Hollywood has shown us that films are not the ideal place for learning history. Queen Sirikit of Thailand, however, had a different perspective. Believing that Thailand's history textbooks lacked detail, she persuaded her cousin and renowned Thai filmmaker Chatrichalerm Yukol to create a film addressing an important chapter in the country's history. The outcome was The Legend of Suriyothai, a 2001 historical spectacle that later became one of the most successful films in Thai cinema. This caught the attention of Francis Ford Coppola, who assisted in the film's international distribution.

Set in early 16th Century Siam, the film depicts a country that would eventually evolve into modern-day Thailand, comprising various principalities centred around the powerful city of Ayutthaya. National unity is maintained through a complex web of dynastic alliances. The narrative commences in 1528 when Princess Suriyothai (portrayed by M.L. Pyampas Bhirombhakdi) must forsake her love for childhood friend and distant relative Prince Piren (played by Chatachai Plengpanich) to wed Prince Thien (enacted by Sarunyu Wongkrachang) from a different dynasty. While their marriage is politically motivated, it is a happy one; however, the ensuing two decades prove tumultuous for Siam. The nation faces challenges such as a smallpox epidemic, invasions from neighbouring Burma, dynastic upheavals, and intricate intrigues, particularly when the king's consort Srisudachan (played by Mari Charoenpura) schemes to claim the throne with her lover.

Despite its modest budget compared to contemporary Hollywood blockbusters, The Legend of Suriyothai exudes the grandeur reminiscent of epic films from the 1950s and 1960s. The lack of CGI and major stars is offset by the backing of the Thai government - thousands of soldiers, sailors, and hundreds of elephants feature in spectacular battle sequences. Extensive research over years ensured authenticity in every detail of the film - from costumes and sets to locations. The movie also bravely portrays some grim yet commonplace aspects of history, including beheadings, ritualistic child killings, and unconventional sexual practices. These efforts culminate in a film that outshines its Hollywood counterparts despite some noticeable flaws.

A key issue with the film lies in approximately 40 minutes of original footage being cut from the international version. This results in a rushed plot at times, with characters appearing and vanishing without clear dramatic significance. To aid viewers unfamiliar with Thai history in making connections, producers heavily rely on titles and narration; however, this does not fully address the film's core issue. The protagonist's character remains somewhat one-dimensional until the conclusion to underscore her patriotic stance. Furthermore, the actress portraying Suriyothai appears inexperienced with wooden acting. On a brighter note, other actors excel in their roles, notably Mari Charoenpura who humanizes her villainous character.

While some viewers may find The Legend of Suriyothai lacking in entertainment value, it offers an intriguing insight into a chapter of world history whichi is lesser known in the West. Fulfilling its educational purpose warrants recommending this film for its contribution to historical awareness.

RATING: 6/10 (++)
