Today feels like a good day to visit one of the gems of 2016. It’s awesome that beauties like this can still come to me on a whim if I see something that makes me remember it. It’s been raining almost nonstop for the last ten days in my part of the world, and today my brother had to leave the state for a while, amid very turbulent weather. The entire family had their hearts in their mouths. And then I remembered this film. So, let’s get right into it!

Sully (2016)

Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and his First Officer, Jeff Skiles, take off from LaGuardia Airport on the 15th of January, 2009. During the ascent, the plane runs into a flock of birds that effectively damage the engine of the plane. Fearing that everyone on the plane is in jeopardy and without much time to think, they decide to land the plane off the Hudson River, judging that they will be unable to make it to the closest airport.

Even though mild injuries were sustained, all 155 passengers were successfully evacuated. Sully and Skiles should be celebrated for their heroic feat, but investigations are launched concerning the crash, with the National Transportation Safety Board deducing that the crash may have been the fault of Sully.

Had to pause a bit because of the influx of emotions that enveloped me. This movie, being based on a true incident, is one of those pivotal events in aviation history that left its mark. The first time I saw this film, I expected it to be some boring documentary, although documentaries, as they concern planes, are usually interesting. Either way, I didn’t think this movie would be as gripping as it turned out to be.

The cast was picked so beautifully. Every single one of them. There could not have been a more perfect fit than Tom Hanks to play this role. He delivered in such a completely heart-warming way, you cannot help but be drawn to everything that is happening. I had goosebumps the entire time. "I've had 40 years in the air, but in the end, I'm going to be judged by 208 seconds.” I think that could have been the most chilling dialogue I’d ever heard.

Of course, not every movie is perfect. So, you may find it slow paced or a bit dragging, but apart from some short bummers like Sully's wife suddenly having that misplaced realization about her husband being one among the 155 people saved, the narrative is a pure stunner. Everything in this movie spells beauty. You see it, you feel it, and you love every experience of it. I don’t have too many words, but this is one movie that stays with you for a long while. Hope you enjoy!
