Introduction

This week it's time for another Trip Down Memory Lane in Cine Kids land and I think this week's movie theme is one that we can all relate to just a little as there have been plenty of movies from Peter Pan in the past decades. Where some movies have just one original cartoon, a real movie, and possibly a remake, Peter Pan has a few more.

While digging for information on Peter Pan's first movie, I had no clue that I'd find more movies than I saw over the years. There's a bit more to Peter Pan's cinema history than I expected so let's see what I found.

Peter Pan (1988)

I expected the first movie I found to be the one I remembered from my childhood, but looking at the drawing style in this cartoon, this was not the one I remembered. Digging a little further, I found out that this is an Australian 50-minute direct-to-video animated film from Burbank Films Australia, originally released in 1988. It's based on the novel Peter and Wendy from 1911, by JM Barrie, and adapted by Paul Leadon which was based on the 1904 play Peter Pan (or the Boy who wouldn't grow up). A lot of info there, which I found on Wikipedia. Source

I included the movie trailer below, let me know if this is your first memory of Peter Pan, or if you don't know this one and learned about Pan from a later movie.

Peter Pan (1953/1998)

Next up is Peter Pan from 1998, which sounded more plausible to me as being the first movie I ever saw about Peter Pan. I checked the trailer on Youtube and discovered that this is indeed the case. This trailer was one bringing up memories although then I discovered that this movie was released on VHS in 1998 while the original movie was from decades back, namely 1953 therefore this movie was probably seen by me as a teen being 13/14 as that's how I remember seeing most Disney movies, on VHS.

Do you remember Peter Pan's first movie from 1953 maybe in cinema, or were you one of the children seeing it on VHS after 1998, like me?

Hook (1991)

Next up is Hook, which I clearly remember seeing in the cinema at the time and loving because it was a true movie with actual human characters instead of a cartoon. I really remember that I loved it at the time and it was just as exciting as watching Peter Pan the cartoon in my childhood. Of course, Hook is a spin-off from the Peter Pan series because this one is about Captain Hook but I bet all the Peter Pan fans loved this one too. In the end, it's all about Neverland just like Peter's movies.

What's your take on these movies, did you see Hook? Did you like it as much as Peter Pan's original stories? I personally think spin-offs are great to look at stories from another angle and therefore you get to know more about the story by watching the spin-offs too.

Flying to Neverland - Peter Pan (2003)

Have you seen the 2003 movie, Peter Pan, flying to Neverland? Seeing this trailer again makes me want to watch all these Peter Pan Movies and spin-offs during the summer holidays because they are so much fun for the whole family, wouldn't you agree?

I'm not sure if this one was my favorite though, to know this, I will have to re-watch the older one such as this one. But a movie with pirates is usually good fun if you ask me.

Tinker Bell (2008)

Tinker Bell being part of the Peter Pan movie surely deserves her own movie if you ask me. Who doesn't love a fairy tale? Tinker Bell has her own story to tell. I love how this movie is animated and I think Tinker Bell is definitely worth watching (again) if you haven't seen it (yet).

Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)

Being released on Disney+ just a few months ago, I personally have not seen the new movie Peter Pan and Wendy but I will definitely watch it as soon as I can. I think the trailer looks promising and you can see the upgraded techniques over the past decades comparing the movies to each other. Newer is not always better though, I will have to watch it to compare them and give my final vote on which movie is my favorite. Below you can find the trailer of this new release:

Either way, no matter which movie is your favorite, there are many hours to watch Peter Pan, his friends, and his enemies on the screen. No matter if you prefer watching Peter's story from his point of view or want to dive into Hook's character or throw some fairy dust from Tinker Bell's angle, Pan fans are in for a treat if they want to do a themed movie night (or weekend).

Your favorite

Let me know in a comment below if you saw all the movies listed above and which one is your favorite, I'm curious to find out. Of course, it could depend if you saw the new release Peter and Wendy as well, so let me know without adding too many spoilers, please.

I know for a fact that I will dig for the movies to watch them this summer. I'm excited and I bet my daughter will love them too.

Thank you for stopping by today, please visit us again next week with another Cine Kids edition.

favorite take on the Peter Pan story? Disney's 1953 film, although Hook is a darn good entry as well. I have not seen any of the more recent entries, so I have no opinion on them. Thanks for sharing.

I missed your comment @thunderjack, sorry! If you haven't seen them, maybe check them out one day, but I can see why some people love the original movies more than newer ones.
