Recommendation Primate 🦧: if you like monkeys, don't watch this film. [Eng/Esp]

Hello, film lovers!

I hope you are all well. Today I'm here to talk to you about a film I saw a few days ago, which came up several times in videos and, as it was a horror film and I really like that genre, I decided to watch it. The film is called Primate.

This film is set in Hawaii, specifically in Oahu, and follows the story of Lucy, a young university student who returns home after being away for a while due to the loss of her mother. Lucy does not return alone, but with her best friend Kate and Kate's friend Hannah, even though the latter and Lucy detest each other.

Lucy has a younger sister named Erin and a deaf-mute father, Adam, a famous novelist, and the most eccentric member of that family, Ben, a chimpanzee, raised and trained by Lucy's mother, who was a linguist. And although everything seemed fine at first, chaos ensues when Ben is bitten by a mongoose infected with rabies, causing Ben's behaviour to gradually become aggressive, violent and even sadistic.

Well, this is an animal horror thriller, a genre that I haven't really seen much of since I saw Cujo when I was a child. This one stands out for its visual rawness; it doesn't skimp on the gore, so it's a very bloody film that resembles B-movie cinema or is B-movie cinema outright.

Here, they relied more on makeup and prosthetics, so there was a man acting like a chimpanzee trying to rip the face off a poor girl. The film quickly shifts from calm to violence, so there is constant tension. The tension was so intense that there was one scene in particular where I screamed and then laughed, because I mistook one of the characters for the chimpanzee and I was like, "Huh, when did he grow so big?", but it was funny.

There are some scenes that really made me laugh, like when some guys that Lucy and her friends met at the airport arrive at the house without knowing there was a killer chimpanzee there. Where one teases them, saying, "Who would be crazy enough to have a monkey?", and then the chimpanzee corners them on a bed and this character, despite having a blood-covered chimpanzee on top of them, says, "First ask me out on a date," and then the chimpanzee does what it did; it was pretty crazy.

The story has some inconsistencies, such as the fact that there is no rabies in Hawaii, and this is mentioned, so the mongoose that bit Ben travelled quite a distance, and some silly or rather reckless decisions made by some characters, specifically the father. In addition to a few other implausible aspects, there are still known cases of chimpanzees that are particularly violent and have done grotesque things, so the film uses that to heighten the horror.

Overall, the film delivers what it promises: a sadistic, intelligent, and brutal chimpanzee who psychopathically stalks a group of young people in a house in Hawaii. Honestly, there were some pretty brutal and bloody scenes that made the person I was watching it with, who is not familiar with the genre, scream and gasp several times. For my part, I liked it. It was entertaining, it delivers on its premise, and some moments were really crazy.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Hoy vengo a hablarles de una película que vi hace unos días, la cual me salió varias veces en videos y, como era de terror y me gusta mucho ese género, decidí verla. Esta película se llama: Primate.

Esta película se sitúa en Hawái, específicamente en Oahu, y sigue la historia de Lucy, una joven universitaria que regresa a casa después de irse un tiempo por la pérdida de su madre. Lucy no regresa sola, sino que lo hace con su mejor amiga Kate y la amiga de Kate, Hannah, siendo que esta última y Lucy se detestan.

Lucy tiene una hermana menor de nombre Erin y un padre sordomudo, Adam, un novelista famoso, y el integrante más excéntrico de esa familia, Ben, un chimpancé, criado y adiestrado por la madre de Lucy, quien era lingüista. Y aunque todo parecía bien al inicio, el caos se desata cuando Ben es mordido por una mangosta infectada con rabia, lo que hace que poco a poco el comportamiento de Ben se torne agresivo, violento y hasta sádico.

Bien, este es un thriller de terror animal, género que la verdad no es que vea mucho desde que vi Cujo cuando era niña. En esta se destaca la crudeza visual; no se escatima el gore, por lo que es una película muy sangrienta y que se asemeja al cine clase B o es clase B directamente.

Aquí se apostó más por maquillaje y prótesis, por lo que había un hombre actuando como chimpancé intentando arrancarle la cara a una pobre chica. En la película se pasa de calma a violencia rápidamente, por lo que hay tensión constantemente. Fue tanta la tensión que hubo una escena en particular en la que grité y después me reí, porque confundí a uno de los personajes con el chimpancé y yo estaba: “¿Ajá, cuándo creció tanto?”, pero fue chistoso.

Hay algunas escenas que, la verdad, me hicieron reír, como cuando llegan unos chicos que Lucy y sus amigas conocieron en el aeropuerto y que llegan a esa casa sin saber que había un chimpancé asesino. Donde uno se burla diciendo que “¿quién estaría tan loco para tener un mono?”, y que después el chimpancé lo acorrala en una cama y este personaje, a pesar de tener a un chimpancé bañado de sangre encima, dice “primero invítame a una cita”, para que después el chimpancé hiciera lo que hizo; fue bastante loco.

La historia tiene algunas inconsistencias, como que en Hawái no hay rabia y esto mismo se dice, por lo que la mangosta que mordió a Ben viajó bastante, y algunas decisiones tontas o más bien inconscientes que tomaron algunos personajes, en específico el padre. Además de algún que otro aspecto no creíble, aun así se sabe de casos de chimpancés que son particularmente violentos y han hecho cosas grotescas, por lo que la película usa eso para elevar el horror.
En general, la película ofrece lo que anuncia: un chimpancé sádico, inteligente y brutal que persigue como un psicópata a un grupo de jóvenes en una casa en Hawái.

Sinceramente, hubo escenas bastante brutales y sangrientas que la persona que estaba conmigo viéndola y que no está familiarizada con el género gritó y se sorprendió varias veces. Por mi parte, me gustó, fue entretenido, cumple su premisa y algunos momentos fueron muy locos.
