The Substance (After the Commotion) (Review) (En-Es)

I finally saw it. I'd been running away for months. To be honest, I'm not a fan of horror (literally, they scare me), so, given the premise, I resisted seeing "The Substance" until the local theater announced its screening, and it was now or never.

I wouldn't say I was predisposed, but I did go into the film with forewarned. Perhaps for that reason, everything seemed disturbing in some way, unsettling, or meant to evoke a certain feeling of disgust in the viewer, even in the most common things like a television show or a plate of shrimp.

Body horror is a resource that has been overused in cinema, which is why it's hard to find in quality productions like this one these days. The Substance disturbed me, and although, as my photography teacher used to say, this is one of the signs that we're in front of an interesting work of art, it left a bad taste in my mouth.

That said, the scenes were very well done. Visually, they grotesquely reflected the oppressive spirit of the society in which the film is set. But there's something about the plot that, in my opinion, doesn't quite come together. The fruitless search for beauty and eternal youth without the demons that torment the protagonist and her reality, with the world of entertainment as another aggravating factor where this problem is magnified, and those who don't meet certain standards are replaced by those who wield real power.

In general, the film follows that line, but occasionally flirts with other plots that it doesn't fully develop and that the screenwriters may end up discarding, as well as some characters who could have greatly enhanced the story by showing other perspectives, but they remain just what could have been.

My observations will most likely differ with the big fans, because yes, the film gives you what it promises: a full-blown body horror experience tinged with social and entertainment industry criticism. But perhaps my view as a casual viewer is driven by the feeling that it sacrifices the plot for the sake of its own spectacularity. You can leave me alone. the comments if you have seen it what you think or if you would dare to see it.

I enjoyed the film, but I felt the plot was too shallow, too simple. It could have delved way deeper into the ethics of the substance itself, and how that played out in society more broadly than the in-your-face way it went about it.

It was entertaining, and memorable, but could've been even better if it was just a tiny bit more scientific about the way it explained things.

They were afraid of success 😅 or they sought it too much.
