The Intern

I have a thing for feel-good movies. I just like not having to think too deeply about movies sometimes, and simply just enjoy them for what they are. I‘ve been seeing a lot of films that are a decade old and even older. But then I came across this cinematic masterpiece that made me wonder how possible it was for me to not have seen this film all the while.

The Intern (2015)

The story, directed and produced by Nancy Meyers tells the story of Ben Whittaker, a seventy-year-old widower who finds retirement boring and decides to apply as a social intern. He gets the job and even though he looks a lot out of place, manages to get the other staff to like and accept him just for his sheer kindness and congeniality. His boss, Jules, however, simply ignores him
Things, however, begin to change when Ben becomes a chauffeur for Jules, and from there, a bond of knowledge, honesty, and mentorship ensues. As Jules begins to face personal and corporate struggles, her trusted intern may just be her only hope to remain afloat.

You know one thing I suddenly thought about yesterday? I realized that movies were rated a lot less critically from about 2018 and downwards. This movie was given a 4.7 rating on IMDB, but it was made in 2015. I do not think, in all honesty, that it would have had such a high rating if the movie were released now. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. But I rarely see a lot of highly rated films in recent times. There’s usually a whole lot of criticism that pushes the rating down.

I loved this film for a lot of reasons. Robert de Niro’s role as Ben was beautiful and simple. How he won over the other staff was nothing short of ingenious, and his efforts to simply connect with them were heart-warming to see. Sentimental movies are ones I try to avoid if I can, but I wholeheartedly welcomed this one because of how wholesome it was.

I also loved Anne Hathaway’s character as Jules. Calm, classy and composed. Watching her handle her personal issues was such a breeze because she went about it with grace and elegance and none of the drama you would expect. Maybe that would have brought a new arc to the story, but it was still okay that the movie stayed true to its genre. Lovely film through and through. Hope you enjoy!

It sounds interesting, I added to my watchlist. Thanks for sharing.

I've also noticed that some old movies have surprisingly high ratings, maybe because fewer people had internet access back then 🤭.

It's a bit difficult to impress audiences these days.
