The last century was full of events that marked history. Wars and scientific advances are the most notable, including achievements in medicine that saved lives, such as the first open-heart surgery performed on a baby. We know that every scientific method requires time and many experiments, but in cases of fatal diseases, there is not so much time, which is why some doctors took risks by making quantum leaps in medicine.
Open Heart is a film based on real events about the circumstances experienced by the doctors who discovered how to operate on the heart, an organ that had never been touched by any doctor before. Specifically, it recounts the challenges, injustices and passion of Vivien Thomas, a black man who suffered racial segregation. He is the hero of the story, who at the age of 20 had finished high school and had the dream of becoming a doctor. Working from a very young age, he had saved for seven years to go to university, but one day the bank where he had his savings went bankrupt and he lost everything.
With his carpentry skills, he was recommended to work in a laboratory assisting a surgeon. The job consisted of cleaning and feeding dogs that were used for scientific experiments by this doctor. Surrounded by books and medical instruments, he let himself be carried away by his passion and took advantage of every moment to read and take notes, catching the attention of his boss, who soon after appointed him as his assistant.
At that time, it was very difficult for a person of colour to get ahead, as opportunities were scarce. They had to sit at the back of buses and step aside on the streets to make way for white people, always nodding and bowing their heads in respect, greeting them even if the response was indifference, because they were ignored. These kinds of scenes caused me pain, anger and helplessness. Vivien Thomas, played by Yasiin Bey, had to endure social abuse because of his skin colour. He was a person who had been taught to be proud of his achievements, he had good self-esteem, but he understood social behaviour.
At first, working in that laboratory and learning from the doctor seemed like a good opportunity, so he put off his dream of becoming a doctor. He needed the job and had to start from scratch to save money again. He got married and started a family, so what began as an opportunity in that laboratory lasted for more than 12 years. He learned a lot, yes, and contributed exponentially to scientific research as well, but all the achievements and merits in medicine were exclusively for his boss. Not even a shadow of Vivien Thomas appeared anywhere.

El siglo pasado estuvo lleno de eventos que marcaron la historia. Las guerras y avances científicos son los más destacados, entre ellos los logros en medicina que salvaron vidas como la primera operación a corazón abierto realizada a una bebé. Sabemos que todo método científico requiere de tiempo y muchos experimentos, pero en casos de enfermedades mortales no se tiene tanto tiempo, por eso algunos médicos asumieron riesgos dando saltos cuánticos en la medicina.A corazón abierto es una película basada en hechos reales sobre las circunstancias que vivieron los médicos que descubrieron cómo operar al corazón, órgano que antes no había sido tocado por ningún médico. Específicamente narra los desafíos, injusticias y pasión de Vivien Thomas, un hombre de piel negra que sufrió la segregación racial, él es el héroe de la historia, quien a sus 20 años había terminado la preparatoria y tenía el sueño de ser doctor, trabajando desde muy pequeño había ahorrado por 7 años para ir a la universidad, pero un día el banco donde tenía sus ahorros se fue a la bancarrota perdiendo todo.
Con conocimientos de carpintería, fue recomendado para trabajar en un laboratorio apoyando a un cirujano. El trabajo consistía en asear y alimentar perros que servían de experimentos científicos para este doctor. Rodeado de libros e instrumentos de medicina, se dejó llevar por su pasión y aprovechaba cualquier momento para leer y tomar apuntes, llamando la atención de su jefe, quien al poco tiempo después lo nombró su ayudante.
En esa época era muy difícil para una persona de color progresar, ya que las oportunidades eran excusas, tenían que sentarse en la parte de atrás de los autobuses y apartarse en las calles para dar permiso a personas blanca, siempre asintiendo y bajando la cabeza en señal de respeto saludando aúnque la respuesta fuera la indiferencia, porque los ignoraban. Este tipo de escenas me causaron dolor, rabia e impotencia, Vivien Thomas personificado por Yasiin Bey, tuvo que soportar maltratos sociales por su color de piel, era una persona que había sido educada para sentirse orgulloso por sus logros, tenía buena autoestima, pero entendía el comportamiento social.
Al principio de estar trabajando en ese laboratorio y aprendiendo con el doctor pareció ser una buena oportunidad, por eso postergó su sueño de ser doctor, necesitaba el trabajo y tenía que comenzar de cero para volver ahorrar, se casó y empezó a formar una familia por eso lo que empezó como una oportunidad en ese laboratorio se prolongó por más de 12 años, aprendió mucho sí, aportó de forma exponencial a la investigación científica también, pero todos los logros y méritos en la medicina era exclusivamente para su jefe, ni las sombras de Vivien Thomas aparecían en ninguna parte.

They worked together for many years, saving the war wounded through their research on traumatic shock, until one day at a party at the mansion of Dr. Alfred Blalock, who was portrayed by Alan Rickman, and was Vivien Thomas's boss, a paediatrician presented a problem with babies who were born with heart failure and became cyanotic. Due to low oxygenation in their blood, they turned blue or purple, which was fatal. Vivien, who was at the party as one of the waiters, dared to join in the doctors' conversation, managing to get the doctor's attention.
The rest of the story is history: they successfully operated on a baby who was close to death, but Dr Alfred Blalock could not perform the operation without Vivien's presence and had to ask for permission to enter the operating theatre, as he was not a qualified doctor and many of the doctors who were witnessing the operation did not respect him because he was black. Vivien gave Dr Alfred Blalock instructions. It should be noted that until that moment, Vivien had only operated on dogs because that was what she was allowed to do in her research, but she was the one who had found the solution to all the problems.
Conclusions
The Blind Side is a biographical drama film released in 2004. Thanks to the direction, we feel as if we are in the last century, with images that maintain the vintage colour of the era and costumes and hairstyles that transport the viewer back to that time.
This film shows how the desire to do good can overcome any human barrier. Vivien Thomas became part of medical history alongside Dr. Alfred Blalock in achieving this feat, but in his case, Vivien suffered a life of limitations.
Vivien Thomas was a man who always respected himself and maintained his self-esteem. He knew his worth, which is why it hurt him when Dr Alfred Blalock never gave him any recognition during his press conferences. Although he did not want fame because he was a humble person, he would have liked his long-time colleague to reward him with some form of gratitude, but life took care of giving him his place.
Vivien Thomas taught us that following our passion will always bring us the happiness we long for. It does not matter if we do not receive financial or symbolic recognition; in the end, what is done with love returns with blessings. When I finished watching the film, I felt relieved. I am comforted that at the end of his life, Vivien received recognition. I recommend watching this film in English, which is titled 'Something the Lord Made'. Si es cierto que él disfrutaba de los descubrimientos que hacía y de lo que aprendía, no recibía ningún incentivó por tanto trabajo y esfuerzo, ni reconocimiento moral ni económicos, vivía en pobreza, por eso cuando se enteró de que su clasificación de trabajo era tipo 3 y cobraba igual que un empleado de mantenimiento se fue hacer sus segundos trabajos que eran de plomería y cualquier cosa para ganar dinero, como era una persona muy importante para su jefe este lo fue a buscar y logró que le subieran el sueldo, pero continuó siendo un médico sin título y sin honores.Trabajaron muchos años juntos, salvando a los heridos de la guerra por su investigación de shock traumático, hasta que un día en una fiesta en la mansión del Dr. Alfred Blalock quien fue caracterizado por Alan Rickman, y era el jefe de Vivien Thomas, una doctora pediatra presentó un problema de los bebés que nacían con un fallo en el corazón y se ponían cianóticos, por su poca oxigenación en sangre se ponen de color azul o morados siendo mortal. Vivien que estaba en esa fiesta como uno de los mesoneros, se atrevió a participar en la conversación de los doctores, logrando llamar la atención de la doctora.
Ya el resto del argumento es historia, lograron operar con éxito una bebé que le faltaba poco para morir, pero en esa operación el Dr. Alfred Blalock no pudo hacerlo sin la presencia de Vivien y tuvo que pedir permiso para que lo dejaran entrar en la sala quirúrgica, ya que este no era doctor titulado y muchos de los doctores que estaban presenciando la operación no lo respetaban por ser de color negro, Vivien le dicto las instrucciones a Dr. Alfred Blalock. Cabe destacar que hasta ese momento Vivien solo operaba perros porque era lo que se le permitía en su investigación, pero era quien había encontrado la solución a todos los problemas.
Conclusiones A corazón abierto es una película del género biography y drama publicada en el año 2004, gracias a la dirección podemos sentir que estamos en el siglo pasado, sus imágenes mantiene ese color vintage de la época, los vestuarios y peinados de los personajes también te llevan como espectador a experimentar esa época.
Esta película plantea cómo querer hacer el bien puede más que cualquier barrera humana. Vivien Thomas pasó a formar parte de la historia médica junto al Dr. Alfred Blalock, para lograr esta hazaña, pero en su caso Vivien sufrió una vida de limitaciones.
Vivien Thomas fue un hombre que siempre se respetó y mantuvo su autoestima, él sabía su valor, por eso le dolió cuando Dr. Alfred Blalock en medio de sus ruedas de prensas nunca le dio reconocimiento, aunque él no quería fama porque era una persona humilde si le hubiese gustado que su compañero de tantos años de alguna forma lo premiará con un agradecimiento, pero la vida se encargó de darle su lugar.
Vivien Thomas, nos enseñó que seguir nuestra pasión siempre nos dará la felicidad anhelada. No importa si no recibimos el reconocimiento económico o simbólico, al final lo que se hace con amor regresa con bendición. Cuando terminé de ver la película me sentí aliviada. Me reconforta que al final de su vida Vivien recibiera reconocimiento. Recomiendo ver esta película en inglés que se titula: “Something the Lord Made” en español la vi con el título: A corazón abierto.

The racism of that era makes me feel incredibly powerless. That someone as brilliant and talented as Vivien Thomas had to endure so much abuse just because of the color of his skin... it's unbelievable. It makes me angry to think how many talented people were denied the opportunity to make history. I'm very happy to read that at the end of his life he did receive the recognition he so deserved, even if it was belated. I'll make a note to watch it.
If it is very painful, I cannot imagine what I would have suffered had I been born in that country and era, since I am dark-skinned.
