Dance, like any artistic pursuit, demands effort and dedication. In ballet, although the audience sees glamour and grace in every movement on stage, behind the scenes there is pain and countless hours of rehearsal. Few people are willing to pay the price to achieve perfection.

It is with this behind-the-scenes effort that Pretty and Deadly begins, an action, horror and suspense film based on the experiences of a group of dancers who travelled from North America to Budapest, Hungary, to take part in a competition, never imagining they would have to fight for their survival.

Being a dancer is not synonymous with fragility, for this film shows quite the opposite: first, the rivalry that can exist among the dancers in a group because the soloist steals the limelight, and then the injuries and the training they endure through physical pain; this forges a strong character capable of facing the worst situations.

This group of dancers is made up of very different characters: there is the wealthy girl who has everything handed to her; the spoilt one; the one who works, lives alone and has a scholarship; and there is even a deaf-mute character in the group. If you look more closely at the physical features of these dancers, you’ll realise there’s an Asian girl, an Indian girl, a white girl and a black girl. It’s a diverse group that complements one another.

In the first part there are no signs of horror; everything happens as normal, but in the second part there is an unexpected twist when the bus crashes and they have to walk through the woods until they find shelter; that is when the cinematography and atmosphere change, and from then on all the scenes take place in a dark and eerie bar, a place curiously decorated with dancers’ dresses and ballet photos. This place is full of men dressed in a way that suggests they are gangsters.

To the girls’ relief—and my own as a viewer, heh heh heh—the bar’s owner and manager is a woman who used to be a famous dancer, but… well, rather than being a positive thing, this didn’t help them get out of their predicament. The dancers just wanted to leave and get to the audition on time, yet they were kidnapped and had to face all those men, becoming killers just to survive.

That’s when the blood starts to stain everything; the dancers used every resource at their disposal to fight and defend themselves; there were cruel, action-packed scenes that left me feeling desperate, as well as some scenes of black humour full of sarcasm that had me laughing out loud, such as the scene where a man starts torturing the protagonist with the intention of pulling out her toenails, which causes the young woman to burst into laughter; the man doesn’t understand her reaction and, amidst laughter, anger and irony, the dancer explains that her nails break constantly and that she pulls them out herself and dances with a smile. Implying that for her, that wasn’t torture. This scene was my favourite 😁😆, I loved it.

I enjoyed the mix of genres, the costumes and the impeccable make-up; the only thing that disappointed me a little was the ending—I didn’t like how it ended; however, it kept me entertained throughout the film; if I had to give it a score, it would be an 8 out of 10.

La danza como cualquier actividad artística requiere de esfuerzo y dedicación. En la danza clásica aunque en escena el espectador vea glamour y sutileza en cada gesto detrás de eso, hay dolor y muchas horas de ensayo. Son pocas las personas que están dispuestas a pagar el precio para lograr la perfección.

Con ese esfuerzo detrás de escena es que inicia lindas y letales, una película del género de acción, terror y thriller basada en las experiencias de un grupo de bailarinas que viajaron desde su país Norte América a Budapest, Hungría para participar en un concurso sin imaginar que tendrían que luchar para sobrevivir.

Ser bailarina no es sinónimo de fragilidad, pues en esta película se muestra todo lo contrario, primero la rivalidad que puede existir entre las bailarinas de un grupo porque la solista se roba todas las miradas y luego las lesiones y prácticas que realizan con dolor físico, eso construye un carácter fuerte capaz de enfrentar las peores situaciones.

Este grupo de bailarinas son personajes muy diferentes, está la chica que es adinerada que todo se lo dan; la consentida; la que trabaja, vive sola y es becada, incluso en el grupo hay un personaje que es sorda-muda, y si observas mejor los rasgos físicos de estas bailarinas te darás cuenta que hay una asiática, india, blanca y raza negra. Es un grupo diverso que se complementa.

En la primera parte no hay indicios de terror todo sucede de forma normal, pero en la segunda parte hay un giro inesperado cuando el bus se accidenta y tienen que caminar por el bosque hasta encontrar refugio, entonces es cuando la fotografía y ambiente cambia, a partir de allí todas las escenas ocurren en un oscuro y tenebroso bar, lugar que está curiosamente decorado con vestidos de bailarinas y fotos de ballet. Este lugar está lleno de hombres con un vestuario que hace pensar que son mafiosos.

Para la tranquilidad de las chicas y mía propia como espectadora je, je, je, la dueña y jefa del bar es una mujer que llegó a ser una famosa bailarina, pero... eso en vez de ser algo positivo no les ayudó a salir de apuros. Las bailarinas solo querían irse y llegar a tiempo a la audición, sin embargo las secuestraron teniendo que enfrentarse a todos esos hombres convirtiéndose en asesinas para sobrevivir.

Es cuando la sangre comienza a pintar todo, las bailarinas usaron todos sus recursos para pelear y defenderse, hubo escenas crueles y llenas de acción que me desesperaron también algunas escenas de humor negro llenas de sarcasmo, que me sacaron una carcajada, como la escena donde un hombre empieza a torturar a la protagonista su intención es arrancarle las uñas de los pies esto a la joven le da un ataque de risa, el hombre no entiende su reacción y entre risas, rabia e ironía la bailarina le explica que todo el tiempo se le parten las uñas y ella misma se las arranca y baila con una sonrisa. Dando a entender que para ella eso no era tortura. Esta escena fue mi favorita 😁😆, me encantó.

Disfruté la mezcla de los géneros, el vestuario, el maquillaje impecable lo único que me decepcionó un poco fue su parte final, no me gustó el cierre, sin embargo, me mantuvo entretenida toda la película, si tuviera que darle un puntaje sería 8 de 10.
