo, Martin Scorsese es uno de los cineastas favoritos, y probablemente es una de las mayores razones por las cuales siento tantísima pasión por las películas.

No es para poco, a lo largo de su longeva carrera este hombre ha creado una cantidad absurda de clásicos atemporales, que aparte, demuestran un nivel de versatilidad que muchísimos desearían tener.

Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, u otras cintas mas recientes como The Wolf of Wall Street o la brillante "The Irishman" son una muestra del talento inmesurable de este hombre neoyorquino, quien dejó su huella permanente en el séptimo arte desde hace rato.

Poniéndome un poco más personal debo admitir que la razón por la que siempre he gravitado hacia sus obras más allá de la innegable calidad de las mismas, es por la forma en la que suele retratar el mundo de los criminales, mezclando muy bien la frialdad y la crudeza de los mismos, con nuestras contundentes de que aunque el crimen nunca paga, siempre habrán personas dispuestas a demostrar lo contrario.

Curiosamente, hace unos días me tomé la molestia de revisitar the Wolf of Wall Street, algo que hice ligeramente intimidado considerando que, mi humilde recuerdo distorsionado de este film la veía como una celebración hedonista a la vida de un hombre detestable, y contrario a otras obras como Casino o Goodfellas que resultaban mucho más moralistas, haciendo que sus respectivos protagonistas enfrentaran las consecuencias de su propia ambición a largo plazo.

Irónico, no lo creen? Puesto que, como muchos de ustedes sabrán, Jordan Belfort es una persona que existe, y más o menos como nos muestra Wolf of Wall Street: al final se salió con la suya.

Menciono todo esto porque a pesar de que las comparaciones son odiosas, no me parece desacertado decir que todos estas películas son aproximaciones a las mismas ideas vistas desde distintos ángulos (épocas, realidades socioeconómicas, culturas, etc), que responden de manera increíblemente honesta ante nuestra realidad histórica, y por esto mismo es fácil encontrar armonía entre ellas.

Y aunque me niego a bajar del pedestal a mis verdaderas favoritas (Goodfellas, the Irishman y casino), Killers of the Flower Moon bien podría ser la adición más amarga a esta saga criminal, algo que celebro y me emociona.

Protagonizada por Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Deniro y Lily Gladstone, en KOTFM se nos muestra de cerca la historia de la tribu Osage, un grupo de indígenas que encontraron petróleo en sus tierras a principios del siglo XX y se enriquecieron como consecuencia de esto.

La cuestión es que los Osage empiezan a ser asesinados misteriosamente, y el FBI (recién fundado) empieza a investigar que está ocurriendo.

A lo largo de sus 3 horas y media de duración (Que por cierto no se hacen nada pesadas), seremos expuestos a una gran cantidad de muestras de ambición desmedida, en dónde los hombres harán lo posible para despojar a los Osage de sus riquezas .

No existe un aspecto de Killers of the Flower Moon que no haya Sido aprovechado al máximo, partiendo desde sus brillantes actuaciones (actores principales y secundarios), como en términos de dirección, fotografía y edición.

Es una película densa y elegante, que le da espacio a sus personajes para respirar y se va construyendo poco a poco de forma desgarradora, capaz de atraparte y engancharte con extrema facilidad.

Es una de mis películas favoritas de todo el año, y no tengo dudas de que se convertirá en otro clásico instantáneo.
