I wouldn't be surprised if this is considered the best film released by Marvel in the last few years, knowing that the stuff before it (with the exception of perhaps Moon Knight, which is a series and I haven't finished yet to give a final verdict of my own) have either gone unnoticed or as the hasmereir of the public (both Thor Love and Thunder and Antman Quantumania).

However, here it's apparent both that there was a clear purpose for the characters in this story for this film (primarily for Rocket Raccoon) and that this particular project came burdened by a consistent vision that comes from the beginning of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy: It was directed, written and produced by James Gunn, who while he won't have much work outside of this trilogy, had earned bona fides for both the first two films and for his work on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

And the crazy thing is the premise that this almost could not have gone this way: Gunn had been removed as director in 2018 after a Twitter controversy...but assuming both the criticism towards this decision and because of the importance he had in the development of the film, Gunn was reinstated in 2019 and got his hands in after finishing the other projects.

I hadn't seen the first two films before, only having context of the characters because of Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, but despite that, this film pulled off its task in an adventure of a variety of feels: From the jokes to the anxious moments, it was a movie with everything to carry.

So now it's time to talk about the end result and how it's both a fresh breath of fresh air in Marvel's repertoire as well as, in my opinion, a film that enjoys a different and enjoyable dynamic with its characters.

The time to grow up for everyone

In the beginning we see the Guardians working on rebuilding their base and goofing off just as you would remember them from before, except for Peter Quill/Star Lord who has to be dragged out of his house drunk and carried by his buddies which gives to that scene in the trailer where they are seen walking dramatically as if something happened to him in the "grand finale of the trilogy"...which is funny in how it's actually the beginning getting the drunk captain out for a new day.

However, when a being named Adam Warlock (who my brother and I mistook to be played by Anthony Starr due to the similar hairstyle and crazy face) arrives to attack the base and attempt to abduct the raccoon, he only manages to leave him badly wounded as the rest intervened against him...and then they find that to save him from his wound, he must be freed from a device in his body that doesn't allow his healing coming from someone related to his past.

Each character in some way is confronted with their weaknesses but somehow they manage to develop against what they thought they were or what they were considered, while also exploring Rocket Raccoon's past and his connection to the High Evolutionary (the main villain of this film) both for what he did to him and for still being sought after by it to get his brains after being jealous of his intelligence. That's a vague way to sum it up but saving words and spoilers, it's pretty tragic what happens to the raccoon while clearly showing how crazy this villain is, even more so than most seen before in the MCU.

You can tell that the characters have clear development in how the film starts and how it ends, which oddly enough is something that doesn't often happen much in modern superhero films, so it's quite appreciated.

A film for a more mature audience...in subtle and not so subtle ways.

While the movie has something that should make its plot and course enjoyable...it's certainly something that's not for kids: This movie surprised in how they didn't hold back with the things it wanted to do. From Rocket Raccoon's backstory and how he looks with other animals badly modified by the High Evolutionary, to the fact that this new villain looks so crazy to find Rocket after Rocket showed more intelligence potential than he did to the point of looking more and more unstable as he fails with this goal.

Oh, and of course, both over the top jokes and seeing both quite lethal moves (decapitated and cut in half...though obviously this is only with CGI alien creatures).

However, with that more juvenile/adult theme being present with the characters and the way the stories unfold, it looks good and stands out with the variety of more "suitable for all audiences without much risk" films coming out of Phase 4 so far.

Bottom line, again, knowing that these Marvel movies usually leave quite a few things to the imagination, what is seen here was a big surprise.

The super presentation

The music in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies has always been a point known by the public, not only for the quality of the 80s and 90s songs they choose at specific moments, but also that in some of them is a detail by the music player that Star Lord carries with him, which is not only mentioned a few times within the universe of the film, but also even has a sentimental meaning when the film ends.

While the graphics won't be that impressive nowadays for what we are used to in movies, at least you don't see things with bad CGI or bad designs, and the fight scenes can be crazy, to the point that in one of them with a shootout with Star Lord and Groot, I told my brother that it was perfect with Devil May Cry 3 music 😂

Conclusion

This time I wanted to spare myself from words on the plot itself because, even though I won't have gone through the past movies to be that fond of the characters, what I saw here was enough to make me understand why these particular movies were so acclaimed, and this third installment was so highly anticipated along with the return of the original director.

At this point I can imagine many considering this one of the best films Marvel has released in recent years...and it's hard to deny that, knowing that while it has had hits in some films (No Way Home, and Madness in the Multiverse which I haven't seen) as series (Moon Knight and Loki), the ridicule it has gone through with critical flops has been more remembered than anything lately...though I saw Quantumania so far has grossed quite a bit at the box office despite its reception.

My verdict is that, on this occasion, knowing that there will already be other reviews that will have tried to talk spoilers about this movie to recommend it while I know the things it brings up its sleeve to be good...I'll just leave you the recommendation to go see it so you can enjoy also the things I could find in the movie 😎

El momento de crecer para cada quien

Al principio vemos a los Guardianes trabajando en reconstruir su base y tontear justo como los recordarías de antes, excepto por Peter Quill/Star Lord quien se le tiene que sacar de su casa borracho y cargado por sus compañeros lo cual da a esa escena del trailer en el que se ven caminando dramáticamente como si algo le hubiera pasado en el "gran final de la trilogía"...lo cual es gracioso en como en realidad es el inicio sacando al borracho capitán para un nuevo día.

Sin embargo, cuando un ser llamado Adam Warlock (quien mi hermano y yo confundimos que era interpretado por Anthony Starr debido al peinado similar y cara de loco) llega a atacar la base e intentar raptar al mapache, solo logra dejarlo malherido ya que el resto intervino contra el...y luego se encuentran con que para salvarlo de su herida, hay que liberarlo de un aparato en su cuerpo que no permite su sanación proveniente de alguien relacionado con su pasado.

Cada personaje de alguna forma es enfrentado con sus debilidades pero de alguna forma u otra logran desarrollarse en contra de lo que pensaban que eran o lo que eran considerados, mientras que también se explora el pasado de Rocket Raccoon y su conexión con el Alto Evolucionador (el villano principal de esta película) tanto por lo que le hizo como por seguir siendo buscado por este para obtener su cerebro tras estar celoso de su inteligencia. Es una forma vaga de resumirlo pero ahorrando palabras y spoilers, es bastante trágico lo que le sucede al mapache mientras que muestra de forma clara que tan loco este villano está, aún más que la mayoría vistos antes en el MCU.

Se puede decir que los personajes tienen un claro desarrollo en como empieza la película y como termina, lo cual curiosamente es algo que no suele darse mucho en películas de superhéroes modernas, así que se aprecia bastante.

Una película para un público más maduro...de formas sutiles y no tan sutiles.

Si bien la película tiene algo que debería hacer su trama y transcurso disfrutable...ciertamente es algo que no es para niños: Esta película sorprendió en cómo no se contuvieron con las cosas que quería hacer. Desde el trasfondo de Rocket Raccoon y como se ve con otros animales mal modificados por el Alto Evolucionador, al hecho de que este nuevo villano se le ve tan loco por encontrar a Rocket después de que este mostrara más potencial de inteligencia que el al punto de verse más y más inestable a medida que falla con esta meta.

Ah, y claro, tanto chistes subidos de tono como ver tanto movimientos bastante letales (decapitados y cortados a la mitad...aunque obviamente esto solo es con criaturas alien de CGI).

Sin embargo, con esa temática más juvenil/adulta que se ve presente con los personajes y la forma en la que se desarrollan las historias, queda bien y resalta con la variedad de películas más "aptas para todo público sin mucho riesgo" que vienen de la fase 4 hasta ahora.

En resumidas cuentas, una vez más, sabiendo que estas películas de Marvel suelen dejar unas cuantas cosas a la imaginación, lo que se ve aquí fue una gran sorpresa.

La super presentación

La música en las películas de Guardianes de la Galaxia siempre ha sido un punto conocido por el público, no solo por la calidad de las canciones ochenteras y noventeras que escogen en momentos puntuales, sino también que en algunas de ellas es un detalle por parte del reproductor de música que lleva Star Lord encima, el cual no solo es mencionado unas veces dentro del universo de la película, sino que también hasta tiene un significado sentimental cuando la película termina.

Mientras que el apartado gráfico no será tan impresionante hoy en día para lo acostumbrado que estamos para esto en las películas, al menos no se ven cosas con mal CGI o diseños mal hechos, y las escenas de pelea pueden ser una locura, al punto que en una de ellas con un tiroteo con Star Lord y Groot, le dije a mi hermano que quedaba perfecto con música de Devil May Cry 3 😂

Conclusión

Esta vez quise ahorrarme de las palabras en la trama en sí porque, aun cuando no habré pasado por las películas pasadas para estar tantísimo encariñado con los personajes, lo que vi aquí bastó para hacerme entender porque estas películas en particular fueron tan aclamada, y esta tercera entrega fue tan esperada junto con el regreso del director original.

En este momento puedo imaginarme a muchos considerando esta como una de las mejores películas que ha lanzado Marvel en estos últimos años...y es difícil negarlo, sabiendo que mientras que ha tenido aciertos en algunas películas (No Way Home, y la Locura en el Multiverso que no he visto) como series (Moon Knight y Loki), el ridículo que ha pasado con los fracasos críticos ha sido más recordado que nada últimamente...aunque vi que Quantumania hasta ahora ha recaudado bastante en taquilla a pesar de su recepción.

Mi veredicto es que, en esta ocasión, sabiendo que ya habrán otras reseñas que habrán intentado hablar con spoilers de esta película para recomendarlo mientras que conozco las cosas que trae bajo la manga para ser buena...solo les dejaré la recomendación de ir a verla para que puedan disfrutar también las cosas que pude encontrar en la película 😎
