The Wire tried to go GOT route with credits using different versions of theme song based on content of the episode (for example, Season 4, dealing with school system, has song performed by boys choir) and slightly different shots. But, I tend to agree with The Wire not being too successful in addressing the problem of opening titles for epic series with large cast. And, while The Wire is indeeed one of the best shows of its time, the music, to be charitable, wasn't its forte.

It was actually Lost the first series that established modern minimalistic titles formula. They used single shot with the title "Lost" with after opening credits. Afterwards, they used regular opening titles in background of regular action.

ah yes... LOST intro was absolutely perfect. 3 seconds or less I think it was.
