Am I living in the past or too late to the game? Okay, the release of the sequel and the rave of viewers piqued my interest to download the first film to watch. I'm not a fan of Chris Hemsworth but do admire his role as Thor in the Marvel films. Other films like Snow White and the Huntsman, its sequel, 12 Strong, and Spiderhead where he played lead characters were not impressive to me. So when this film was released in 2020, I wasn't keen on watching it.

With the release of a sequel, it means this film was great, the audience wants more of the action and Idris Elba is in it! More reason to watch it. After seeing this almost two hours action-packed and brutal film, I'm annoyed with myself for not watching it in 2020. Well, better late than never, eh?

Extraction (2020) begins with an opening scene of carnage on a bridge. Tyler Rake (played by Chris Hemsworth) raises his gun and shoots some soldiers only to get shot. He hides behind a car, weak and bleeding. The scene changed to a group of high school boys in a club one of whom is Ovi Mahajan jr (played by Rudhraksh Jaiswal), the teenage son of an infamous gangster in prison. Ovi is kidnapped by his father’s rival, Amir.

Ovi’s protector, Saju informs Ovi Snr of his son's kidnap. The imprisoned man threatens Saju's family and asks him to get his son back since he's unable to pay the ransom because his finances are frozen. Tyler Rake, a black ops mercenary with a death wish, is hired to extract Ovi Jr from Amir's territory. This means war. Will Tyler succeed in this dangerous mission and get Ovi Jr home?

Review

The plot of this film is direct and brilliant—hire a black ops mercenary to retrieve a gangster's son kidnapped by a rival gangster. This fast-paced and action-packed action thriller kept me glued to my seat from start to finish. I love the Hollywood and Bollywood collaboration. It's admirable how director Sam Hargrave and screenwriter Joe Russo turned this simple plot into something remarkable, exciting and compelling.

Tyler Rake is a tough and powerful character that everyone would want in their corner. He's fast, good with guns and strong enough to withstand gunshots without losing his aim. What makes him particularly interesting and relatable is that he has a soft side linked to a tragic secret. His mission brings out his paternal instinct which makes him likeable. Chris Hemsworth did great embodying this character. His performance is excellent.

On the other hand, the villain, Amir Asif wasn't too interesting. He's simply a gangster who delights in torturing people and turning young boys into killers. The final scene where he meets the lovely Nik Khan may be my best scene in the film!

One character I find annoying is Saju though he turned out okay towards the end. I disliked how Tyler Rake was double-crossed that led to the brutal massacre.

The storytelling and cinematography are stellar. The gun battles are well choreographed and staged. For the gory parts, this film should be given a thumbs up! The spray of bullets through machine guns, the detonation of bombs leading to broken bones, bullets ripping through flesh and cutting limbs, and bodies flung from buildings are scenes that made me term this film as brutal. Tyler further proves his surname isn't for fancy when he takes out one of Asif's men by pushing his head through a rake! I had to shut my eyes for this scene. Haha.

Overall, this action thriller is worth watching. I very much enjoyed the action and gun battles. My adrenaline was high, just like the cast. I'll give it 4 stars out of 5.

The ending was touching for me. I would have enjoyed this movie 100% if I didn't watch the version without subtitle. I am glad you enjoyed it too. Isn't Saju a lovable character? 😂. Idris Elba awaits you in the second sequel. You will love it. It was nice to read your honesty review about this sequel. Amazing review!

😤 Saju was very annoying! Knowing that his team double-crossed Tyler to get him to do the heavy lifting while he swoops in to take the boy is just wrong.

I assumed the scenes not in Indian were very few so I watched. But as it stretched on, I downloaded subtitles and started all over again! 😤 No point watching if I don't understand what they are saying.

😁 Yay! I'll watch the sequel soon simply because of Idris Elba. Hehe. Thanks a lot for your visit. !PIMP
