A Geeky Guy's Guide to Sinners

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

I'll cut right to the chase before explaining my take a little more thoroughly. First, Sinners is the best movie I have seen this year. I will be incredibly disappointed if it is not nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. Second, Sinners is just a more serious version of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 1996 film From Dusk Till. From Dusk Till Dawn is one of my favorite movies so if you haven't seen it, check it out. It is wildly entertaining movie.

In my opinion, a movie should not lose points just because it is highly influenced by another movie. That is how art works. People don't hate on Manet and Monet for both being impressionists. And no one should hate on Ryan Coogler if he was indeed inspired by From Dusk Till Dawn. All that matters is that a writer/director adds to it and makes it his own.

I refuse to give away any spoilers, but if you have seen any previews for this movie, you know it involves Vampires. But the amazing part is, it didn't even need to. Don't get me wrong, the Vampires made it super exciting but I was hooked every minute it was on my screen.

Let me do a quick aside on why I am writing this now instead of when it was out in theaters. It is because I am the scarediest scaredy cat you ever lived. I am a huge baby about horror movies. I simply get too immersed into all the movies I watch, so when something is scary... I am genuinely scared. I saw the previews for this and said "Damn that looks great... which I could see it." Now that it is finally on Max and I can watch it in the daylight at home, I was finally ready. And I am so happy I did.

I truly wish you could hear this picture.

There is absolutely nothing supernatural about this movie for the first 45 minutes. Even then it is just a quick scene. So the real action doesn't start until a full hour has passed. You might think that is a negative but you could not be more wrong. Like I said before, I would have watched this if it just told the story of twin gangsters returning to Mississippi to open up a Juke Joint for their black community in 1932. The characters, acting, dialogue was so compelling that it was like a whole separate fantastic movie. Add in the fact that director Ryan Coogler used music as another character made it truly special. The Blues plays a role in this movie like I have never seen before. It was amazing. The cherry on top was an incredible time shifting scene that I literally rewound and watched again. It is some of the finest film making I have ever seen. Although every performance was perfect, my favorites were Michael B Jordan (playing both Smoke and Stack) and Wunmi Mosaku as Annie.

Although I am ascaredy cat, I have seen my fair share of Vampire movies. This is by far one of the best. After establishing the characters and story, Coogler creates one of the most interesting and original takes on Vampire I have seen. The action scenes are top notch. Although there are 1 or 2 jump scares, I was never really scared. I was just on the edge of my seat and incredibly entertained. Once the action starts, the music changes and is just as perfect as the first part of the movie.

I highly recommend that you watch and listen to this movie ASAP.

Sinners, good review, my friend, without giving much more information about it, I will gladly try to see it to give you my opinion and well, that movie was not one of my favorites "From Dusk Till Dawn" but well, the important thing is to see it to give you my opinion.

What really grabbed my attention is that you said the film was strong even before the vampire element came in that really speaks to the quality of the writing and acting.
I can’t wait to see Michael B. Jordan take on a dual role, and I’m excited to see how the fantasy aspect was used in a fresh way.

I'm kind of the same way with scary movies. I won't go to the theater and watch them or I probably won't even sit down to watch them at home, but if it is the middle of the day on the weekend and I am flipping through the channels while I am waiting for a college football game to come on, I will often find myself spending some time on this movie or that one. Actually, usually what I do is I go online and I read the plot summary once it comes out. I like reading what the "twist" is in a lot of movies without dealing with the nightmares :) From Dusk Till Dawn was a pretty unique WTF movie for me, so this one could be interesting. Thanks for the review!

If you liked From Dusk Till Dawn I am confident you can handle this one. That one was wild absurd fun. Sinners is much more serious.

I remember watching FDTD for the first time and just being like "wait, WTF"! It was so good though and had such a great cast.

Really good movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it myself. I didn’t know about the Tarantino influence though. I haven’t seen a Tarantino movie I haven’t liked so I’ll have to check out From Dusk Till Dawn now. But the dialogue in sinners was just insanely dope. Croogler nailed this one…

Great review though!

Oh yeah Coogler created a masterpiece. Even the first half with no action would have still been the best movie I've seen this year. Great story and characters!

Every detail has been explained, so we will definitely see. Not everyone watches scary movies, some people watch them and aren't afraid
