Hello @victor2356,
I saw this movie some years ago and was very impressed with it. I like your review. I think your analysis is interesting, and spot on, although I would add another perspective. When I watched the movie I thought it was consistent with a tradition in Spanish culture/literature of presenting an uncertain reality. This obviously is not unique to Spanish literature, but it is a theme that has run through Spanish literature at least since Cervantes and Don Quijote. There is a dynamic between what is and what appears to be (ser and parecer). I think of Borges, Unamuno, Calderon de la Barca. Guillermo del Toro does (brilliantly) in the movie what these authors do in their writing. There is no line between reality and unreality. It is fluid and uncertain.
Anyway, I think I have to go back and watch the film again. You've given me an appetite for that :).
You're absolutely right, it's about uncertain realities, about showing us that not everything is what it seems, and Guillermo del Toro is excellent at conveying that. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable opinion with me.
