Snobbish Europeans like to ridicule Americans over their parochialism and insufficient knowledge of geography. Yet, even films made in Europe, like Extreme Ops, 2002 Anglo-German-Luxembourgian action film directed by Christian Duguay, might show grasp of geography that makes an average redneck from Kansas look like erudite cosmopolitan.

The plot setting leaves audience with a baffling question – either scriptwriters don’t have a clue about certain geopolitical facts or the plot is actually set in some sort of alternative universe in which Austria still borders Yugoslavia. In any case, the section of Austria where film begins is mountainous Alps region where the group of extreme sports enthusiasts and film makerts, led by Ian (played by Rufus Sewell) have arrived to practice ski stunts and shoot material that might use later as stock footage for television commercials. The group is going to a resort which, unbeknownst to them, is a hiding place of Slobodan Pavlov (played by Klaus Löwitsch), Serbian war criminal who has faked his death. Fearing that they are CIA agents that came to arrest him, he decides to take the group out. They now have to use all of their skills and ingenuity in order to survive.

Making a grave geographic error is actually a blessing in disguise for creators of Extreme Ops. After that moment nobody could take this film seriously, and this is exactly what is needed in order for audience properly enjoy it. Extreme Ops (originally titled Extremists, which was changed after 9/11 over potentially damaging conotations) was directed by Christian Duguay, Canadian director who had number of decent action films in previous decade. He puts Austrian, German and Canadian locations to good use and delivers number of decent action scenes and fine stunt work. Cast, which includes mostly disinterested but acceptable Rufus Sewell and forgettable Dewon Sawa, is solid, while Bridgette Wilson-Sampras provides good eye candy. Extreme Ops is hardly memorable film, but it can provide solid hour and half of entertainment to those with low expectations.

RATING: 5/10 (++)
