Back to the Future

Talking about The Fifth Element last night gave me a real feeling for delving back into old-style films. You might not want to believe it if you're as old as me but 1997 was almost 30 years ago. Crazy, right?

So today I'm going to be talking about good ol' Marty McFly and his best friend Doc Emmet Brown. I think everyone who's my age will remember this ending theme:

"Roads? Where we're going Marty, we don't need roads."

Took me a little while longer to get to this part because I enjoyed sitting and listening to "Huey Lewis & The News - Back in Time." Yup, a pop song even came out of this film! Would you believe it?

Such a nostalgic experience to watch some of the old time greats. I know hollywood have a hard on for remaking old classics, but I hope they just leave this one be. Might also be hard to throw in the whole part where Marty's Mum starts hitting on him! Haha. Seeing as we live in such a puritan society now. One of the funniest parts.

It's interesting as to how much of a classic this is and to how much we are devloping in the futuristic and ai space because of this film. There are people still trying to make hoverboards like the one below.

Yeah, and this happens because movies influence our culture quite a bit, or at least they used to anyway. I don't think I've seen a movie since perhaps Game of Thrones that had such a great impact on us as a whole. That being said I'm sure something else will come out and blow us away.

Isn't it interesting how the older world invisioned the later world? In Back to the future (which aired in 1985) made some grand assumptions about what life would be like in 2015. Hoverboards that float, Microwaves that cook meals in seconds (and from tiny pieces), and no to mention clothing that self dries.

Well, sadly, none of that is here yet. They may be in the military but definitely not something that has been put to the mass market where it's an everyday thing.

The 1980's was such a weird era; if you look at all the futuristic versions of the world back then they seemed to envision us in some sort of cyberpunky hell, and whilst not far from the truth with the megacorps that have emerged, we're not that much different in style. It was the same for Robocop and Total Recall too.

No, no body augmentations or punk style gangs though. At least not that I've seen anyway. I guess punks were the style of street gang back then so I don't think they expected them to fade out of existence.

Back to the future was so good that it spurred on three sequels, and there has even been talk recently of remaking it which I hope that they don't do.

Everyone was interested in time travel back in the 80's, with all the other sci fi films that were made around that era. Flight of the navigator, the terminator, Bill and Teds most Excellent adventure, Star Trek IV the voyage home, Masters of the Universe - and so much more.

I'm not reviewing this film because lets be real here, it's such a classic that almost everyone has seen it. And if you haven't, god damn, what rock are you living under?

Now you have to tell me. What's your favourite old skool classic?
