This week, the film "STRAW" premiered on Netflix, and although I'm not much of a drama watcher, I decided to watch it because of the lead actress, Taraji P. Henson, whom I know from the series Empire and the film Hidden Figures, among other productions that generally address racial themes, characters, or narratives relevant to the African-American community, adapted or updated according to the era of said productions, in a realistic or sincere way, in my opinion. And this use of the seventh art to raise awareness is something I greatly admire, and I can't help but mention that her performances are always magnificent.
So yes, I decided to watch "STRAW" because it had this great actress as its lead, and it was truly a success and a pleasure to see Taraji P. Henson shine again and carry the weight of this production.
Esta semana se estrenó la película "HARTA" por Netflix y aunque no soy muy de ver películas de drama, me decidí a verla por la actriz protagonista Taraji P. Henson a quien conozco por la serie Empire y la película Talentos Ocultos entre otras producciones que generalmente aborda temas raciales, personajes o narrativas relevantes para la comunidad afroamericana, adaptadas o actualizadas según la época de dichas producciones, de una manera realista o sincera, en mi opinión. Y esta utilización del séptimo arte para crear conciencia es algo que admiro mucho, y no puedo dejar de mencionar que sus actuaciones siempre son magníficas.
Así que sí, decidí ver "HARTA" por tener a esta gran actriz como su protagonista y realmente fue un acierto y un disfrute poder ver a Taraji P. Henson nuevamente brillar y soportar el peso de esta producción.
"STRAW" begins by letting us meet Janiyah (Taraji P. Henson) and her daughter Aria, a single mother who starts the day noticeably tired and very stressed by all the situations she has, starting with taking her to school and needs money to give Aria for her meals, she must pay the rent she is behind and her landlady threatens to throw her out on the street if she doesn't pay today. On the way she has an incident in the car with a policeman, she is fined and her job is taken away. At school she has problems with Arias and some Social Assistance officials take it away from her, then she loses her job, in short, all the situations Janiyah has only get more complicated, and we will see this woman overwhelmed by all the situations, escalate her problems and now find herself involved in what seems to be a bank robbery.
"Harta" comienza dejándonos conocer a Janiyah (Taraji P. Henson) y su hija Aria, una madre soltera que comienza el día con un notable cansancio y mucho estrés por lo todas las situaciones que tiene, comenzando por llevarla al colegio y necesita dinero para darle a Aria para sus comidas, debe pagar el alquiler que tiene atraso y su casera la amenaza con echar a la calle de no pagarle hoy mismo. En el camino tiene un incidente en el carro con un policía, la multan y se lo quitan. En el colegio tiene problemas con Arias y unas funcionarias de Asistencia Social se la quitan, seguidamente pierde su trabajo, en fin que todas las situaciones que tiene Janiyah solo se complican, y veremos a esta mujer sobrepasada por todas las situaciones, escalar sus problemas y ahora verse implicada en lo que parece un robo a un banco.
As I've told you before, I'm paying more attention to the Directors of the series or movies I'm watching, to get an idea of why I like them or not. From the Director of "Fed Up" Tyler Perry I've seen several of his productions such as Gone Girl and Don't Look Up and A Fall from Grace; And I have the same opinion about these works as she did with "Fed Up." It has good stories, with deep themes that she fails to give the depth they deserve, that gets lost in the details and doesn't give enough time to explore them.
I believe that the weight of the film "STRAW" fell entirely on the shoulders of Taraji P. Henson, and the weaknesses and inconsistencies in the style of its director Tyler Perry, and what I'm saying makes perfect sense. There were secondary characters who, although they influenced Janiyah's entire breakdown, were simply there to make things happen or to deliver their lines. There was no reasonable accompaniment at the acting level for Taraji.
Como ya les he dicho anteriormente, estoy prestando más atención a los Directores de las series o películas que estoy viendo, para tener una idea de por qué me gustan o no. Del Director de "Harta" Tyler Perry he visto varias de sus producciones como Perdida y No Mires Arriba y Una Caída en Desgracia; y sobre estos trabajos tengo la misma opinión de lo que hizo con "Harta", tiene buenas historias, con temas profundos que no logra darles la altura que merecen, que se pierde en los detalles y no da el tiempo suficiente para tratarlos.
Considero que el peso de la película "Harta" estuvo bajo la responsabilidad absoluta sobre los hombros de Taraji P. Henson, y las debilidades e inconsistencias sobre el estilo de su Director Tyler Perry, y lo que digo tiene todo el sentido. Hubo personajes secundarios que aunque incidieron en todo el colapso de Janiyah, ellos simplemente estaban ahí para que las cosas pasaran o decir sus líneas, no hubo un acompañamiento razonable a nivel de actuación con Taraji.
How can we justify the fact that the police officer, who empathized with the protagonist, played by actress Teyana Taylor, was heavily made up and wearing an absurd wig throughout the entire film? She spent from morning to night following the situation, outside the bank, talking to various people, and yet she arrived with all the lipstick in the world as if it were a beauty pageant.
The actors in the supporting characters, like the police and the FBI, gave performances as if they were in a bad play. The robbery where Janiyah is caught in the middle, when she goes to work to collect her check, was absurdly acted. All these details speak time and again to what the director has done time and again in the productions I've seen, for example.
¿Cómo justificar que la policía que tuvo empatía con la protagonista, personificada por la actriz Teyana Taylor, estuviese toda la película súper maquillada y con una peluca absurda? Ha pasado desde la mañana hasta la noche siguiendo la situación, afuera del banco, hablando con varias personas, y aún así llegó con todo el labial del mundo como si se tratase de un Concurso de Belleza.
Los actores de los personajes secundarios como los policías y el FBI, dieron actuaciones como si se tratase de una obra de teatro mala. El robo donde Janiyah queda en el medio, cuando va a su trabajo a pedir su cheque, fue absurdamente interpretado. Todos estos detalles hablan una y otra vez de lo que ha hecho una y otra vez su Director en las producciones que yo he visto, por ejemplo.
So "STRAW" won't go down in history like John Q where we saw a Denzel Washington, equally overwhelmed by social and health injustices, which although it was a different context, we could see more attention to detail and better performances from the casting. Here in "STRAW" everything was on the shoulders of Taraji who did an excellent job, her expressions or gestures, her exhaustion and desperation was absolutely a brilliant performance.
Así que "Harta" no pasará a la historia como Jhon Q donde vimos a un Denzel Washington, igualmente sobrepasado por injusticias sociales y de salud, que aunque fue otro contexto, pues si pudimos ver más cuidado en los detalles y mejores actuaciones del casting. Aquí en "Harta" todo estuvo sobre los hombros de Taraji que lo hizo excelente, sus expresiones o gestos, su desgaste y desesperación fue absolutamente una brillante actuación.
Taraji P. Henson's performance, as I've said throughout this post, is excellent and will always be a reference point for me when deciding to see a production.
The photography and setting were pleasing. I always appreciate when everything looks great, the color palette, each location or space, it really seemed like it was just that. The bank looked like a bank, the school, the street, the neighborhood—all of it was great.
The Message: We truly live in a society where anyone can be overwhelmed by difficulties, and few people stop to listen to others and offer a helping hand. Sometimes we just need a person or two to listen and offer us calm, consideration, a little help. This is a reflection that the film "STRAW" leaves us with, a much-needed call to society.
The final twist: I didn't imagine it, I never would have imagined it, it was devastating for the viewer and although I would have liked to have been given more time to digest it, I must admit that it was a twist I will never forget.
La Actuación de Taraji P. Henson como ya lo he dicho a lo largo de esta publicación, es excelente y siempre será un referente para yo decidir ver una producción.
La fotografía y ambientación, fueron agradables, siempre aprecio cuando todo se ve muy bien, la paleta de colores, cada locación o espacio, realmente parecía que era eso. El banco parecía un banco, el colegio, la calle, el vecindario, todo esto estuvo genial.
El Mensaje, realmente vivimos en una sociedad donde cualquier persona puede estar sobrepasada por las dificultades, y pocas personas se detienen a escuchar a otras y brindar una mano amiga. A veces solo necesitamos que una persona o dos, nos escuchen y nos den calma, o consideración, un poco de ayuda, y esta es una reflexión que nos deja la película "Harta" un llamado muy necesario para la sociedad.
El Giro final: No me lo imaginaba, nunca me lo hubiese imaginado, fue devastador para el espectador y aunque me hubiese gustado que le hubiesen dado más tiempo para digerirlo, debo reconocer que si fue un giro que nunca olvidaré.
The acting of some extras, such as the police and FBI agents, was quite poor, and they diminished the film's seriousness considerably. It even gave the impression of watching a low-budget film on a television channel from a few years ago. This oversight seems to be the result of the film being made too quickly, and they didn't have time to polish these details.
The "racial" theme that Taraji P. Henson always touches on in the productions in which she participates was occasionally mentioned by her in this film, but it wasn't addressed in depth. In fact, the problems her character Janiyah faces could easily have been those of any person with financial problems, so although the character mentions them, they weren't really justified.
La actuación de algunos extras como de policías y FBI, estuvieron bastante mal, y le bajaron bastante seriedad a la película, incluso daba la impresión de estar viendo una película de bajo presupuesto en un canal de televisión de algunos años. Este descuido parece producto de hacer la película muy rápido y no tuvieron tiempo de pulir estos detalles.
El tema "racial" que siempre toca Taraji P. Henson en las producciones donde participa, en esta película fueron mencionados por ella eventualmente, pero no son tocados a profundidad y de hecho los problemas que tiene su personaje Janiyah, perfectamente pudieron ser de cualquier persona con problemas económicos, así que aunque el personaje los menciona, realmente no estuvieron justificados.
Despite the details I didn't like, I highly recommend "STRAW," first for Taraji P. Henson's performance and for the story and its twist. I think it was a great story, with a great lead actress, that could have been better told, but it's still worth watching and understanding its message, to reflect on such sensitive and current issues in our society.
A pesar de los detalles que no me gustaron, si recomiendo "Harta" totalmente, primero por la actuación de Taraji P. Henson y por la historia y su giro. Creo que fue una gran historia, con una gran primera actriz que debió ser mejor contada, pero aún así vale la pena verla y entender su mensaje, para reflexionar temas tan sensibles y actuales de nuestra sociedad.

No le llega a Jhon Q, con la cual es inevitable comparar, aunque tengan diferentes contextos.
En esta la protagonista soporta toda la película, fue espectacular. Pero muchos detalles que no cuidó hacen que en mi opinión esté muy por debajo de Jhon Q.
