I believe the current state of cinema is just part of a natural cycle; film has always had to evolve alongside technological breakthroughs. A prime example is the Star Wars saga: George Lucas stated he had to wait for technology to improve before he could produce the three episodes following his original trilogy.

Today, we are witnessing the next stage of that evolution, adapted for a generation that consumes content at a much faster pace. However, as you pointed out, there will likely always be filmmakers creating niche cinema for the rest of us, keeping that spirit of nostalgia alive.
