Do Revenge || A Thrilling Step Away From Mediocrity

I almost never review teen flicks, especially because I think most of them have been copies of themselves, and there hasn’t been any somewhat different teen film since Mean Girls. But, this brought back memories of the 90’s type movies I saw growing up. I randomly remembered it today, so even though I saw it about three years ago, I decided to do a little review.

Do Revenge (2022)

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, and loosely inspired by Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train, Do Revenge tells the story of Drea (Camila Mendes), a popular student attending Rosehill High School, an elite private school in Miami. Drea soon loses her social and popularity status after the sex tape she sent to her also popular boyfriend, Max, gets leaked. Whether or not he is the one behind the leaking of the video, is yet to be confirmed.

During that year’s summer camp, Drea meets Eleanor (Maya Hawke), a timid tomboy, who is transferring to Resehill that September. After exchanging stories of the wrongs done to them by people: Drea by Max, and Eleanor by Carissa (another Rosehill student), they decide to exact revenge on each other’s enemy. So, Drea plots revenge on Carissa, and Eleanor, Max. However, in a school of diverse twists and turns, someone soon realizes that all is definitely not as they seem.

My Thoughts and Rating

So, my initial attraction to this film is from seeing Camila Mendes as the star cast. Let me get it out there, I have never seen Riverdale, which I guess is where Camila got her spotlight from, but I have seen Palm Springs, which was a truly beautiful film (should review that soon, btw), so I know she’s an amazing actress. And she did deliver as I expected her to.

Like most people who enjoyed this film, you would agree that the attraction to this film is definitely not the storyline because we have seen stories like this with different teen films over the years, but it’s with the telling.

The actual plot of this story distinguishes it from the others, and I love that this film took something that would be otherwise cliché, and gave it a unique voice of its own. It was a pleasant break from the mediocrity Netflix has been serving us by way of teen films for years now, so good for them, honestly.

I can’t say too much about the film to avoid disclosing spoilers, but it’s such an intricately told story, and I genuinely laughed at some parts, which is something, cause I don’t remember the last time I did, with overused jokes and forced lines in films of this genre.

I’d like to give a shout-out once again to the makers for not making this tale as drab as it could have been. The plot twist in the end was twisting. I like to say that I see these things coming, but in this case, I genuinely didn’t, and this gives them a lot of points in my book. For the fact alone that I did not see that plot twist coming.

This is a break from the rather serious films that I like to talk about, but I decided to share this one today, because it was decent enough, and I didn’t feel like I wasted my data or my time seeing it. Q good 7.5/10 movie for me, and I hope that subsequently, equally good or even better teen flicks can be released. Have a lovely week ahead, everyone.

Teenage revenge can be somewhat amusing. I'd like to see what this twist holds.

I bet there would be lots of mischievous activities in this movie since it's about teens. Although, I don't actually get attracted to this kind of movie but some of them I have watched in the past seem good.
