What is Hivebuzz?

Note: HiveBuzz was formerly named SteemitBoard and within this proposal, when we mention HiveBuzz, it also implies everything that has been done as SteemitBoard.

HiveBuzz is a project that is designed to bring gamification to the Hive blockchain by:

  • tracking users' activity and achievements
  • notifying them of their progress
  • organizing contests and challenges

Users are rewarded with virtual badges and sometimes with HIVE/HBD tokens when there is a prize pool associated with a contest or challenge.

Users can check their achievements on the HiveBuzz Website and look up their ranking to compare themselves to others on the Ranking page.

The HiveBuzz project has been initiated more than 3 years ago by @arcange, a now well-known actor of the Hive ecosystem. This is probably one of the oldest projects on the platform that is still alive.

People love gamification and from the very beginning, the HiveBuzz project was well received and got very positive feedback from users.

Why is HiveBuzz a great tool for the Hive Community?

On top of adding fun to the Hive user experience, one of the underlying goals of the project was to increase user retention.

By challenging people to reach new targets, Hivebuzz keeps people motivated and helps them to stay committed and active on the platform.

This is especially true for new users, as this source of motivation keeps them active on the platform long enough to find friends and people who share the same interests and who, in turn, will support them.

As of today,

  • HiveBuzz has sent out 2 625 580 notifications about users' achievements.
  • Those notifications generated 54 567 replies from the users
  • We receive around 100 -150 comments per day from users saying thank you or wanting to engage with us.

Many users are telling us how they felt welcome at the beginning of their journey on the blockchain because of this tool. They are often surprised to see we take time to answer them.

Hivebuzz also supports users by using its voting power and spread it to as many users as possible when it notifies them. As newcomers receive notifications more often, they also more often receive an upvote.

These are not upvotes with big financial value but, small streams making big rivers, step by step, each HiveBuzz' upvote helps everyone to grow a bit. This goes without taking into account the social added value and the self-esteem they generate. Up to now, @hivebuzz has upvoted a total of 823 787 posts from 141 914 distinct authors!

In return, HiveBuzz has benefited from regular support from many users, with more than 43 000 followers and 850 000 upvotes received for its notification or posts.

In addition to supporting activities and engagement on the platform, HiveBuzz also aims to bring people together in a digital and personal way in order to strengthen communities and create real connections!

We do this by:

  • initiating new challenges to earn personal badges
  • give projects and communities additional visibility and the opportunity to distribute their own personal badges
  • Enable Hive meetup organizers around the world to gamify their activities by providing them with dedicated meetup badges.

In addition to this, the "Meet the Steemians Contest" organized during the last two editions of Steemfest brought an additional dimension to the interpersonal meetings made during these events. Proof of Scan (PoS) and Proof of Hug (PoH) are no longer just theoretical concepts.

Therefore, it can proudly be said that HiveBuzz has proven to be a good and persistent user retention tool over the past 4 years.

Why a Proposal?

Up to now, our founder (@arcange) has always funded this project (at loss) using his own money. This includes:

Infrastructure costs:
Web, database, storage and processes servers (the storage of badges of around 1.4 million users represents ~500 GB to date), security monitoring and management, maintenance and backups.

Web development and graphic design:
It's 2 persons who did the branding of Steemitboard, the rebranding to Hivebuzz, the development and maintenance of the website, the design and deployment of new badges.

Communication and Community Management:
Development and maintenance of the notification infrastructure, answering users' comments (~2,5hrs/day), preparation of contests, challenges and new badges to keep the fire.

Without decent funding, it becomes increasingly difficult to continue to devote sufficient time and energy to a project of this magnitude. Not to mention the work required to make it grow and remain attractive.

We have hundreds of ideas and projects (badges, contests, challenges, ...) just waiting to be developed in order to bring new features and keep you entertained.

Thanks to funding with the DHF (Decentralized Hive Fund), we will be able to deploy them faster, more regularly and provide a more funny user experience.

We could even promote user education in blockchain technologies through gaming as we did with our latest initiative (Hive Revolution - Mission 1).

We are convinced that this can contribute to improving the onboarding and retention of new users, which will ultimately be very beneficial for the whole community.

Why not use Hivebuzz revenues?

The few author rewards collected over the last years from posts and announcements summed up to a total of 2194,- SBD. They have been used to partially cover infrastructure costs and top up the prize pool of several contests we have organized. FYI, such an amount doesn’t even cover the costs generated by the migration from Steem to Hive.

We also run a witness node (@steemitboard) to help the project. It has never powered down, not even to cover its own witness node costs. This enabled the @steemitboard account to garner more Steem Hive Power, providing it with more Resource Credits to interact with all the blockchain users and raising its upvotes value.

Unfortunately, it still wasn't enough, which lead to the call for help made in September 2018 after the introduction of RCs (Resource Credits).

Finally, relying on the reward pool and posts payouts is not a viable option to fund such a project.

Request for Funding

This proposal is not intended to reimburse the expenses that have been incurred so far. It is strictly to cover current and future costs in terms of infrastructure and human resources so that we can continue to do what we have done so far and even more!

Here are the costs that have been budgeted, taking into account our past experience of several years and our plans for the future:

1. Infrastructure ($250/month)

  • servers (web, processes, database and storage)
  • security and monitoring
  • maintenance and backups services

2. Graphic Design and Web Development (2 persons - $2500/month)

  • Creation of new challenges and contests with prizes to win
  • Design and implementation of new badges
  • New features like footer creator, badge creator, contest creator, …

3. Communication and Community management (2 persons - $1000/month)

  • Daily interaction with users
  • Communication around new badges, challenges, contests and features
  • Translation management (we want to support multiple languages)
  • Events organization
  • Guiding starters
  • Reporting about the use of DHF funds

Considering the elements mentioned above, we are asking for 125 HBD per day for the remaining period of 2020.

Transparency:

To show every supporter of this proposal that things move forward, we will do a regular report of the work carried out and project status.

The beneficiary of this proposal has been set to @hivechain.app for more transparency.
@hivechain.app is an account dedicated to funding (d)Apps projects for the Hive blockchain.

Hello dear friends @hivebuzz They are doing an excellent job, providing valuable and inspiring information, which encourages us to reach new goals and to be proud of those we have achieved.
My congratulations to the entire team, and the success everyone deserves.
I wish you a great day

avatar

I hate that we stole the ninja mined stake 100%.. and I don't know any of y'all that are involved.. but I do like the badges.. It motivates newbies.. so I went ahead and voted it. GL

avatar

No brainer for me. I know how important this is for HIVE.

My community raves about it in our Telegram every time they unlock a new badge.

Supported!

avatar

Thank you for your support @jongolson, much appreciated!
Why not create a badge for your community?

avatar

We'd love to. Just let us know what you need on our end :)

avatar

Yeah this is a no brainer. But maybe thinking about selfsufficiancy like advertising on your website. Because the traffic on the website would be very high. High traffic could lead to big revenue what you could convert into the hive system. This would be the same with all the websites like peakd.com hive.io etc. The heavy servercosts of steemit was covered by those costs was told. So setup the advertisement on your website it will be forgiven and it would be as @exyle said once an external revenue stream.

I know you reward new users and users who build their account but only depending on internal resources is very dangerous I don't want to lose you.

avatar

Thank you for your support and suggestion @hans001.

Advertising is a solution that has already been considered even that does not have our preference. We put a lot of effort to give our website an attractive look and feel and it would be painful to see it disfigured with intrusive banner ads. This does not prevent us from thinking of alternative solutions

I don't want to lose you.

You will not lose us. We have already survived for almost 4 years. We are committed to stay alive!

Yep, insta voted the proposal. Love the project and literally check in every day to see how I'm doing and whenever I got a notification when I first started it kept me motivated to post so gets my support for what it's worth 😃

avatar

Thank you for your kind words and your unfailing support @nickyhavey, really appreciated, especially from such great content producers as you are!!! Its great to see people are liking the project ❤️🙏

avatar

You got it! Keep up the great work with keeping users engaged and motivated! Always looking for more badges to earn and cool stuff like that! Yeahhhh! 💪

avatar

You know you'll always have my support. This is my favorite community booster to increase early retention rates of new users on the blockchain.

Question1: Can anyone recommend some options for updating my delegations? I have not figured out how to do this on Hive.

Question2: Also I am majorly confused what to do with my old steem tribe tokens. Are there any tutorials recommending what to do with the them? It seems like a messy process to trade them out individually at a forced loss for the exchange to profit from, but I'm not using Steem anymore.

avatar

Great @creativetruth! We very much appreciate your support!❤️🙏
1.I know that on peakd wallet you have an option to delegate to people. Also at bemee: https://beeme.icu/?account=creativetruth you can see your current delegations and update them.

For your second question i also would have to investigate 🤔 Sorry I can't help you with this. We have moved on from steem a long time ago.

cheers, liz from hivebuzz team

Love this project. I never stop to be impressed by how decentralized systems like this can incentivize community members to work so hard at making the ecosystem thrive.

FYI @arcange, I found a typo here (https://hivebuzz.me/):
"HiveBuzz tracks your achievements on the Hive blockchain and buzz you when you get new badges."
--> "HiveBuzz tracks your achievements on the Hive blockchain and buzzes you when you get new badges.

avatar

OK, I've voted for your proposal. I feel a good vibe from you guys and really want this community to thrive. It's my first time voting for a proposal too! How many votes do you need to get the proposal approved?

avatar

Thank you for your unfailing support @hooked2thechain, really appreciated!🙏❤️ I think we need about 18mio more in power behind our proposal to get through (status now). So it is still a long road, but not impossible i would say!
Thanks for your kind words! they are really appreciated! 🙂👍

avatar

Supported!
I hope you get necessary votes you need soon

avatar

Thanks @outlinez! We also hope that we do.. until now we have at least 19percent! Its moving slow but forward 😉
cheers and thanks for the support!!❤️❤️

Thank you! Is there any guide how exactly the gamification works?

avatar

You're welcome @technological! Yes there is right on top at our account. But i 'll just ping it to you here as well: https://peakd.com/hivebuzz/@hivebuzz/hivebuzz-hive-gamification-experience
cheers, @lizanomadsoul from hivebuzz team

PS: It would be very appreciated if you could vote for our proposal on Peakd.com so we can keep up the good work!

avatar

Thanks for the link to the guide and your project is truly helpful. Upvoted the proposal. Have a good day!

I noticed that @haejin is ranked number one on the Ranking page despite being in some blacklists. Seems he stopped posting 9 days ago too. It's quite discouraging to see him there when there are other great hivers posting great content daily without having been blacklisted. Do we want hivers to aspire to be like @haejin?

avatar

It is just an explination of the ranking page. No evaluation or inspiration of actions done.
cheers, liz

You got my vote

Hi @hivebuzz, @arcange, @techybear, @captaink, and @lizanomadsoul! I really LOVE what you all are doing. The Hive Buzz project really is a great idea because it brings the community together around productive achievement and connection!

Recently I posted a #CelebrityWatch picture of myself and Arnold Schwarzenegger exclusively here on the Hive Blockchain (and promotionaly on Twitter, Facebook, and Fitbit).
ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER4.jpg

The post got quite a lot of attention however... I think we, as a community, can do a whole lot better! I was thinking we could put a challenge together where people on the Hive Blockchain share photos of themselves with their favorite star/famous person. I realize this is going to be a really hard thing to do, especially with all the precautionary measures being taken with COVID-19... But I think that this could be the reason this is such a good idea! It's difficult so it should catch more attention here on Hive and on the other social media platforms.

Hive community members could either dig up old photos or they could attempt to have a photo taken with themselves and a famous person.

Of course, I think it would make sense that the account holder is in the picture along with the celebrity to avoid people just re-posting photos from the internet. As well... I also think this would be a perfect opportunity to also share the photo and a link pointing back to the Hive Blockchain. We want the fan's around the world to pay attention to what we are doing here on Hive and I think this might be a good way to do that! We may even get some star attention. You never know!

I'm not sure which hashtag would be best but what do you think about the one I used above? #CelebrityWatch or perhaps #HiveFamous, #CelebrityHive or #HiveCelebrity might also be good options.

So what do you all think?

Now for some constructive feedback:
As I mentioned above... I LOVE what you all are doing with the @HiveBuzz project! It's awesome and I'm prepared to vote for this proposal (if it's not already enacted!)

My feedback however is that it would make sense to advance away from the previous Steem classifications. I used to love the redfish, minnow, dolphin, orca, and whale concept but it just doesn't work here on the Hive Blockchain. We need to completely re-brand those classifications don't you think?

Perhaps this is what some of the proposal funds will go towards in the future... I hope so anyways!

Ok! That's it from me!

I look forward to hearing back from you guys! :)

P.s. I just voted for this proposal with this account: @wil.metcalfe, @AdventureReady, and @BeachReady! 🙌

avatar

Thank you for your support and feedback @wil.metcalfe, much appreciated!

We do not plan to rebrand the user's classification. It's not based on Steem but on the global cryptosphere vocabulary, especially about whales.

We brainstormed on moving to a "bee" ecosystem, but it doesn't work, mainly because it would have been more role oriented when the current classification is weight oriented.

avatar
(Edited)

Thank's for your response @hivebuzz team!

I have taken some time to think... Before the week picks up I thought I had better come back here.

I certainly understand the ideas behind the current user classification. The only problem I see is it's strong affinity with the previous ecosystem on Steem(it) and a difficult fit from the branding end of things.

I really do think that there could be huge benefits to a fully thought out re-brand of the user classifications and there would/could also be more support for this proposal.

These badges have the potential to be iconic to the Hive brand as they represent the identity and hard work that each user dedicates to the Hive Blockchain.

I have been wracking my brain trying to come up with something that works... I think that you are right about the direct parallels of the insect world; it being one that's more role orientated. That's probably something we would want to avoid.

What do you think about zooming out from the bee hive and moving into the forest? Perhaps we could draw land rather than water comparisons...

Personally I like the idea of trees in the forest... perhaps different size/type tree's. All homes/ecosystems for honey bee's, birds, raccoon, deer, bear, etc. Or perhaps we could imagine that the Hive ecosystem is the forest and we the account users are the animals in that forest.

They do say that the best time to plant a tree is 100 years ago... So the next best time to plant a tree is today. That might work nicely for promotion don't you think?

I hope that I haven't been to presumptuous here... This is really just me thinking out loud and my best attempt to not just weigh in but lend my mind (so to speak).

So do you think that this idea could this work? Is there benefit to re-imagining the classification system for Hive?

I think that, at the moment, we are all still in transition... If we found a way to effectively step away with the implementation of new classifications. It could go a long way to bringing people together around the Hive Blockchain and forging new, proud, and diverse distinction between where we have been and where we are going as a decentralized community.

What you guys are doing is important. (I think so anyways!)

...so now is the best time to dive deep and think all these sorts of things through carefully don't you think? (Maybe there is even some value in crowd sourcing the community...? That's another idea!)

I hope that I have been of some use.

Let me know if you would like my continued input/brainstorming with this. I'm happy to help wherever I can.

avatar

Thank you for your input. As already written, we do not plan to do any rebranding now.

avatar

Ok. Gotcha... just curious... why did you guys unfollow and ignore? I just got this notification and was a bit surprised by it...
ytkrn0.jpg

avatar

Hey @wil.metcalfe! As you can see hivebuzz is not following anybody at the moment. As it is a project there is no feed required 🙂

avatar

Very strange. It must be some sort of glitch with the esteem app? These notifications came in and had me shaking my head in confusion and wonder... Thank you for your response.

avatar

🙏🙏🙏 With this support encouraging growth that is always active in providing and displaying original moments, always keeping the spirit, hopefully in the future more attention, thank you for your full support.💪💪🙏🙏🙏

avatar

You are super welcome @albanna! Thanks for your kind words! It is always motivating to see that people like what we do 🙏❤️
It would be very appreciated if you could support our proposal so we can keep up the good work!
cheers, liz

Please check out my account, it passed the ID check ;) Thank you

avatar

This is the sole proposal I will be endorsing with my vote that is asking for over 100 HBD a day.

The only reason for the 25 extra HBD over my cap for support, is due to really long term engagement and support in my comments for years, starting on Steem.

That said, I would be enthralled to see a lower budget on your next proposal, more automation less paid workers. This is blockcahin technology and I expect bleeding edge budgets from bleeding edge tech.
